Sondela Nature Reserve Accommodation offers a lively and family-friendly atmosphere that has been described as inviting, with a particular focus on improvement to create a neat environment for both adults and children. While the service garners mixed feedback, with commendations for staff friendliness and cleanliness, some guests have encountered slow service and maintenance issues. Although the amenities are generally celebrated, particularly for children, there are mentions of additional costs. Room experiences vary, with some guests reporting maintenance and cleanliness concerns. The value for money aspect of the hotel's offerings is often questioned by travelers.

Sondela is the perfect stay and we always enjoy our visits there. It is a real pity that the outdoor show was cancelled again. The only thing that worries me is that we received a an invoice showing no outstanding fees. On arrival and booking in I was told that there is a conservation fee of R70 outstanding and it is compulsory. I paid it but I would like to know these arrangements in advance.

Service we received from David, Thabang and Knowledge was excellent.
The Rooms and common areas was nice and clean.
Food was top Notch.
Even though you are next to the main Sondella area and pools, did not feel like it, as it was quite and Tranquil creating an atmosphere where one can switch off and just relax.
The private pool is also well maintained and only people from Country house can make use of this pool.

We visited Sondela campsite in September for a weekend with friends. We all enjoyed the camp. It was a very nice place with a nice campsite

The downsides were the small swimming pool at the campsite and the whole booking process and not being able to contact Sondela at all.
If you phone Sondela they would just have a message to say that you can email them due to covid and that they will get back to you in 24-48 hours. I emailed them twice and they only replied back after 7 days and not even giving me the correct information.

I also tried phoning the reservations phone number which I got on my booking form and I tried phoning the number probably 6 times a day and the number were always off. We wanted to change the booking and check in a day earlier, but we were not able to get hold of anyone

When we checked in at reception, they did not even know how much we should pay for the conservation fees and the extra car. It was like they were not trained at all and they could not even do a simple calculation sum.

We complained to one of the Managers and we did put everything in writing. Still no response from anyone.

We decided to book our October and November camp rather somewhere.

Hopefully they will get their act together in the future as it is a nice place.

I liked the seclusion of the country house from the rest of the reserve. The butler came to meet and welcome us at the gate and check in was quick and effortless and they had our itinerary laid out upon our arrival. The room was big enough and had pretty much everything we would need.

What I did not like, a lot of things. The pictures are misleading, the place is not 5* and not even close. It is run down and not well maintained. We were welcomed from the gate by the butler but no one helped us with our luggage. The aircon in our room (Heron) would trip on and off and made this loud rattling sound all through the night which made it difficult to sleep. And it was extremely hot so it was impossible to sleep without the aircon. The pillows on the bed were not comfortable. For a couple's only accommodation, the shower is too small for 2 people to share. Cellphone signal is poor in the area and we couldn't connect to the wifi. The patio furniture in the room is not well kept and comfortable. Breakfast was horrible. There is no coffee/juice station for you to help yourself at breakfast you need to ask for everything. They could improve by having a breakfast setup with tea / coffee / juice facilities and some muffins / cereals and a selection of fruits so you can help yourself and choose. On our 1st breakfast, the waiter took our food order but didnt offer drinks, we sat waiting until our food came and then we had to ask for drinks. Then our food was prepared incorrectly, we asked for no tomatoes and no bacon but it had everything we asked them not to put in. So we had to wait even more. Overall the food was very basic and not appetizing at all. On the Sunday morning we checked out and even opted to rather drive so we can have breakfast once we got to Pretoria. The service was luke warm, you could see the staff was trying but they are just not adequately skilled in hospitality and lacked the necessary attention to detail. Overall, very disappointing I must say. Definitely not what I expected or had in mind.

Our stay at Unit ACA209 was excellent. When we arrived the outside black bin was already half full with previous tenants rubbish, and for 4x days the bin was NOT cleaned, even when the braai was cleaned and dumped into the same bin.
Also main swimming facilities at reception left a lot to be desired, hot swimming pool was dirty, full of hair and other swimming pools were not cleaned from leaves ect.
Also the R100,00 charge for bringing your cooler bag into swimming grounds were not acceptable. It would be nice if the seating at the swimming pool could be upgraded, as the metal chairs had no covers / cushions. Some gazebos / umbrellas would also be welcome especially in the heat we experienced during our stay.

The unit: We stayed in Chalet 214 in Acacia (ACA214). The direct view from this unit's living area and veranda unfortunately overlooks another chalet, losing the appeal of the feeling of escaping to the "bush". The unit was only serviced every second day (not daily, due to covid..). For me, a huge plus of going away is usually the daily service of at least getting the dishes washed, so this was a disappointment. The unit is not ideal if you wish to "dine in" on a chilly or rainy day, as the only dining table is outside on the veranda (which is not sheltered from the wind).

The main entertainment area: The indoor seating areas at the restaurant / café at the main Sondela entertainment area, was not very appealing, especially when hoping to treat one's elderly guests on a windy/chilly/overcast day, where you would like to experience some creature comforts. The area is great for kids, but for elderly adults who are seeking some creature comforts, I do not recommend Sondela Acacia chalets or the restaurant/coffee shop. The pizzas served by the coffee shop/restaurant were good though! We found the front desk staff did not provide accurate information about the self-drive reserve routes or the actual "game" drive that we booked. The Spa attracted me to the resort, but unfortunately the sky high prices did not justify a pamper day.

We did treat ourselves to a fine dining experience at the Sondela Country House. This is usually reserved exclusively for their in-house guests, however, we were lucky enough to get a reservation as they were not at full capacity. The Sondela County House and the other units at the reserve should be marketed separately as they are very different and may lead to unmet expectations.

Firstly let me say that the accommodation in itself is nice and The Reserve is lovely.
The animals come quite close to your house.
So my comments below are based not on what is there but what i pay for what is there.
We stayed 5 nights and paid R3000 a night I think (Acasia Chalet)
If you want to use the tv in the chalet it costs extra.
If you want to use the air conditioner you pay extra.
There are no bedside lights in the 2nd bedroom so no reading at night for you.
You get dish-washing liquid in a small dispenser so each day you must ask housekeeping for more and use sparingly in the mean time.
it is a nice enough place but if I spend that money I do not want those kind of issues.
At reception you can't get a proper map of the place if you want to drive around.
They made a couple of errors prior to us coming with our booking and made some more when we were there with booking, renting of bicycles and when we wanted to leave to go to some shops they initially told us we still owed money. All was resolved but it looks and feels like poor staff training.
For a Narure Reserve I was shocked that at the shop they keep offering plastic bags and the fast food/drinks were no better in being eco-friendly which is not at all what I expect from a Nature Reserve.

We stayed in two different campsites with private ablutions. The following needs urgent attention:
The bathrooms and the scullery areas at the campsite needs urgent maintenance/replacement of taps and maintenance on shower doors. Showers are leaking so much that the floors are wet.
During night time, especially over weekends we could hear very loud music which sounded like a party, coming from the area beyond the horse stables. It seems that is where the staff are staying.
The undercover warm pool's floor and sides are coming off. My husband cut his foot on one of the pieces that lifted up and sustained a very deep cut. While we were there a little girl also cut her foot and her mother had to carry her away as she could not walk. We did report this.
Even though there is a sign prohibiting drinking and smoking in the warm swimming pool, staff of the cafeteria served people in the swimming pool with alcohol. They consumed so much alcohol that it became unpleasant for everyone in the pool. Are the staff not supposed to remind visitors of the rules of the resort?
The premises of Sondela both in the caravan park and the main entertainment area are very neat and clean but it seems that maintenance has been neglected for a while.

My neighbour very kindly gave her timeshare points to me, and I feel that they were wasted on Sondela. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, and the animals that visit on daily basis was just wonderful.
However, I would strongly recommend that guests DO NOT book during the week. Most of the activities and facilities only operate over the weekends. The main restaurant was closed, the general store closed at 4pm everyday, the kiosk at the entertainment area was closed too. No horse riding, no quad bikes and the farmyard is a joke.
The Wildlife Centre offers a Daily Tour and a Feeding Tour - both the same, except the feeding tour included WATCHING the ranger feed the animals - no animal interaction. And the variety of animals seen on their website, certainly did not match what they have - no cheetah, no giraffe, no rhino, no cubs. They should state what animals are available before guests pay for the tours.
Accommodation, wildlife and pools were lovely, but activities and facilities were poor and outdated.

Superb facilities, clean ablutions and well maintained gardens. the play area was well sanitized and the restaurant food was very fresh and well presented. we will def be returning to Sondela. Only negative I have is on arrival as 1sdt time visitors to sondela we weren't to sure of the the directions to the campsites maybe giving visitors a map of the are would help.
