We stayed here for one night during our recent tour of Namibia. Our original plan was to Camp here, however, due to the Campground being flooded we were given a Free upgrade to a lodge. Of all the accommodation we stayed in this was by far the nicest. We were advised that the road to the lodge wasn’t passable so we were directed to a small Jetty not to far from the town of Rundu. We left our vehicle in a secure compound and were ferried to the lodge along the picturesque Covango River. After checking in we were shown to our lodge which was set close to the river in immaculately maintained grounds. The lodge was beautifully appointed consisting of a large double bed with canopy, a vanity sink washing area and shower room, and was by far the nicest Lodge accommodation we had stayed in throughout the whole trip. Free water, Coffee & Tea was available in the room. Fresh Coffee was delivered to the room in the morning. We took our meals in the beautiful riverside restaurant which were on a buffet style, plenty of choice for every taste, the desserts were particularly delicious. Free WiFi was available in the restaurant area. Beautiful setting, lovely accommodation and delicious food. Very friendly and attentive staff. Highly Recommended.

We took a family camping trip to Kavango and Zambezi and Hakusembe was our first (2 nights) and last (1 night) stop. The camping spots are spacious, well maintained and luscious, situated at the banks of the Kavango. It's a doable short walk to the main lodge. The river was low but it is still is a well-situated lodge with beautiful grounds. The pool is nice and clean. Staff is friendly. Bernard our riverguide was knowledgeable and the drinks and snacks on the cruise were good. Dinner is a set menu (perhaps because of few guests or Corona). It's pretty pricey and with kids it's better to have them order from the lunch menu as they don't care much for the 4 course meal. Other than that the dinner (oryx steak) was sublime. This Gondwana does not have camping to go, but has nice rooms overlooking the Kavango including family villas which will be something to try out for next time. The access road is navigable with a normal car but after the rains we were happy to do have a bigger suv although there was no need to engage the 4x4.

HAKUSEMBE RIVER LODGE
is a quiet shady place on the Okavango River. It’s 16km west of Rundu. We were met by a very cheerful receptionist who explained in detail everything a guest needs to know about the lodge. We felt very welcomed. Our room had three beds in it, which is great for space. If one is only looking for a two-bedded bungalow, ask for that as it is on the grass with a better more open view of the river, I think. Our rooms were spacious and had a little balcony. All rooms are very clean and neat. We could sit together on the grass between our bungalows which had benches overlooking the river. Meals are a set 'a la carte' menu (all priced the same). Hakusembe doesn’t seem to really cater for vegetarians. One needs to negotiate. The carnivores had a good meal. They offer an evening riverboat cruise (separate payment) with a guide. We didn't do that. There is a campsite set slightly away from the bungalows and a curio shop at the entrance to the lodge. Checking in and out was very efficient. We spent one night there.

The lodge is in a remote part of Rundu. The bungalows were clean and very nice. I enjoyed my 2 night stay at the lodge. It`s quiet and peaceful. There were a couple of issues that marred my experience.

First was the internet fee. Since cellular reception is poor, you have to rely on WiFi. I have no problems with purchasing internet. You have to get the codes from the reception. The issue is that I got one code where a 1 GB purchase only lasted for a single 30 minute streaming show. I got a second code the next day that had already been used up. My impression is that they were either reselling partially used codes.

The second issue was related to modifying my reservation. As I mentioned, the lodge was in a remote area or Rundu which was far from the city center. I was there on business and could not commute 35 minutes one way to work especially once some of the roads were washed out because of rain. So I asked to shorten my reservation by one day. I asked the receptionist if that would be a problem. She said no problem, that she would contact the main office to issue a refund. I asked if I could use the credit from the cancelled night to pay for my meals and other incidentals which would have been about even. She said no. Ultimately, she did not contact the main office. I called the main office several times and emailed several times. The main office has refused to give me a refund for the cancelled night. If the receptionist had been honest with me,I would have just stayed for the whole reservation.

Final conclusion, this is a fine place to stay but communication is poor with the main office, it is far from the city center, and there were issues with the internet codes.

My overall experience met my expectations of a high end lodge.

WiFi is an issue for businesspeople - I bought a N$200 because no N$100 which hardly lasted.

Menu options are in abundance and delicious - chef knows his guests need good, hearty meals.

Hakusembe really has something for everybod, from a luxurious suite and different standard chalets to luxury campsites.
The main area has beautiful views across the vast Kwando floodplains. The lodge is ideally situated to visit National parks like Mudumo, Babwata Nambwa Core, Nkasa Rupara etc. Boat excursions on the Kwando and game drives to Nambwa Core are offered at the lodge, as well as fishing excursions.
Meals are all served on the beautiful deck. There are various areas to relax and a great shop too. The bar is well stocked, and drinks not expensive at all.
The large campsites each have its own ablution and are extremely private.
Highly recommended !

This Lodge is a Romantic Getaway, awesome views from the rooms looking out on the Okavango River and beautiful for bird viewing. The Rooms are very private and neat, except there were holes in the dark curtains that block out the sunlight.
The Dinner was not outstanding, the food was not tasty and nothing impressive for the amount you pay for Dinner. Breakfast was better and a good variety. Would love to visit again!

Our stay was excellent with outstanding services from the owners and workers. They took time out to attend to questions or the needs a guest may have. It has a great location right next to the Zambezi river with a breathtaking view of the river and the neighboring country Zambia on the other side of the river. I highly recommend this lodge.

My fiancé and I visited the lodge 15-18 December 2021 (Namibian Citizens).

Our highlights and compliments:
◆ The lodge is truly beautiful to the eye: it's green as far as the eye can see, very well taken care of, one can see lots of thought has gone into every aspect of the lodge.
◆ Friendliest staff we have ever come into contact with during our trip in Northern Namibia. The manager Fabian, waitress Meddy and worker Paulus made our visit extra special with all the effort they went through for us.
◆ Hands down the BEST food we had during our trip as well. The chef is incredibly knowledgable and talented. Went to bed every night completely satisfied. I highly recommend paying the extra fees for dinner. Breakfast was also spectacular.
◆ We went on a sundowner boat cruise where Paulus steered the boat. It was a great experience and truly beautiful, the complementary drinks and snacks were the icing on the cake.
◆ The rooms are incredible. They are spacious, clean and comfortable. The beds were top of the range and the shower is gigantic. Each room has its own little deck outside with chairs (the staff provides you with fresh coffee on your doorstep each morning!). The rooms also had their own kettle with tea and coffee options, no fridge though.

A few things to note:
◆ The lodge is NOT accessible by a sedan car during the rainy season. We were told it's possible, but with the puddles and clay sand it was a real struggle.
◆ There is not much wildlife at this lodge. If you want to visit to see hippos and crocodiles or to do fishing, I do not recommend as we were not successful in these aspects (however, please note while we were here the water levels were starting to rise. The river was quite shallow a few days before we arrived, it might be different if the water levels are higher).
◆ Since we're in the bush, insects is inevitable. Be sure to take your own insect killer spray as well as mosquito spray. We had a family of spiders breed out in the room which kept us up one night, but room service attended to this problem the next morning.

We truly enjoyed our stay, definitely the perfect place to come to relax. Also a good transit lodge at the Caprivi entrance. Highly recommend.

We have enjoyed our stay, the place was paradise to us, the staff were very friendly. We loved the idea of the new year's eve dinner along the river, it was refreshing you know. The rooms were clean insects and mosquitoes proof, we were impressed buy that, there's even insect repellent for outdoors.

Thank you very much, keep up the great work.
