My wife and I, together with our daughter and her boyfriend, spent 3 nights at Itaga which was extremely memorable. We stayed in two superior chalets which were next to each other. The chalets were clean, spacious and comfortable with a nice en-suite bathroom, which also included an enjoyable outside shower which we made good use of. The bath robes and slippers that were provided, as well as the late check out at 13h00 were all very convenient. All the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive.
There are plenty of places to unwind and relax at the main thatched central complex, including lounges and a large deck overlooking a waterhole and the surrounding bushveld. There is also a lovely swimming pool with a deck area. Breakfast and dinner, which was included in our rate, was served on the central main deck and the food was excellent. High tea which is complimentary, is served daily at 16h00 and the snacks were very tasty.
Our two complimentary afternoon game drives at 16h30 and our one complimentary morning game drive at 07h00 were very good. We saw rhino, hippo, giraffe, blue wildebeest, jackal, lots and lots of warthog and plenty of antelope, including gemsbok, kudu, eland, waterbuck, nyala, red hartebeest, bushbuck, duiker and impala. The game rangers were professional, knowledgeable and informative. At the end of each game drive it was pleasing to receive warm facecloths to refresh ourselves. One evening just after sunset, we also witnessed a fantastic sight, as a herd of about twenty five buffalo suddenly arrived at the lodge’s waterhole to drink and quench their thirst.
Besides the game drives, there are many other activities to keep you entertained during your stay at Itaga. We visited the Mabalingwe lion enclosure and also went game viewing on horseback at Mabalingwe. Furthermore, we went on a quad bike safari at Zebula, which was exhilarating and a lot of fun. We also played boules at the lodge and had fun playing with the resident pets, Sammy the squirrel and Cooper the cocker spaniel. Watching the antics of the many mongoose that we saw around the lodge was also fascinating and entertaining. It was also special having a nyala bull and nyala females wandering around the lodge grounds, quite relaxed and unperturbed.
A special mention must be made of the spa at the lodge. We all treated ourselves to a head, neck and back massage which was absolutely brilliant.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Itaga and hope to visit again.

The lodge lived up to all our expectations. The location is fantastic, with distant views from the lodge over the bush to sitting on the verandah outside the bar overlooking the waterhole. Our only disappointment was the lodge is enclosed within an electric fence which keeps out the elephants but also the warthogs and small game! Walking is also not possible - a great shame as we all like to walk in the bush (with a guide/ranger for our safety) The accommodation is good, great furniture with a v comfortable bed, good bathroom and an outside shower! The main lodge with the central fireplace, dining, lounge and bar areas is well furnished, with the verandah overlooking the waterhole. the first floor deck is ideal for birding. The pool area is also well appointed with loungers and a lappa area. The spa treatment was excellent so say our wives! The service is really v good, the breakfast, afternoon tea and evening meal all of a very high standard. The lodge arranged game drives and a visit to the Mabalingwe predator park. Our only negative was the view of the hosepipe across the lawn and the pool equipment, empty dosing bottles etc visible from the paths close to the pool, a little attention to what the visitor might see! Thank you all at Itaga a great stay!

I am so glad we've discovered this little gem in the Mabalingwe Nature Reserve. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very friendly Corlia, who made us feel welcome and at home. Our room (No 1) was cozy and private with a comfortable king size bed, well stocked coffee&tea station and a bar fridge. The outdoor shower was a nice bonus with dassies sitting on the rocks watching you while you shower!
The game drives with our rangers Alec and Corlia were interesting and we saw a big variety of game. They are so knowledgeable and even identified trees and birds for us.
The food was delicious and the wine very reasonable priced.
I can most definitely recommend this lodge for a nice and tranquil break away.
We will be back!

This lodge it’s a bit confusing to review because it’s not an awful lodge. The staff are 5/5 fantastic, however the food was middle of the road bland and uninteresting. The rooms are tiny and share a wall with the next room so we could clearly hear our neighbours which was not nice. However as tiny as they are the are clean. Another disappointment was that game drives drinks are not included as part of the game drive package. I have never been to a lodge where we paid for game drives drinks separately especially for the prices we pay. Similar lodges around that area don’t charge for game drives drinks. Another thing game drives at Itaga are only 2 hours instead of the normal 3 hours like similar lodge.

We have booked on rather short-notice a three night stay in Itaga as we had to adjust our travel plans and were looking for a place not too far from Joburg (easy ~2h drive) with great possibility for game drive and a relaxing atmosphere, and at the same time fairly priced. What shall I say? This was the best decision. The lodge offers 8 stunning and cosy rooms and has a very relaxing atmosphere. But what it certainly makes it stand out is the amazing staff: Annelie, Aleck, Rosina and Simon (and all the others) make it an outstanding experience and really make you feel home. For example, my husband asked Annelie one day if by coincidence they had a certain type of battery (which is a rather special one) at the lodge – and the next day she brought it from a local supermarket as she saw it coincidentally! Also, she managed to move us in another room as we preferred a room with view into the trees. Aleck, the ranger, provided amazing game drives and shared a lot of his knowledge and went the extra mile for us to see two of the big five. He always had great mood and a smile on his face. And Rosina’s treatments in the Spa were sooo relaxing (and absolutely fairly priced) – I can really recommend it! One day, another guest celebrated her birthday – and they organized a wonderful high tea during the afternoon game drive as a surprise. I can only recommend this place!

Rooms were modern with a touch of wooden decor with windows looking into the surrounding nature and big comfy beds. Staff were so friendly and welcoming, full of smiles. Food was excellent with different options for dinner suiting all types of dietary requirements. The game drives were stunning and we saw a lot of animals including baby zebra, baby wilderbees and a baby rhino! The views were unforgettable and we had a great holiday. Claire and Gary Munn

The setting, food and staff are excellent.

We were warmly welcomed by the Staff and they went out of their way to make us welcome.

I feel the rooms and verandahs need refurbishing as they look old. The tiles in the rooms are aweful and it would be an idea to refurbish and modernise

Lastly - feel the alcohol is extremely expensive.

Itaga Lodge is located in the greater Mabalingwe Nature Reserve in the shadows of the Waterberg Mountains, and just 1 hour from Pretoria making it perfect for a weekend break. This Malaria free area of the Limpopo Province is home to the ‘Big 5’ but the Lions are kept in a separate enclosure.

We stayed at Itaga for 2 nights and had such a relaxing time, away from the hustle and bustle and the perfect setting to recharge and relax.

Equipped with a semi outdoor spa that opens out onto nature, a serene pool that creates the most beautiful scene overlooking a nearby waterhole where you can watch the nyala pass by, the warthogs enjoying their mud baths, the odd squirrel dashing past, or just listening to the beautifully relaxing sounds emanating from the abundant bird life, there’s no way you can’t feel like you’re at one with nature.

The staff are friendly and helpful and were keen to assist wherever required, the the managing couple, Althi and Jaces eagerly stand by to make your stay as memorable as possible. The rooms are beautifully set into the rocks not taking away from the natural surroundings and the lodge only accommodates 16 guests at a time so it still has a feel of exclusivity to it and never feels over crowded, and does not accommodate kids under 10 years old so your tranquility is guaranteed.
The game drives are relaxed and enjoyable and the rangers are knowledgable about all things Flora and fauna. I especially enjoyed our drinks stop where some ostriches got really close to us.

All in all, a most enjoyable stay that allowed us more than enough time to roam, relax and reconnect.

We spent 3 nights at Itaga lodge. It is a very private place with only 8 chalets and no small kids. Superior rooms are very comfortable and outside showers adds to bush feeling, great to use in summer heat. We enjoyed pool area and used spa for massages, highly recommended. Afternoon game drives were very informative with abundance of game to see in close distance. For two days some animals jumped perimeter fence and walked around the lodge to our entertainment. Dinners were very tasty but unfortunately had to be rushed due to COVID regulations. Breakfast a bit boring and lacked pastries. Lunch menu is small but tasty. Overall we had very relaxing time, good place to get away from COVID.

This boutique private lodge is an excellent, caring, attentive, comfortable retreat from the world. The room were amazing (and had an outside shower for that extra indulgence); the food was astounding and the environment warm, welcoming and peaceful.

The staff were engaging, helpful, polite, supportive, responsive and dedicated and all are excellent ambassadors for South African hospitality.

Apart from game drives, the lodge arranged for a range of other activities to keep us entertained and could not have been more helpful.

The rooms were spotless, comfortable and set out as chalets provided excellent privacy and peaceful seclusion; while the main bar / restaurant area centring around a fireplace provided an atmosphere of intimate cosiness and relaxation.

With access to the game reserve, this luxury lodge lived up it its reputation and is a must-stay for anyone wanting something special; something private; something indulgent; and something outstanding.

Itaga is quite exclusive so not much forr kids to do there. Your game drives and pool is about all there is but you have Mabalingwe Nature Reserve right there which you have access to . You would have to drive there though.
