Very friendly staff, nice hotel, good swimming (but watch out for water quality, it can change!). Tasty food, but the hotel kitchen hardly knows vegetables. Breakfast very simple, one type of cheese all week, vegetables for breakfast only on extra order. Salads are not on the lunch or dinner menu. Meals can therefore be heavy on the stomach. The price-service ratio could be better!

A perfect hotel in every way. A 10*** place without question. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful break at Hotel Stella d'Italia. The staff and warm and friendly, but highly competent and attentive. The food superb and the views breathtaking. My wife was so overwhelmed by the beauty of the view when we entered our room, that she began to cry! Thank you so much, David & Julie

Considering this is the only lakeside restaurant in the tiny, tranquil, village of San Mamete, it is disappointing that the waiting staff (apart from one young man) are extremely rude and unwelcoming, particularly to non resident guests. This is unlike all the other cafes and bars in the area which we found to be very friendly and charming This is such a shame, as the setting is beautiful, with stunning views across the lake. The poor attitude of the staff and the fact that it was all rather pretentious, put us off returning. We had planned to spend our last evening there but instead opted for somewhere that appreciated our custom and helped make our evening special. The staff on the hotel reception, by contrast were very friendly and helpful.

The location of this hotel is superb: right next to the lake, in the middle of a very charming and quiet little village with one shop, two bars and a little market stand on Saturdays. The hotel is nicely decorated in a British-Italian style. While I would not necessarily want to live with this decoration all year long, I liked it for a short hotel stay. Check-in was easy. We had a very nice room, quite spacious (we were with a kid), with a terrace from which you were more or less "on the lake". Only the restaurant was in between our terrace and the lake. Beds were very comfortable, the room and bathroom very clean. I also thought that the price was very fair - not cheap but fair. As the weather was not very nice, we had to eat inside. Food was very good and service was nearly "old style" with waiters who you could see really knew the business and a chef de service who normally works in a five star hotel restaurant. You could feel it and I personally enjoyed the experience. However, I found the prices for the restaurant for this area on the expensive side. I would go there again but not too regularly. All in all, if you are looking for a hotel located at the lake and in the middle of a charming Italian village and don't want to spend a fortune but still have a nice room with a view - this is the place to go!

We spent two nights at the lovely hotel, as we were hiking in the Lugano and Como area. The hotel terrace is stunning, though we were there on overcast and raining days. The view from our lakefront room, with balcony, was beautiful. The staff were accommodating and professional, as well as hardworking. The hotel was perfect for our needs, ending our hiking trip in San Mamete and Lake Lugano.

As we life in southern part of Switzerland we used to come quite often on a weekend for dinner before the pandemic. The lake side restaurant is a dream for every one that is looking for a dinner experience before the time of mass tourism. Professional waiters dressed in black, real silver ware, great food. BUT: It seems that the hotel does not like outside guest any more. The terrace is separated in to an area for hotel guest and one for non hotel guest. Twice we arrived without reservation around 8:00 pm. We have been told no tables are available. So we took a drink in the gazebo between the two areas. Half of the tables for hotel guest were empty, while the non hotel terrace had only half of the capacity a was full. When at 8:30 pm we asked to get one of the tables for hotel guest, the chief waiter rudely told us that we should make a reservation upfront and should not pitch up. Happened twice. He possibly could have offered us something informal to eat in the gazebo. Instead he left us hungry We did understand the message. Given the prices increase of almost 40% compared to pre covid we are spending our money on swiss side of the Lago Lugano.

We stayed just one night booking the day befor. Top is the location, price quality ratio is good, staff is friendly and the place has some sort of charm. Yes it is old (but I expected older from my rapid check) and a bit of more maintenance might be needed but really we liked it and would go back. A good choice !

Safety and security is always at the forefront of my mind when I travel alone. This experience was a complete violation of the guest and hotel agreement. This is the most disappointing review I have ever written, based on the most disturbing experience at a hotel. I stayed here two nights June 4 and June 5. About 12:30 a.m. on June 5 I heard my door unlock and a man entered my room. I was sleeping and awoke upon his entrance. I screamed as he proceeded to make his way into the room. I don't know if he was going to rob me or rape me. I screamed that he get the hell out of the room, and he did. I called the front desk and no one answered. I was afraid to leave the same room - he just used a key to enter. I put a sweater on to report what happened to the night manager. I ran down the stairs to the front desk and to my shock the man who just entered and exited my room was the night manager. He was shouting so sorry and that he was "lucida" which I did not know what that meant - not sure that translates. I was beside myself that the person who is on duty is also entering guest's rooms in the middle of the night! I did not fall back to sleep. I spoke with day time manager and was dismissed. He said, "Sorry that that happened, I'll have to speak to my employee to see if it is true." That was it. No, follow up. Instead of leaving later that afternoon, I left that morning. This decision disrupted my travel itinerary for the day. For the rest of the week of my vacation, I didn't sleep more than a couple of hours a night. As I left the hotel that morning, the night manager stood and stared at me from a flat directly across the hotel. It was beyond disturbing. This experience was disappointing on a number of levels, including the dismissive nature of the daytime manager. I received his reaction to equate to "this was not an isolated event". Second, this was disappointing because the setting, the location, the staff (with the exception of the night and day manager) were lovely. The restaurant was wonderful, and the spa, was simple but wonderful as well. It is not easy to get to and I considered coming back with friends. All of that is history. I followed up with American Express because I booked the hotel through its Travel site. Amex said it has no recourse and suggested I return to the hotel for a response (after a non-response) and to leave a review. After 32 years as an Amex cardholder, I believe I will be ending that relationship since it is the conduit through which I found the hotel. I did use the reviews here to decide to book the hotel. If you value safety, if you want to be respected as a woman, and care to sleep soundly on vacation you should not stay here.

Response from Franco Ortelli, Direttore generale at Hotel Stella d'Italia
Responded 01 Jul 2022
Dear guest, we are sorry to read of your experience in our hotel and we normally do not answer to all reports but this deserves a reply. First of all, when you reported the fact, we apologized for what had happened and told you that we did not had an answer until we had spoken to the night porter. The smoke detector in your room had sent an alarm message and the night porter went to check if a fire was really on or if it was a false alarm. He stupidly forgot to check if the room was occupied or not. When he realized that the room was occupied and there was no presence of smoke, he immediately left. The night porter was at the window in front of the hotel because he lives there with his family. Safety and security is kept highly in mind on our premises and we can assure you that since its opening in 1910 nobody has never been robbed or raped and all guests (especially women) have our full respect.

We had a great stay at Stella d’Italia. The location of the hotel is fantastic: right on the lake. It must be said the hotel is (very) worn down; I’m sure 40-50 years ago it was a nice place, but now it really requires an update. The food is good, however the service at the restaurant is terrible. This is mainly caused by the very unfriendly head waiter. He is not welcoming at all. He seemed to get angry at everything we asked him. We had the experience both at dinner and breakfast. His attitude seems to spread to the rest of the team: they seemed nice, but apparently have been taught to provide angry/unfriendly service. We will gladly come back after the head waiter is replaced….!
