The rooms are clean and the pool area is nice (although a bit too small when the hotel is fully booked). Unfortunately that is all what I can say of positive things about the stay in that hotel. The Hotel has nothing to do with a 4* superior as they claimed to be. Maybe when it comes to the equipment, but certainly not in regard to the service. In order to sum up the stay one may say that hardly anyone is interested in their guests’ – neither management nor staff. A perfect example might be the fact, that nearest parking spaces on the “guest parking area” was reserved for the Hotel Mangement – something I have never seen in a hotel so far. The staff (except at the reception and at the pool bar) speaks hardly any English – only Italien. Futhermore there is not one non-Italien TV channel in the rooms. Worst of all was the breakfast situation. First the offer was miserable: One sort of ham and one sort of cheese. No fresh bread, so most of the guests decided to have toast, which ended up in long queues. Secondly the staff was absolutely unmotivated and disorganized. There were long queues every morning in front of the buffet. Guests had to check a clean table themselves since a waiter was hardly to be seen. Not surprising that you could witness hard arguments between guests and staff every morning. Not once on that 5-days-stay anyone had offered us something, we always had to make them aware of our presence. It almost hurts to watch them performing. We tried to have a pre-dinner drink at the hotel bar once, which was not possible, since it was closed (so you have to go in your dinner dress to the pool bar). The pool area was nice and the staff at the pool bar was very friendly. There were no beach towels provided in the rooms and nobody offered you one at the pool. So you actively had asked for them, which is quite poor for a 4* superior. Furthermore they charge you with 10 € every time you wish to change your beach towel According to the hotel description there is a private beach with a shuttle. Well there is a shuttle a few times a day and you have to book in advance (if you are too late it can happen that you wait a few hours). The ride to the beach takes about 20 minutes, but there is nothing like a private beach. It is a kind of a beach club with hundreds of people from the whole region. And in spite of Covid19 I have never seen sun beds such crowded. You hardly could change the position of your sun bed without “sitting” on your nighbours lap. And the worst of all, the hotel charges you with 15 € per room per day. Since it was nowhere written that the “private beach” is not included, I made a claim at the reception. As a respond I was informed that if we would have booked half or full board than it would have been for free. That lacks any logic and after what we had seen at breakfast we really had no desire to experience a dinner there. Well during the reclamation process we were offered to participate on a catamaran trip, which is apparently free for all hotel guests. So we booked such a trip. The night before we double checked the leaving time. When we got there the next day, nobody was there. Back in the hotel we were told matter of fact that the trip was not confirmed (however we never were informed about that necessity). Then we were informed that the trip was cancelled due to the choppy sea and assured us that all participants were informed by phone. I however was sure that nobody had called which was confirmed when the receptionist during the checkout apologized for forgetting to inform us about the cancellation.

Response from Emanuele Spennato, Marketing at Basiliani CDSHotels

Dear ClaudiaL2552 we are sorry that you did not like your stay at Basiliani. The beach service is included for those staying in half board and full board. We are sorry that you did not inquire or did not read the booking conditions correctly. Due to your discontent, we have decided to do everything possible to meet your needs, for this reason we have decided to refund the fee for the beach service. We are sorry that you did not appreciate our kindness. The guarded parking is available for all our guests, has a large capacity, only two places are reserved for staff. In those days 99% of our guests were Italian for this reason we concentrated on the sweet breakfast proposal. The catamaran excursion is also described on our website, and it is specified that the service may be suspended due to bad weather (which we cannot predict). We hope to see you again in one of our hotels in Puglia or Sicily. Kind regards

THE GOOD The location of the hotel is absolutely gorgeous, and roughly a 10 minute walk to the city centre. Some of the staff are very friendly and accommodating despite working through a pandemic I found any of them to be very pleasant(Specifically the senior members of staff on reception and the restaurant) , many speak English if Italian isn't your first language or you aren't confident in it. The architecture of the site itself may seem little confusing on first glance, but its well sign posted, so you won't have too many issues getting around and there are a few lifts dotted around if stairs give you trouble. The food in the restaurant is great value for money, very well presented and tasted great, the breakfast buffet was adequate, if you like them, I recommend ordering the scrambled eggs. The pool and bar area was great, there was music playing, good cocktails and most benches have been spaced relatively far apart to adhere to social distancing. The Spa, while limited had a lovely heated pool/jacuzzi section. It was the only thing available and only 2 people could use it at a time, but it was a lovely space. THE BAD Some of the staff, were very visibly and audibly annoyed by the guests, many commenting on how much people ate. The Hotel has room service as a feature but we had to change rooms to have that option become available to us, there wasn't anything on the site that claimed our particular room wouldn't have room service. The "Superior" room we upgraded to advertises a double bed, when in reality it is two single beds pushed together, the join was uncomfortable to sleep with. Some basic amenities were not immediately available in our room, i.e. razor, slippers, toothbrush. While not always expected, in a 4 star hotel and the additional price we were paying for the room I found it odd that all we were afforded was a larger space to sleep. The room was also fairly basic, the design was clean and well designed but the television was fairly small, and there were no USB ports for charging. The Spa again, while lovely still continued to charge you full price for a reduced service, I understand somethings are not available due to COVID, but having to pay full price for the limited things I can use seems unusual. The Wifi that's advertised through out the hotel is only available in your room (in certain spots) and at the reception I wasn't able to connect at any other spot in the hotel which was pretty dissapointing.

The Basiliani is a beautiful Hotel a couple of Km outside Otranto. It's a real gem with a fabulous big pool and grounds to accommodate lovely events of all kinds. We were there for 5 full days. UNFORTUNATELY, the service lacks refineness and professionality. On arrival no one even bothered asking if we or any other new guest needed a hand with the luggage The "porter" took us up and down stairs, elevators and corridors to finally end up (almost 5 mins later) 20 meters across the courtyard from the reception hall. There's a very small bar at the entrance but almost never anyone to serve anything. If you want something during the day you must go to the swimming pool bar - truly tiny - and be served a very limited amount of drinks served in flimsey disposable plastic cupsand almost no choice of snacks. We had two couplet of friends for before dinner drinks and it was almost embarassing and they too were shocked at the service, being locals. It took the barman - a very sweet guy - almost 20 minutes to give us our 6 drinks (all the same except for a juice) presented as though in a starless facility and we had to ask for something to munch otherwise they don't supply it. There were no other guests to serve so, incomprehensible as to the amount of time taken! Next morning we were late for breakfast and asked to buy for a coffee from the coffee machine 5 meters away from the reception area and again we were told to go to the pool bar - not at all close - also laughing behind our backs because we had the audacity of thinking it not a big deal to have someone make coffee. The breakfast service is pretty good and the waiters are friendly and helpful. A 4 star hotel just for its structure. Very clean, great beds and everything impeccably tidy but that isn't enough to get a good reputation. We weren't told or given any pool towels because the staff at reception in particular gives the impression that it's too much of a bother to communicate and be helpful to the guests as regards anything. I suggest they all get some training starting from the management staff. It was really depressing and a big let down especially after having read the positive reviews.
