We spent a family weekend in Gorky’s Cottage at Riverview Country Inn, Swinburne, from 20 – 22 March 2021. On arrival, our cottage was clean and well set up, with surprises including DSTV and a washing machine! We truly had such a wonderful experience at Riverview. Steve & Jenny, and Terry & Meglan were so friendly and helpful, and literally right there when we needed them. All their staff were super helpful. The management team certainly go out of their way to ensure their guests are happy and comfortable. We strolled down to Hound & Hare for a Sunday lunch, which was absolutely delicious and so well priced, and bought some lovely preserves and sauces. Riverview Country Inn really is the perfect little getaway or stopover, conveniently located just off the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban. Gorgeous Nguni cattle grazing in the plains, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, Riverview is perched on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment, with the Rensburgkop Mountain looming over this quaint little gem in the Free State. Just a stone’s throw from Montrose Shell Ultra City, with a Mugg & Bean, Fishaways, Debonairs, KFC & Milky Lane, amongst others. Overall, we had a great experience and look forward to making this a new family weekend tradition! Thank you Steve & Jenny, Terry & Meglan ♥ We will certainly see you again!

A little gem tucked away just off the N3, situated right next to Montrose Service Plaza, at the foot of the Van Rheenens Pass. A cozy pub with friendly welcoming faces, great food and best of all, pet friendly! Pets required to be on a leash when entering the Pub area.

A lovely fireplace in our room to chase away the winter cold. Beds were clean and comfortable.

Will definitely be back. Just a few tips...... Some rooms may not be wheelchair friendly. We had a lot of difficulty getting warm water the next morning. Specially in winter a warm bath will be awesome. Our room didn’t have a shower though, to us, that wasn’t a problem. We had to bring some of the outside firewood inside to dry as it was raining / drizzling outside, to keep the fire going.

Extra blankets were available in the rooms and they offer additional blankets and firewood, that can be arranged with the friendly ladies at the pub.

We will be back for sure! The few hiccups we encountered, can be addressed, just didn’t have time the following morning as we had to leave quite early.

Owners are really accommodating and friendly, we arrived a bit early, but as the room was not occupied the night before, we were allowed to check in, which we were so grateful for! Oh and don’t forget, the Inn is pet friendly. Please keep the grounds and rooms poop free and clean as they do and clean up after your pet. It will hopefully encourage more places to allow pets to travel with their human families!

Thank you for a delightful stay!

Thank you so much for the really lovely and informative comments. Just one note we are over the top of Van Reenen's Pass, so as not to confuse other guests. So sorry about the bath water, something went wrong.

A wonderful trip down memory lane to a time when travel was an adventure and guests where welcome with broad smiles and wonderful hospitality.
A charming establishment that, notwithstanding the "throwaway" and instant gratification culture of todays world, somehow manages to cling to its heritage and character and still deliver on the basic premise of comfort, cleanliness and a good night's sleep
Food at the Hound and Hare was great and the menu caters for most demands and tastes.
The room was more than adequate with beautifully maintained Oregon Pine floors, whilst the bathroom has been recently renovated.
The only small gripe is the single plug point in the room with an inadequate adaptor/multiplug.
Difficult to boil the kettle, charge the phone and work off the laptop.
Great value for money and the perfect stopover between Durban and Jhb.
Will return.

Hosts were so hospitable and welcoming, food delicious and our child had fun in the pool and with the resorts dogs and cats. Just a step back in time and interesting from a historical perspective. Was such a good stopover between Durban and Jhb.

I was coming back from hiking in Royal Natal National Park after rainy day and needed a place I could recover. Riverview Country Inn is approximately 15 km away from Harrismith along N1 highway. The room was very clean and bed really comfortable, with duvet one can only dream about. Within the complex there is also a restaurant with decent selection of reasonably priced meals. Highly recommended.

On arrival, we were directed to a very small room with a shower & toilet with no tv and the double bed was pushed up against the wall on one side, so one of us would have to climb onto the bed from the other side. I think this room is aimed at single guests and not a couple. We then requested a room with a bath and tv as we thought we had booked from the pictures on the site and were given a small unit with more room, beds, a small kitchen, fridge, fireplace and a bed upstairs which had a bath in the bathroom for which we had to pay a more. We found this to be rather rustic. The bed was comfy and the linen was clean, but don't think anyone had stayed in the room for a while because there were some spiders and insects stuck on the curtains. Loadshedding is always a problem as you have to wait a couple of hours for the water to warm up for a bath. A bit disappointing for what we paid.

We were eight people staying for one night in the Eagles Rest cottage. The cottage has everything you need and is good value for money, but don't expect a modern stylish cottage. The loft area is open plan and cold in the winter.
The restaurant on the property is highly recommended with a cosy atmosphere and good food!

I wrote a more thorough Google review. My biggest issues were delays in the room being ready, the rooms being vary bare in terms of what's offered, the staff not wearing masks, and the rooms being close to a road that truckers use with no fence in between.

On the upside, there was a nice view, it was affordable and I slept very comfortably and warm, probably the best of my entire trip.
