I was told about Val and Moegeploeg Pub by a friend and we did the 120 km on motorcycles on great roads from Jhb. Having driven past the turnoff probably 100's of times, it was a pleasant surprise to find a little 'ghost town' with a busy breakfast crowd 8 km off the main drag. Great breakfast with bottomless toast and coffee, a quaint pub and garden setting and lots of bikers who had braved the cold weather shows that it is a popular destination amongst bikers. Highly recommended with a fascinating history per the numerous photos, letters and newspaper cuttings from years gone by in the 20 page menu - Mahatma Gandhi was reportedly imprisoned in Val in 1913.

I stopped here for an afternoon drink on a Vespa ride with friends. This hotel is situated in very peaceful surroundings in the quiet town of Val. It is an ideal place to recharge one's own batteries and quench one's thirst. The staff are friendly and helpful, and always on hand to replace an empty glass.

I will visit this tranquil watering hole again if the opportunity arises.

We toured mphumalanga on motorbike and stayed one night at Val hotel.the service was out of this world. The staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable and nothing was to much for them. Room 14 is a must.the food was good.

Old Hog's swang by on the return leg of our 2 night outride. Not knowing what to expect, the venue and decor was nostalgic and atmosphere great with large open garden on the seating side of the restaurant.

Unlike the good reviews listed below, we were disappointed from there on. The basic prego roll ordered by the 9 of us, took forever to exit the kitchen. When it did, it was sub standard. To us, it was an unused rump cut in slides, dosed in sauce and served on a stale burger bun. Served without sauce, one of the guy's found it unpalatable.

Being a mid week day, the leader purposely called in advance to advise our approximate arrival time. Notwithstanding, we still found the venue unprepared.

Sad ending for our trip, but this place is probably best suited for a weekend breakfast destination. No more...

We stayed over at Val Hotel(rooms 15, 18 and 19). We were welcomed by a very friendly Raymond. The rooms were fantastic. We had a braai the evening and enjoyed a bon fire under the stars. The Moeggeploeg bar was great fun.
Breakfast was great. The friendliness of the staff makes you feel right at home.

Such a stunning place. Really worth the ride out here from Johannesburg. Quaint and beautiful venue with friendly staff. Will definitely come again with the family. Only 110km from the east Rand and the roads are in good condition.

Great old fashioned hotel in the quaint town of Val. Good tourist and historical information available at the hotel. Restaurant with a veranda overlooking a beautiful garden, a bar (with ice cold beer!) and rooms available. Play on the old piano, visit the tiny museum or drive out about 10km to the Whiskey Train Memorial. The Voortrekker grave yard and Boer War Concentration camp is situated at Greylingstad, about 25km from Val which photographers will surely enjoy. Beautiful countryside, close to Johannesburg. Great idea for dirt or tar motorbike outride.

Val is apparently the smallest town in South Africa and it is very peaceful. It has one small street with music playing from speakers on poles. Feels like you are walking into the past. The church is small and charming; the restaurant offers tasty food (we had burgers) and local wine. Val is a ghost town- unfortunately- but it is a perfect spot to get away for a day and simply relax.

"The almost unknown little hamlet of Val is about 50 minutes from Heidelberg in Gauteng and only a stone's throw from Greylingstad on the road to Standerton. It is only 160km or 90mins from OR Thambo International. It is surely one of the smallest, cleanest and most beautiful little towns on the highveld and with only 28 inhabitants, it is really worth a visit. Val is an amazing venue for your country wedding. Get married in the The Church of St. Francis' of Assisi, and have your reception in the quaint hotel. It is a nice weekend breakaway from the hustle and bustle of work......"

"I have stayed a couple of times in Val. In the hotel rooms, every room are decorated in their own unique way.If you are a early riser (which I'm not), you can stay in the hotel rooms. I prefer the self-catering units, because it is not a close to the bar or the geese that likes to wake the guests very early !"
