I was GRANDPAcking in Santa Ana for 7 nights. I stayed all 7 nights at the Hotel Libertad. I booked a Double Room with Fan and Private Bathroom for US$16.40 / night (including taxes). The room was simple but came with a big wardrobe and Cable TV. There were over 100 channels but none in English. However, the in-room wifi was good. The Private Bathroom was basic, had a cold water shower, and needed a paint job. The towel provided was very small and hardly usable. The fan was a bit too noisy for sleeping. But, the bed was comfortable. I noticed the standard price for the room pinned to the inside of the door: I had paid US$16.40 for a room that should have been only US$12 … but, I am not sure that just ‘turning up’ and ‘walking the streets’ to find the cheapest hotels in Santa Ana is a good idea. It is, probably, best to pay the premium to book online … unless an hotel has been recommended to you and you know exactly where you are going. ------------------------------- I have been travelling for 3 years now and I am always careful about keeping my valuables safely locked up in my suitcase and about making sure that my hotel door is always locked. On the morning that I left, I gathered my suitcase to start packing. The digital lock had been forced and the zip into the case had been opened. Before opening the suitcase, I called for the manager. He was there in 5 minutes. He speaks good English. At no stage had any cleaners come into my room (nor offered to) and the manager said that I had the only door key. We opened the suitcase together and checked for missing contents. US$110 had been taken from my wallet. They had tried to take it in such a way that it would not be noticed until a later date. The manager was embarrassed and seemed like a nice, sincere person. He said that all of his workers had been with him for many years and that they were trustworthy … he came up with as many excuses why it couldn’t be any of his staff that he could think of. He was in denial … he has a thief working at his hotel … who has a key to the room(s). This is the first time this sort of thing has happened to me in all of my travels … it had to happen at some stage … it is a shame that it had to happen in a secured hotel … and, in El Salvador.

It's a pretty cheap hotel and that is also what you get. It is sort of a sex-hotel what makes it kind off gross. In the room was a poster with the text: by law it is not allowed to have sex with minors and you can also pay per hour. A bit weird for us and we didn't really liked it here. Also the bathroom was very dirty. They have wifi but it didn't work in the rooms, only outside.

Dear Lieve: Due to the laws of our country we are obliged to locate the posters that you express as in art. 8 of the Ordinance for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons, which states: "To place in a visible place a roll whose letters measure no less than two inches that read: 'Having sex with minors is a crime and is punishable by jail Article 158-173 ....' ' For this reason we are obliged to place these labels and we apologize for the case if you find it annoying but we must regine by the laws of our country

It's not easy to find that hotel, unless you know about it. It's hidden behind Parque Libertad, on 4a Calle Oriente. At first it may not seem to be inviting, but it has a lot to offer. A privare room with bathroom for 2 people costs $10 per night, there is also free wifi. The staff is super nice and friendly, and the hotel is in the center of the city. This is the cheapest hotel we found in Santa Ana (to compare: the dorm bed in a hostel costs $12, for one person).

We are backpackers so we weren't looking for the Marriot. We have been traveling around Central America for a month staying in hostels and cheap hotels. There are two really good hostels in this town but we stayed at Hotel Libertad because it was right off the main square and a private room with private bathroom was about half the price ($10 US) of two dorm beds($10 US each) . It was pretty clean (except the shower), the bed was hard/firm and really nice for my husband's bad back, the sheets clean and I felt very safe. It had a tv and free wi-fi in the room. The room was very big so we had a lot of room which you don't normally have in hostels. We went to check out the hostels and they were excellent but because of the price and location, we stayed put. The staff were very friendly. My Spanish wasn't very good and their English wasn't the best but we muddled through. The doors had a lock but also had a place to add your own lock. That was nice.

it's cheap @ $15 so if it's a night hop (as we did) it's passable but I wouldn't use as a destination... also, some locales helped us to find the place, they even picked us up and drove us there! we felt ok but they were concerned and quote "this is not a safe area to be a tourist at night so we wanted to make sure you get there safe" which was really very nice... the day vibe is fine... rooms are a but noisy, fan very noisy, bathroom a lil dirty... but again $15 for 2nd people... ... ...

This is basically a dive. But for $12 a night single with a great location next to the Cathedral and the main square I might actually stay here again. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very old and not well maintained. It also functions as a "love" hotel. My bed was fine but the pillow and towel were unusable. The private bathroom wasn't the cleanest. The area felt relatively safe at night and there are lots of eating options nearby and the plaza is very lively and entertaining at night.
