We stayed for 2 nights at Drakensberg Bush Lodge and Backpackers to explore the route along the R600 into the Drakensberg. It is situated just outside Winterton and the gravel road leading to the farm is in a good condition (as on 15-17 January 2025) for all kinds of vehicles.
We occupied one of the 2 attached duet-like chalets which was further away from the backpackers accommodation. The location is in a quiet section of the premises and ideal for 2 couples traveling together, but wanting to stay privately in their own apartments with their own facilities.
Although the accommodation is very rustic, the kitchen is equipped with everything you might need to prepare a meal - fridge, microwave, small 2-plate stove with small oven combination, kettle, toaster, utensils and cutlery.
We noted a few points for improvement and brought it under the attention of Wayne, who understood and reacted positively to our suggestions to improve staying over for future potential guests.
Good value for money if your intention is to basically only sleep there and explore all the places around.

We wanted to book a very close place for when we go on a hot air balloon the following day at 4H40 and we stayed here my word, we were there for one day and we wished for more, the place is so cosy and you are surrounded by nature, it is clean, quiet and safe. The perfect place to get away from the city life and stress. The host wow amazing friendly people so welcoming, we had a great experience😁

I stayed at Drakensberg Backpackers with four friends who were running the Drakensberg Northern Traverse from Sentinel Car Park to Cathedral Peak Hotel. The backpackers is perfectly positioned for this run. It was a wet weekend, so having the ample veranda around all the rooms was perfect. We made a nice butter chicken curry in the kitchen and were warm and asleep in no time at all.
I appreciate the warm gas showers, but I do have one friend who has a heavy hand and he does struggle to get the balance right.
It is worth noting that the backpackers is at the end of a km long dirt road that can get quite slippery in the rain when wet.
I've stayed here a number of times, which shows how I like the place.
Thank you

The Drakensberg Bush Lodge and Backpackers is the perfect location for a family getaway. As a family of eight traveling can be very tricky because accommodation is often a problem, but Emile and his family made us feel safe, relaxed and completely at home. This little gem is fully equipped and beautifully maintained - a real home away from home. We will definitely be returning to this amazing spot again. We would highly recommend a stay here.

The Farm Cottage suited us perfectly. It was roomy, the bed was comfortable, there was a television, it was cosy with a wall heater and another heater to cater for the very cold spell. The kitchen was well equipped and hot water was readily available. The shower was cubicle was big and the water hot. Altogether the amenities were good.
There was an outside braai area with two braais, chairs and table under a canopy. I felt the area around the braai needed a bit of a weeding.
The cottage veranda looked out on to a dam and we enjoyed watching the geese and birds.
When we booked our balloon trip, no mention was made of accommodation on the property and it was merely by chance that I asked if the ballooning company offered any accommodation.

Had a great time. A beautiful place, magnificent sunset views. Very peaceful, convenient location when you want to visit the Drakensberg and Spioenkop Nature Reserve is at the doorstep. Good value for money. Will definitely visit again.

The owners were very helpful and it was such a lovely peaceful place to stay. The cottage had everything we needed to make ourselves comfortable. We also enjoy the walks around the property and of course the hot air ballooning was amazing!

We really appreciated our stay at Drakensberg Bush Lodge & Backpackers. It was the ideal way to rewind and relax. Exactly what most of us need nowadays! The room was comfortable and clean. We loved the walks on the farm to enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. There are abundant bird life to watch and photograph. We felt safe , it was a very enjoyable weekend. We would like to go back for a visit soon.

We really enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse, and I must say it was our very 1st experience at a real farmhouse, which was very neat and spacious. Our hosts were very friendly and made our stay very pleasant.
I cannot express our HOT AIR BALLOON ride, most definitely it was our highlight and bucket list tick.
We enjoyed every moment, our pilot gets a 10/10, perfectly, awesome fly and experience. Love every moment of our stay and ride. Will most definitely recommend our experience to family and friends.
