Detailed Reviews
There are a lot of places to stay in Unawatuna and I can't believe my good luck at making the choice I did with Ridee Villa. I would say the reviews were the main reason I chose it - even though you can be wary of how genuine reviews are but my hunch was right and it gives me great pleasure to add to those great reviews. I was there for 5 days of scuba diving and arrived at 2am after a late flight and Sumith (the owner) was up to welcome me with some flowers. The room was lovely with really useful things like a variety of worldwide plug sockets/USB ports for your tech, a great bathroom, air con and space for everything. Breakfast was not only delicious but a work of art. I was given a lift in Sumith's tuktuk to the dive centre every morning and to Turtle Beach twice and I was given delicious fresh juices when I got back from my daily dives. He was keen to help me out with recommendations for places to eat, getting to Galle etc. I felt nothing was too much trouble. On my last day when I was counting out the cash to make the payment I counted out too much and Sumith didn't hesitate to tell me of my mistake and even when I was leaving a tip for the staff he and his manager told me I was leaving too much and however much I insisted they would only take less. I really respected his honesty and integrity. Sumith has an amazing personal story as well! I honestly felt I was staying in someone's home and not a hotel. I would definitely stay there again if I am lucky enough to visit Sri Lanka again but for anyone considering staying there, stop considering and book! You will love it!

Loved everything about this stay. A beautiful boutique hotel with unbelievable attention to detail in both aesthetics and comfort. The team at Ridee Villa could not be friendlier or more attentive to our needs. Unparalleled customer care. Unawatuna is also gorgeous and this hotel is very well situated. We spent a week here visiting this part of Sri Lanka and it was the highlight of our 3 week trip which got us as far north as Jaffna. So much to do to keep the adventurous family members happy but also so easy to visit one of the many beautiful beaches and relax. Great local yoga and meditation options too to get your zen on. Absolutely recommend staying here!

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful boutique hotel. So much to see around the hotel , and location is perfect. The owner genuinely cares about his guests and wants them to experience the best possible experience at his hotel and in Unawatuna. The free trips are a delightful addition and any questions are answered honestly and truthfully, and advice freely given. The owner is a lovely man, and his daughters are beautiful and so friendly and helpful. An amazing chef there who will cook you a delightful seafood meal. He goes personally to the fish market to select the best, freshest produce. We had the best time here, and thoroughly recommend. Would love to visit again.

Summith was a great host. Our room was upgraded when we arrived and was so comfortable. The hotel was really nice, clean and had lots of character. Breakfast was really good in the morning. Location was excellent and just across the road from the beach and main restaurants. Turtle beach was close and we were even provided a shuttle service. 100% would stay here again.

Property is not as advertised. It is next to the main, very busy and noisy, road to Galle from the South. It is, indeed, across from the beach but the road has to be crossed to get there. There is constant noise day and night, particularly from the buses that stop opposite.
The beach is not nice anymore, having recently (and unfortunately during the time we were there) been completely 'reinstalled' using very coarse sand brought in from Colombo. This is, of course not the hotel's fault at all but the information and picture on the website is misleading.
Advice: go to Mirissa, about 40 mins South by Tuk Tuk, beach is fantastic there and they also start the whale watching tours there.
There are only 4 channels on the in-room TV. There are plenty of sitting out areas but you are constantly disturbed by the road noise.
Read every notice they put in the rooms carefully otherwise your electrical equipment may not work when you leave.
They have put up quite worrying notices about using transport other than their own but we found no issues using local Tuk Tuks and even the buses to and from Galle or Mirissa.
The rooms themselves are fabulous but there is no view, and certainly no serenity (advertised on their website). It was not a relaxing visit when we stayed in April.

We stayed here one night as we wanted to stop by Galle. As other have mentioned: the staff is very attentive, breakfast is really nice, rooms are well furnished and comfortable, although ours was on the small size (we took a standard), as the bed was taking all the space. The one negative is that it's located on a busy road. So you do hear noise. And it also felt as if there were way too many rooms in one single villa. But that might be just me, as I prefer a villa/guesthouse with smaller rooms and more exclusivity, or a large resort. All in all, it's a good place for a stop over, but it did feel like it's on the pricey side. We paid around $170 US for a night (tx included), which is more than what we paid elsewhere in Sri Lanka f(including the south coast) for better accommodations.

The owners and staff at this beautiful hotel can not do enough to make your stay a happy experience. From the first day of our three day stay we were made to feel totally at home - from the bathtub filled with flower petals to the complimentary fruit bowl, beers in the fridge and the leaving gift of one of the owner's handcrafted pieces of silver jewellery. If I was fortunate enough to go back to Sri Lanka this hotel would be top of my list to revisit.

This is probably one of the nicest places to stay in Unawatuna and around. The staff are lovely and very accommodating and they really couldn't do enough for us. They helped us get reasonably priced tuk tuks, ensured the lovely towels, water and peanuts were provided for the beach and saw to it that we received fresh juice when we came in for the evening. We were even given a very lovely gift as we left which was really nice. The older gentleman who sits by the gate making sure that everything is as it should be was also a real sweetie. They have made a wonderful business here out of what used to be the owner's jewellery factory after he sadly lost everything i the Tsunami.
There was a slight confusion with booking as I initially booked a deluxe room as there were no VIP suites available, but was then offered a VIP suite, which turned out actually not to be available. However, Sumith (the owner) was very apologetic and after two nights in the deluxe we spent the following five nights in the VIP suite which became available.
The deluxe room was very nice, though, echoing someone else's comments, it was quite dark and was also located right next to a communal kitchen. The kitchens are a really nice touch and provide free tea and coffee and the capacity to cook your own food if you wish. This seemed particularly helpful for those with young children. Unfortunately some incredibly noisy and rude Russian people decided to use this kitchen to party until the early hours of the morning. Obviously this was no fault of the Villa itself, and Sumith, after receiving several complains, told them that their conduct was unacceptable. However, it might be an idea to put some sort of notice in the kitchens asking people to refrain from playing music/shouting etc in the communal areas late at night as it isn't pleasant for everyone else and is really not in keeping with the type of place.
The VIP suites are quite a bit bigger than the deluxe rooms, have a better view and, importantly for me, had a bath tub. However, while we did like the aesthetics of the room very much, there were a few of problems:
First was the noise from the road. The villa is on a very busy road and I did find this disturbing. It was better with earplugs, but if possible I would recommend choosing one of the suites behind slightly off the road, unless you are OK with road noise.
Second, we had a lot of ants in the bathroom, and I'm pretty sure an ants nest which needs removing. We did report this problem, but it did not seem to get rid of the ants.
Third and finally, there was a problem with the air conditioning as we seemed unable to control the temperature when it was on to anything other than freezing cold. As we only had a sheet to sleep under this made it way to cold to sleep and we ended up turning it off which made the room really too hot. Someone did come to look at it but it did not fix the problem and in the process removed the extra sheet we had requested so we endured another freezing/boiling night before managing to get another sheet. These problems did detract a little from the experience but where not detrimental. However, as the place is quite expensive for the area they do need to be addressed.
The food selection at breakfast was eclectic, but good with something for everyone. They are very flexible and really want everyone to experience the different fruits etc. The breakfast room is also nice and airy, cooled by fans. Though again there can be a problem with ants on the tables and getting onto your plate which I appreciate is difficult to avoid.
Finally, we thought it was a really nice touch that we received the complimentary meal on the second night of our stay. My husband is allergic to some seafood and they were very accommodating by switching this to chicken (though I was a bit disappointed as I love seafood and when I saw others eating it it looked amazing). However, this did not suit me so well as I think they had forgotten that I mentioned that I do not eat pork and the chicken seemed to be stuffed with cheese and bacon. - I did not find this too much of a problem as I was able to scrape the filling out, but I mention this as if it had been for religious reasons it might have been more of a problem, especially as I think I had already eaten some before I noticed. Consequently be very clear if there is something that you do not eat. Otherwise the standard of cooking was very good indeed and the food was delicious. Hopefully they will see there way to making a full restaurant one day as I think it would be very popular.
Overall I would recommend Ridee Villa as a nice place to stay. You really cannot fault the intentions of the staff. Had I just been reviewing the people themselves, I would have awarded 5 stars.
This place is best suited to those who prize good service at the top of their list of priorities for a hotel. Perhaps it is less well suited for those who want a party atmosphere, to be on the beach (I would actually probably have preferred to be slightly closer to the beach or at least the other side of the busy road) or to relax by a pool. All of these options are available in Unawatuna.
As ever I offer my feedback not as a criticism but as an opportunity for travellers to make the best choice for them so they end up in their preferred place and can give a fair review on the merits of that place, rather than its compatibility with their preferences. Also to make the place even better for those who prefer a place like this. As this hotel is so well managed, I have no doubt that my comments will be taken into consideration as the owners are very good people who really do want to give their guest the best experience possible.
