Nestled amidst breathtaking scenery, Cathedral Peak Hotel emerges as a sanctuary with its uncommercialized allure and tranquil setting. The hotel's heartwarming atmosphere and immaculate rooms with captivating views earn rave reviews, while the friendly, professional staff enhances the guest experience, despite occasional lapses. While some find the hotel's pricing steep, the extensive amenities, from diverse dining choices to varied activities, are often seen as providing good value. However, the charm of its location may be marred by a hint of complacency and the rooms, although clean, could benefit from modernization.

Balance of probabilities would suggest that if you return to a place often enough you will, at some point, be dissapointed or have a bad experience. Well, Cathederal Peak defies that logic and every visit in the past 30 years has left me wishing for "just one more day"

It is my sincere hope that this hotel does not end up in the clutches of some souless corporate chain but rather retains it's deep seated heritage and values, its unique character and personality and the operating philosophy that treats every guest as the most important guest.

The location is spectacular, the staff, from Ayanda in the front to Jerome in the kitchen are, to a man/woman helpful and genuinely pleased to welcome you, whilst the food can only be described as an overindulgence that cannot be sustained.

Cathederal Peak simply has to be the best value for meney anywhere in the country and I am already looking forward to my next vist. Many thanks

We are a family of four, and when booking our four night stay months ahead of arrival had asked for a family room or at least double rooms with interleading door. Upon check-in we're given two separate rooms at absolutely opposite ends of the premises. How did that happen? Receptionists were unable to sort out the situation. Eventually some sort of supervisor assisted, and managed to at least give us two rooms in the same wing (still not near each other though) after some shuffling around in the booking system. Not a good start.

But things improved rapidly. As mentioned over and over again, the environs have an almost otherworldly beauty. We were generally very impressed by the range of activities offered and the delicious buffets served three times a day. Grounds are very well kept, lots of effort go into maintenance. The rooms are OK but you can tell it's been a while since they were first built.

We want to raise the question about only doing buffets in Corona times? When the virus is raging like wildfire and people from all over SA and the region come together at this hotel, is it wise to have them lining up at a number of food stations for every meal? Perhaps it would be better to have a la carte menus and waiting at the tables? I'm sure this issue has been raised and arguments pro and con have been considered, and hopefully the right decision was made.

We have just returned from the Cathedral Peak Hotel where we celebrated our Wedding Anniversary. With strict Covid protocols in place, we felt safe and reassured at all times. A few facilities were closed (ie. some games and the Spa were closed but totally understandable during this Covid pandemic)

We stayed in Standard Room 316 - at the end of the corridor, which had a large side window overlooking the bowls green and mountains. The room was spacious, comfortable, with a lovely (firm) king size bed, a little patio overlooking the pretty gardens towards the pool area.

Special mention must be made of meal times - the food was delicious, perfectly prepared and presented, a wide variety to suit all tastes, I am sure my husband and I have put on weight as we could not resist tasting the various dishes...!!

We enjoyed a few walking trails (enough to feel that we have worked off that delicious breakfast) before heading to the pool area sunbeds to chill for the rest of the day in the mountains...

We made use of the "Special Offer" during November, which made this long weekend away superb value for money. We loved it - THANK YOU!

We have just come back from another holiday at Cathedral Peak Hotel, after many wonderful holidays spent there over the past 25 years. Unfortunately this time not being of the same standard that we have been accustomed to. From the reception staff upon arrival who were not friendly or helpful besides Ayanda, the rooms are in dire need of some serious upgrades, the shower over the bath is very outdated, the dining room also looking tired and in need of a revamp. The WiFi was very poor to non existent, dropping all the time in the main hotel to not being able to connect in the room at all, very frustrating, especially when one still has work commitments. The new generation of owners have a lot to learn from their parents and grandparents about the hospitality business, the main one being how to make your guests feel welcome with a friendly approach. They were so busy accommodating their big group of friends and family over the new year, that the paying guests were overlooked. My daughter in law and daughter were given questionable disapproving looks from the wife of the owner on a few occasions, in the dining room as well as at the pool area, which I found very unprofessional, surely a smile would do, like previous generations, they do after all rely on the paying guests to make their establishment successful. The table tennis table outside the kids dining room was hogged every day by the owners friends and family!! Like I say they obviously have a lot to learn re the hospitality business. The checking out process was extremely difficult with the credit card machine having no signal, the gentleman insisting on swiping the card again, saying the transaction had not gone through, needless to say the transaction went through twice on my side and I am still waiting for it to reverse.
On the plus side I have to commend the housekeeping staff, always with a smile on their faces as well as the kitchen staff, working tirelessly preparing the food, our waiter Wiseman with his funny jokes as well as chef Dylan who made the best omelets!

Last weekend before lockdown our family took a much-needed getaway and there is no better place in KZN than this gem Cathedral Peak Hotel. Their specials are amazing and value for money the best as far as I am concerned. The current special is R1355 pp sharing or single and kids under 12 @ R495 now for this amount you get lovely accommodation, so many different types, you get the most amazing breakfasts whatever you can eat from kippers to full English and continental, tea coffee and cake twice a day, delicious lunch and the most amazing dinners full buffets, trout, stir fry, roasts, soup, and decadent desserts, so even having dropped their rates they have NOT compromised on the quality and quantity of food nor service levels and there is always a Van der Riet family member around, This hotel is steeped in history and is now 82 years old and still run by the passionate Van der Riet family. So why ???go self-catering when you get all of the above plus so many activities, we were there for two short days and wished we had stayed longer as the hikes are amazing you don't have to drive to hike there are so many trails on your doorstep, you also have a 9 hole golf course, there is putt putt , great kids playgrounds, tennis, stunning pool, fully equiped gym and SPA on site, plus great mountain biking trails , horse riding, quad bikes and heli flips. This place has the wow factor for me and I will certainly go again in spring! PLUS their COVID protocols are amazing we all felt super safe, highly recommended

If you love adventure, Cathedral Peak Hotel in the Drakensberg is a spot you want to visit in summer or winter!

I had no idea what to expect at Cathedral Peak and I did not bother reading reviews about the area or hotel as I wanted to be surprised and boy, I was! The view from this hotel is breathtaking – I am a little jealous that the staff gets to wake up to such a picture-perfect view every morning.

Cathedral Peak is a hotel you visit if you want to get away from the chaos in the city, do something outside your comfort zone, reflect or looking for an opportunity to reconnect with nature.

I must commend the hotel on having rules and regulations in place regarding Covid-19 to make guests feel welcomed and comfortable. This is the first hotel I have been to since Covid that I have noticed has a sanitising station in every single room.

Before we even arrived at the hotel, we received an email with a pdf document which shared all the protocols in place for Covid-19 that helped calm me down a little.

Last week we had the most amazing holiday in the Cathedral Peak Hotel. We enjoy hiking and, perhaps being a little older, have passed the stage where we want to 'rough it' so whilst enjoying magnificent hikes from the hotel in what has to be the most beautiful place in the world it was bliss to return to our clean and warm room. The wonderful meals in the dining room where we were always greeted by warm and friendly staff were the total 'cherry on top'. We can't wait to return.

Cathedral Peak was a winner for our 10th anniversary getaway.

We are a couple in our 30s from Pretoria. We seldom get away so this was special. We left the kids with Ouma for 3 nights in the berg and instead of an over-night hike and sleeping in tents and caves as we usually do we splashed out for Cathedral Peak Hotel. We had stopped in and even stayed over once before on business so we know Cathedral Peak Hotel is a gem.

We relished every minute, talking endlessly, relaxing by the pool, exploring slowly, savouring meals and tea, and enjoying the facilities. The standard room was simple but great...we enjoyed the quaint, old-school feel.

We looked at the maps and hikes and enjoyed morning walks up past Ribbon Falls to stroll along the little berg and back via Mushroom, up uMlambonja to Marble Baths (bit tricky near the end) and explored the Albert and Doreen falls valley (again tricky near the end). We enjoyed early morning runs on the enjoyable 5km trail, admired the approx 100 resident Eland, and were back for lunch and reading away the afternoons

Every meal is a feast, with a classic buffet of traditional Western/English fare, including roasts with Yorkshire puddings, fresh trout, stir fry, sides, veggies, salad and baked and cold tarts, cakes and ice cream. Th food is wholesome, generous, rich, prepared fresh on site, with no instant desserts or store-bought muffins. Full English/continental breakfasts with bowls of fruit and delicious fresh croissants. Plenty of decent coffee on tap.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Cathedral Peak Hotel for a Monday to Friday getaway. The staff were fantastic and very welcoming. The food was delicious, and plentiful and varied and we loved having three meals a day ( never got to the morning tea and afternoon tea!).
The Wine List is short but carefully curated to include good value wines and a few connoisseur wines. The Ladies bar could possibly stock a few more Single Malt whiskies, but that did not detract from the overall great Pre-dinner and Post Dinner experiences we had at the Ladies. The activities are plentiful and the hotel reminded me in many ways of a cuirse liner - where all the guests start chatting to each other and making friends . Covid protocols were in place and masks were required to be worn during dishing at the buffet table.

We have spent a number of Christmas holidays here and have never been disappointed. It is without question the best location for a hotel in the Drakensberg mountains with the magnificent view of Cathedral Peak and the Bell ever present.
It has been commented on many times the excellent buffet food and this is no exaggeration. Guided hikes take you to some lovely places in the valleys where you can find a mountain pool in which to cool off.
They have two lovely tennis courts which are under utilised because the management don't do anything to bring the tennis guests together. So easy to organise every day with a notice on the board and the guests can put their names on with a brief description of their level (Beginner-Intermediate + or Intermediate ++ or Advanced. The Christmas Church service needs to be improved.
The nine hole golf course is a challenge and fun to play. They need to replace their old golf carts as they don't have enough power to climb some of the hills!
Its been a little piece of heaven for us for many years and we will visit again next Christmas. Thank you to all the staff and wishing you well for 2020
