Booked for 3 days with our in-laws. Although it is nice and restful, and all that you need, the price is a bit high for what you get. The price we paid was not R200pp as mentioned in a previous review, we paid a fair bit more than that. We have dogs and my in-laws as well, but getting stormed by 4 or more dogs when stopping at your cottage is a bit much.
The cottage we stayed in needs a bit of an upgrade. As mentioned in a previous review, the web photo's are a bit misleading. One would also feel more welcome if Skarlien would say hi and ask if all is ok as she handled the bookings, but we never met her. As they are fairly new owners I would like them to use the feedback to improve and not see it negatively. We wish them well for the future.

The view of the mountain is blocked by trees, which was so disappointing, as I was hosting someone who had not been to the berg! We stayed in the Francolin cottage. parking and security good.
The place is clean, bedrooms have nice beds, and for self catering it is good value..if you do not need the view!
The host is friendly and on call.

We stayed at Acorn Cottages in August 2014. There were 6 of us, my family and another couple with their son. We stayed in the self catering cottages. These were basic but comfortable. The property is very quiet and nicely maintained. Herman was very helpful and accommodating. Acorn Cottages is central to most of the attraction in the Drakensburg. We enjoyed our weekend.

My family of 9 booked nto 3 Acorn cottages for the New Year.
We had 3 cottages for 6 adults and 3 children.
On arrival we were told by a very friendly housekeeper that the owner was away on her own holiday. We had no problems with this if the owner made sure that the cottages were ready to receive visitors. Reading all the reviews maintenance is clearly not done in the cottages and the owners obviously don't go into each cottage to make sure everything that is advertised on the websites are as they are.

On arrival we found out that one of the cottages Francolin had no hot water and we were told that the Francolin cottage always has a problem with the geyser. We were told someone would be coming to fix it.
Later that night someone came to fix it but could not get it going.
3 children, raining and lots of mud later we could not have a bath nor a shower. The family in Francolin cottage had to keep running between cottages to bath and this really was annoying as we came to relax together as a family. I shudder at the thought if strangers were next door and they could not share ablutions.

We could not wash dishes and had to boil the kettle constantly.

After various attempts 3 days later the geyser still not fixed.

We were very disappointed in the attitude of the owner who was away on her own holiday and left someone who was unable to fix the geyser but was very helpful.

We paid a fair amount of money for this breakaway and felt the neglect of maintenance was a huge problem eg constantly running toilet, Kingfisher cottage had mould in the shower and you could only secure door if the bottom latch was secured as top latch was broken. The Francolin cottage, fridge had mould in and the blinds in Kingfisher cottage needed attention. The door in the Swallow cottage kept getting stuck. One previous review complained about the area by the boma which looks like a building site. This is still like that.

The Acorn Cottages were highly recommended to us and this lack of maintenance on the property put a damper on our well deserved break.

The owner actually said if we want to leave she would reimburse us. We still had one night to go and we all know how fully booked Christmas and the New Year is. We found her very defensive and as if we were disturbing her.

When we booked this place there was nothing mentioned about the amount of dogs thecowner has, 9 dogs and 4 cats that cone barking evrytime you go outside.
The owner was also not very friendly. Always talking about the crime and how unsafe SA is.

The farm house wasnt very clean, lots of spider webs, also the matress of the double bed is worn and not comfortable. Definetly a negative impact on champagne valley. There are much friendlier people in the champagne valley than this owner.

When confronted, she says this is how it is, the new south africa. Instead of staying here and having a bad experience we changed to somewhere else where we were received warmly.

We asked to see the owner of accorn cottages but she repliesmd she is out of office while still being at the house. Waiting. An hour she came eventualy but was very unpleasant.

From my point of view definitely not worth it, hospitality is not great and accomodation is even worse. Fotos are not accurate of how the Barn owl cottage looks like, so dont be deceived.

Very disappointed with our stay here for the weekend in Barn Owl cottage. There was an extremely bad smell in the kitchen area, presumably a dead mouse trapped between the zinc cladding and internal wall. When we complained to the owner gave us the option of moving to the garden suite but that was so damp and musty we decided to stick it out for the second night as we were leaving very early the next day. While I understand that the dead creature was in some way out of the owner's hands, I do feel he should have offered us at least a partial refund for the inconvenience, but he was disinterested.

For the price we are paying (R840 for two people per night), this place is disappointing. There are so many spiders and bugs around (found a spider on my bed), even those menacing-looking, orange - and - black ones with stingers...The bed is of low quality (backpackers beds are way more comfy) and the place is narrow and small. We stayed at the guinea fowl room.
The only plus point is its optimal location to access walks to monk's cowl.

This is the third time that we stayed at Acorn Cottages and yet again we had such a magnificent time. You are part of the Liebenberg family when you stay in the Cottages. The stunning boma and dining area overlooking the valley is equipped with everything that the traveler requires. The dogs greeting each guest is special and the best part of the stay is Ben (the Rottweiler) sitting at your feet with the fire crackling away. Deon and Skarlien, you have blessed us with another stunning memory. We will be back.

Thank you so so much Skarlien and Deon for an amazing stay! The cottages, the farm, you guys.... It was the first time we joined our husbands for a hunting trip and was not sure what to expect. We immediately became part of the family and spent beautiful times together
