It is a great place if you are just passing through or if you just want a place to sleep at night. It can also be your base if you want to explore the surrounding areas (Battlefields, Drakensberg, Midlands, Clarens). This place is clean, safe and comfortable. The food is good.

Unlike most European guests I encountered here, who seemed to stay one night only in their insane quests to see as much of South Africa as possible from the inside of their cars, I stayed 4 nights and it was a very smart choice. Winterton makes an ideal base for accessing most parts of the Drakensberg so I would definitely recommend this B&B for hikers. The staff at Swallow's Nest are very friendly, and the breakfasts are good. One real bonus here is that, if you want, you can have a home-cooked dinner in the evening at any time to suit you. The food is typically South African and is utterly delicious and way better than what you can get in the local pub (not that the pub food is poor). If you've been out on a strenuous hike and can't be bothered to move yourself after your shower, this is really convenient.

Very friendly service from arrival to departure. Lovely location; nice and quiet. It started raining Sunday late afternoon and Poppet brought us sherry and umbrellas. Nice attention to her guests! Thank you, Poppet; will recommend your establishment.

Swallows was comfortable, quiet and clean. The only real problem we had was the lack of hanging cupboards. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great. The staff were very helpful too. Unfortunately the TV remote wouldn't switch off with the remote and glowed in ghostly white until on reached up and pushed the button on the set itself. Not a big problem though. We would stay there again but would specify hanging cupboards.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Convient location. The bedroom walls were very thin and we were woken by our neighbors talking. No notice in the shower to say the tap was the wrong way around and I therefore ran the cold water waiting for it to get hot! When water is a scarce resource, this is an issue!! Other than the shower the room was clean and comfortable.

Efficient, friendly service. Will definitely be staying here again, on our next canoeing trip to Winterton. Divine comfy beds with electric blankets. Delicious breakfast. Overall perfect location, close to everything.

A warm and friendly B&B with lovely staff that will go above  and beyond to help you in any way they can. They also take meal requests and do washing onsite (which may be included in the rate, just check).

Located in Winterton  about 30 mins from most major hikes, with all the major tourist spots on the road along the way to these hikes

Bottom line:
-Good food (breakfast included and other meals can be too for a price)
-Location close enough to tourist spots
-Fantastic staff
-Nice cheap rate particularly  with all that they offer

Recommend!

Swallows Nest is situated on the edges of Winterton town and is a beautiful tranquil spot great for some peace and quiet. The owners are warm and friendly and the resident house cat provides a sense of home.

Great location for access to Royal Natal National Park, Cathedral Peak and Champagne Valley.
Plenty of bars and restaurants in the town plus Spar and other mini-markets.
Bargain car wash!
Easy to find on main road into town.
