We spent the last weekend at Mabalingwe and was very disappointed with our stay. The fridge did not work properly, the furniture and finishing in the chalet were ancient and the couches sunk when you sat on them. We tried to spend as little time inside as possible, which was a pity as we had paid quite a bit to stay the weekend. Please don't waste your money staying there. Our family booked via vacation club and their suite was amazing and that just showed how ripped off we were.

We stayed at the Tlou lodge and I must say that the rooms are really dated, the bathroom terrible and the bites from the bedbugs were appalling!!
Game was also very scarce, mainly Impala and warthog, with a few young Kudu.

We spent 3 nights over the long weekend at Tlou Lodge on a DBB rate. Mabalingwe is one of our favourite places close to Johannesburg to go game viewing, it is an easy 2 hour drive & in our opinion, great value for your money. We last stayed at Tlou Lodge about 5 years ago before the fire at the restaurant which has since been rebuilt & upgraded very nicely. We have also stayed in a private fractional ownership lodge since then. They also have many timeshare units of various sizes which one can rent on a self catering basis, however the restaurant, bar & swimming pools are open for use to all on the reserve. The shops at the entertainment area & caravan park are nicely stocked. A visit to Kalahari Oasis in the game viewing area is a must, open on the weekends.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that Tlou Lodge rooms are a little tired & need a bit of maintenance & upgrading but nothing really major. Below is the feedback I gave to the resort management:

Tlou Lodge:
The wall plugs by the fridge & under the dressing table in the room are very loose & pull away when plugging or unplugging which caused sparks which is a bit of a concern as it is dangerous & a fire hazard.
The door leading onto the little verandah was a problem to lock & meant the unit was not secured while we were out during the day.
We found the shower very problematic & every time we used it the bathroom would get flooded, we had to face the shower head towards the window which then flooded the verandah each time.
Given that the monkeys are quite a problem, it would be nice to have at least one window that is secured against them entering but able to be left open as it gets extremely stuffy inside with everything closed.

Restaurant:
The service and food was terrific, we thoroughly enjoyed all our meals. The staff were very attentive & helpful.
The chap that sang & played on Friday & Saturday night was excellent & great entertainment.
We found the restaurant to be very cold indeed at this time of year, even though we sat close to the fireplace for most meals, it lacks warmth & atmosphere which is a great pity & needs to be addressed & can be easily rectified with little effort or money.
Given that it was so cold, we feel that they should have plate warmers for the hot meals, as the food went cold almost immediately it was dished up onto the ice cold plates, which really spoilt what was great food.

We were very fortunate with the game viewing which we did in our own vehicle. We also love the bird life which even in winter is fascinating & plentiful. We had a big herd of Buffalo come straight through the parking between the lodge rooms on our 2nd afternoon. I also had a rare sighting of a rhino & her calf. On on our last night we were very privileged to be visited by the elephant herd at +- 9:30pm, grazing literally metre's away in front of the rooms which was awesome, they stayed for about an hour, the only regret was it was too dark to photograph them!! Quite amazing as most people spend their days trying to see the elephants in the game viewing area's & it is fairly hard to find them given the large area they cover.

It is a well managed and run game reserve and we had a wonderful stay and we are as always looking forward to our next visit.

Such a disappointment, draws in the kitchen did not fit and all fell out so you had to have the stacked on the counter tops.

One downstairs bathroom, the tiles fell off round the edge of the sink - dangerous as we had small children with us.

Upstairs bathroom - the shower was blocked, only cleared the water when you ran the tap in the sink, then all the dirty water came back up into the base of the shower.

Shower Head - Upstairs bathroom mostly blocked. They need to use Carbro Shower Head Cleaner..

Towels - Brown - very old and so smelly that we had to dry ourselves on our clothes. Could not wait to get home and have a proper shower as the smell from just touching the towels stayed on you.

Game Park...... We saw more game whilst sat round our braai outside the chalet.

Very expensive for what it is.

Bedding all very old - uck...

Thatch roof, holes in it - glad it did not rain.

Left a comments sheet and not been contacted.

Sent 2 emails and not been contacted.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We booked it through Groupon and the prices were very reasonable. The rooms were clean and the staff very friendly. Very nice pool and games area and lots of activities for the kids. The game drives were great though we mostly saw buck and a giraffe here and there. Nice place to relax and get away from the big city.

This has to be the worst resort I have ever been at besides there arrogance in dealing with their guests they have also showed that taking resposibily for their actions is not what they are about!

Please note should you ever think of staying at their resort in Tlou Lodge you will most definately experience no hot running water, The little catering equiptment available will probably not be functional and furthermore there ineterest in your problems will be even less.

During my resent Stay at the resort I was left for indefinate time with out any of the above mentioned problems and it was all made out to be either a comunication error or something they will improve on furthermore after expressing these issues at hand with the resort management i was not helped at all and requested to send an email a platform I believe the management use just to defuse and remove any responsibility from their side.

After two follow ups with them still replying to an email was still not evidant only after phoning them did I get a response which is merely the resort washing their hands and giving false expectations once again! Abdicating their direct responsibility and smiling and waving at the Sucker customer whom was just taken for a ride!

I spent the whole week at Tlou lodge and I was very disappointed as soon as I entered the chalet and was greeted by brown towels (which were not replaced when I left them on the floor after the second day, instead they were drapped over the wooden pole to dry). I am for water conservation, but using the same towel for 3 days is pushing it. A multicoloured bed cover adorned the bed and my herat jsut sank. The room itself was clean, but there were mice droppings coming down from the roof the whole evening and the ultimate was when it chewed the sugar sachels and I came back to a room full of sugar grains all over the counter. Although the bathroom and toliet were cleaned everyday, amenities such as toilet paper and soap were not replaced, I had one toilet paper the whole week, fortunately I always have toilet paper in my car. The food was not the greatest, who serves lunch of chicken-ala-king at an outside lunch venue in the middle of the Belabela summer? There was no vegetable in sight for two meals that I had at the place, lunch and dinner. I stopped going for dinner one night I foumd pumpkin swimming in oil and when I raised it the waiters tell me it's olive oil and I said I don't care what oil it is, I want pumpking to still have health benefits as a vegetable. The following afternoon I went to Belabela and bought myself something that I put in the fridge to last me the whole week. The game drive was also disappointing, we didn't see much, except for warthogs and variety of the buck family, the cherry on top was when we had a puncture and the vehicle did not have a jack, we waited for close to 2 hours for somebody to come with a jack and I can tell you by then I was very hungry as I didn't have much of a lunch.

After the reviews of other people we really hesitated to visit Mabalingwe and especially Tlou lodge. We were very surprised to find almost the opposite of most reviews. The rooms was really clean. The only problem that we saw was an old fridge but it worked perfectly. The food from the restaurant was included and wow wow wow… what a great experience with very friendly staff.

We booked our holiday (5 nights) from 18th December 2015 - 23 December 2015 online with Mabalinwe website, and could never ever have expected what we received when we arrived. When we got there, the place looked completely run down, the fridge was "missing"- when queried a fridge was brought, BUT did not work- all our fridge freezer items were getting ruined in our cooler box. The kitchen cupboards were water logged, and stained- no way were were using those either. Then the linen on the beds was stained and we found rat droppings on one of the beds. The furniture in the lounge was horrendous, with dirt, stains and rips all over. Added to this horror story was the fact that there was no TV in the lounge or even a fan in 45 degree temperatures!! Then we discovered that not only was there no wifi, but no signal at all, so if there was an emergency...sorry for you. After bursting into tears realizing we could never stay there, we approached the reservations office to inquire about "upgrading" to clean accommodation, we were only then advised that unfortunately they (Tlou Lodge) are in liquidation, so we have to may 100% again to move and we have lost our 100% paid to Tlou lodge. What a shock- Nowhere on any paperwork received from them did it state that they are in liquidation, which is compulsory if one is expected to take a risk booking with them!!! Stay well away from this disaster if you wish to enjoy a holiday

I was last at Mabalingwe over 20 years ago and was looking forward to returning. The reception staff were excellent and patient with any questions. The rooms were adequate. Could have had newer duvets, but beds extremely comfortable. Outside chairs were not very nice. We had the bad experience of having a big group opposite us who were noisy until 2 the next morning. I did report them to the reception the next morning and it was dealt with. That evening I called the lodge at 10.05 as they were still noisy and they send somebody out to sort it out within 5 minutes. Went horse riding, not great for a number of reasons, but have taken it up with the management. Overall not a bad experience, I would go back again.
