Secret Garden is an oasis within the lively coastal village of Unawatuna, just 20m walking distance from the beach. It boasts a 19th century Dutch-Sri Lankan Colonial Villa with bungalows and suites and a 4000sqm tropical garden. In the middle of the garden rests a large dome, offering 2 daily yoga classes, an on call Ayurvedic therapist for massage and wellness therapy as well as free space for dance, meditation and music. Our staff is courteous and warm. A large tropical breakfast is available daily at all times, and our two chefs are lovingly prepared to cook a great eastern or western meal for you on pre-order. Secret Garden provides relaxation and serenity alongside the opportunity to dive into the blue ocean of one of the country's most popular bays, experience the myth of the Rumassala Mountain and dance away at Unawatuna's many beach bars. May all be Welcome!

Upali is one of the best yoga teachers we had the pleasure of doing class with. A nice flow of yoga to suit each person needs. There were only 3 of us so it was one on one. Meditation to begin & end the class just what we needed while travelling.

Please attend his classes you will be amazed @ how you feel after. He plays a wooden flute at end during meditation.
He also does Ayurveda massage my husband got one as his back was acting up and he felt brilliant after.

Upali has a lovely way about him very sincere & genuine. He has a very caring and calming nature. Wished we could have stayed longer & attended more of his classes.

Truly in love with this space, a proper immersive jungle vibe with serene over arching greenery, tiny bridge walkways and optionable cute little cottage style rooms. The staff here are quick and prompt, well informed. Havent eaten breakfast here but it looked and smelled delightful! It is located walking distance from the market. Whenever I do return to SL, SecretGarden is hands down my first choice for stay!

We had a great stay at secret garden villa for 3 nights. The room was clean with incense on arrival with a huge bed and a lovely outdoor shower. We made the most of the facilities; we had dinner and cocktails at the sushi bar and did morning yoga in the domed yoga hut. The staff were all very friendly. The garden was amazing. Would recommend.

I don't usually review anything but this was the worst experience I have had in any vacation.
We have made a reservation for 4 days looking forward to being near the bea

We made a reservation for nights looking forward to being near the beach.
We got a mail 1 day before we arrived telling us that the hotel was overbooked.. How can it be overbooked 1 day before we arrive!? The hotel offered us another option to go to another hotel which was a joke, the other hotel was not situated near the beach and worst of all not in the same area and reviewed as a disgusting place..
We tried calling the hotel and someone who did not speak English started laughing at us ..
Seems that this situation happens a lots regarding the comments.
When we finally got someone who spoke English on the phone, the person assured us that we would receive a mail confirming that we canceled the stay and that the hotel would refund us everything, we never received any confirmation.. No one seemed to take any responsabilities, when we called the manager, he told us to call the owner and the owner would tell us to call the manager and so on...
We had to go to the hotel to ask to see the owner who did not want to meet in person but on the phone, we insisted until she finally showed up.
The owner was so rude and did not even apologies once, I have never seen anybody that rude to his customers!
We asked her to send us a mail to confirm that we would be refund as she told us previously on the phone that it would be taken care of but she said that she could not do it, is it that complicated to send a mail when you own a hotel!?
We finally convinced her to write something on a piece of paper..
After all of this, we had to come a second time to meet the manager who showed us that the reservation was refunded due to the fact that we canceled it.. Even though this was not the reason because the real reason was that they wanted to transfer us to another hotel because we understood that they had a connection with the other hotel..
Being so tired of the situation, we decided to leave and found another place..
The hotel seemed nice but it is not worth it, you will have a big amount of chance of being transfer to another hotel...

After reading great reviews on this place, we decided to book two rooms. One cost 130 dollars and the seconds one 80 dollars. After seeing the rooms we were absolutely horrified!! If it wet 20 or 30 dollars I would have somehow understood, but 130/80 dollars!!! The rooms were stinky and dirty!! No sheets, on room had its bathroom across the hall. You had to go through other rooms to get to one of them. I really don't get what the whole rave is about!! So even though we arrived at 11:00 pm, we took our stuff and found another hotel.

after reading such great reviews of this spot, we were excited to have our final last nights at the secret garden. We had been trying to confirm our room there for a few days, and finally a day before we got there, we received an email confirmation that a room was reserved for us.
when we got there we were shown our room - a huge dark room - i commented that it was so big but the guy checking us in told us that it was the only room left available.
The room was very basic, felt like a haunted old mental hospital and we shared it with 2 humongous spiders, however there was A/C and fans so suppose that was a plus point. The room also had no hot water (only cold shower) and no wifi - really basic.
The only good thing about the room was that it was so close to the beach, so we didnt need to spend a lot time in there. since we couldn't get any wifi in the bedroom we had to sit in the outdoor area at night - and because it's a garden after 15 minutes we had to run inside as we were being attacked by the biggest mosquitos and covered in bites.
the first morning we were excited about the yoga classes at 9:30 - however when we enquired about it the yoga "teacher" had just stumbled in looking half asleep and stoned and basically told us he would do the class later..whenever. just a washed up hippy - suffice to say we didnt bother taking his classes.

The other staff there were courteous and kind - we had breakfast there one morning, i ordered the fruit platter - but they must only have one kitchen knife as everything tasted like it had been wiped with garlic. yuk! felt bad for the staff so decided not to say anything to them

the worst was the manager - on our last day she appeared and informed us we would have to pay for the "suite" (the dank haunted hovel we had been suffering in for 2 days) it was $162!!!!! This was an absolute joke - when i tried to tell her that we had thought it was $62 (and even that i found incredulously high for the absolutely crap room we had stayed in) she said that she had the prices stuck inside a wardrobe in the bedroom - as if we even looked in the wardrobe!!!
she was obviously not going to budge on the price so we had to pay for both nights at this unbelievable price - NO HOT WATER. No Wifi. awful awful place.
we just wanted to get the hell out of there so we paid the price but will never ever go back there and would warn any prospective parties to look elsewhere! Unawatuna has a lot of much much better hotels to spend the time in.

secret garden was THE WORST hotel we stayed in Sri Lanka and for the price is DEFINITELY NOT WORTH it,

you have been warned.

Simona was utterly charming... as she royally ripped us off. This was our most expensive accommodation in Sri Lanka and the rooms weren't worth the price. They were charming enough, but pokey and the bathrooms were dusty, one was decidedly unprivate. When Simona quoted us the price, she did say that taxes still had to be added... our mistake for not asking what taxes, as she charged us for both service and tax on an already exorbitant room rate. We should have asked: it was 22% extra with the one tax added on top of the other! At breakfast (not included in the room rate - I hate this trend in Sri Lankan establishments, it's mean and money-grabbing), the staff kept on serving us food which we foolishly thought was part of our meal. I should have known better when I ordered the egg and grilled tomato only to receive one egg and a small slice of fresh tomato (someone is a bean-counter here...!) When we received our breakfast bill it was jammed (literally) with food we hadn't ordered, but had foolishly eaten (including separate costs for jam and toast!) Honestly, it's a sweet place, but not worth the ripped-off feeling you have as you leave, and the money-grabbing owner charmingly grins at you. The gardens are lovely, slightly shabby, with monkeys visiting. Bottom line: not good value for money.

If you like being ripped off for dark, dank, damp, bug-infested rooms, then Secret Garden is your place. If not, avoid it at all costs. The lonely planet writer was clearly a certain type of “traveller” with a very clear agenda – do not trust him.

First of all: the hotel is located in a beautiful tropical garden and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is delicious as probably the best available in Unawatuna.

It was the fourth time we travelled to Sri Lanka. The owner is very nice but when it come to the final bill, she just ignores previous arrangements (this happened to us and other guests so I feel compelled to write something here). We agreed on a price (incl. tax and service and breakfast) before by telephon and in writing but when it came to the final billing she just added 10% service plus the breakfast (at a "discount" of 6 instead of 8 dollars). We tried to clarify this with her (we are well travelled and don't argue about 5 dollars but it was a matter of principle) but she just ignored our arguements, probably knowing that people on holiday don't like to argue. For the sake of peace we ended up paying and leaving earlier than planned.

The room itself are quite damp and mosquitoes can be a problem. Location is great.
