The Thambapanni Retreat is set in a beautiful lush tropical garden, with birds, monkeys and butterflies all around. Our room was beautifully decorated in a rustic style, with bold colours, a four poster bed and a cement floor inlaid with brass flowers and wooden beams, very unique! The staff here are extremely welcoming and friendly, nothing is too much trouble. True Srilankan hospitality! The restaurant in the retreat was a real surprise! The food prepared by Chef Muditha was without doubt the best we’ve had in the two weeks in Sri Lanka. We tried the prawn curry, crab curry and the grilled calamari and prawns, all served with dahl, banana flower curry, pumpkin curry and green bean curry. Absolutely delicious, all cooked with different spices, yet the flavours complemented each other perfectly. And the price was the same as most of the restaurants in the town. This will be our number one choice when we come back to Unawatuna!

We used Thambapanni Retreat in Unawatuna as a base to explore Galle, Dalawella beach, Mirissa Beach and Unawatuna. We highly recommend this hotel.

It was a great place to stay. Beautiful gardens around a nice pool make it very cool in the tropical heat. Very short stroll to the beach means it is nice and quiet away from hustle and bustle (and noise.) Sitting on the verandah with a cool sea breeze looking through the forest with a troop of monkeys for company. The staff are exceptional and very friendly. The included breakfast is great. We ate dinner at the restaurant one of the nights- best chicken stir fry I have ever eaten!!

Thanks Thambapanni Retreat- We would definitely stay there again.

(Family with a 3year old and 1 year old)

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. All of the staff were friendly and always greeted you with a smile. We were in a superior room and it was amazing. The room was very spacious, with a high ceiling and designed around rock features in the bedroom and bathroom. The bed was a four poster complete with a mosquito net and extremely comfortable. There was some nice touches in the room,a fridge with snacks and drinks in for a small price, and an ice tray in the freezer for your sundowners. There is a kettle and coffee and tea replaced everyday plus two bottles of water. The bathroom was also large set on two levels, with a modern shower and plenty of hot water and toiletries plus a hair dryer. The air conditioning worked brilliantly and there was also a fan,so no problems with keeping the room cool. The outside balcony/terrace was the perfect space to relax,it had two wicker sun loungers and a settee. It gave you the feeling that you were up in the.canopy of the jungle and it was surreal to lay there listening to the animals and birds. The hotel offers all kinds of massages and treatments and between 8.30 and 9.30 is a yoga class for a small charge or you can book an advanced class.Services include tours and transport and if you have a late flight that are very accommodating and for early flights they provide breakfast boxes free of charge. The location of the hotel is perfect ,just off the main road makes it quiet and peaceful, yet you are a few minutes to the beach, shops and bars. From the hotel if you turn left at the main road, this takes you the beach ,also on this road on the right is a money exchange place .If you turn right at the main road from the hotel and go straight up the hill, this will take you to Jungle.Beach(about 20minutes ).Tuk tuks are always parked outside the hotel,so getting around is easy.We were on bed and breakfast basis and there was plenty of choices served buffet style but you could also have cooked eggs and there was Sri Lankan breakfast also. The hotel also served lunch and evening meals. If you are looking for somewhere to totally relax and chill out Thambapanni Retreat is the perfect place.

We stayed there for two nights during the month of February 2021.I would say, it is absolutely a very beautiful retreat in down south.

On our arrival, we were warmly welcomed and given a brief introduction about the property. They have taken all the precautions to avoid pandemic as per the guidelines given by the government at their level best and it should be appreciated.

Hotel was 5 min walk to fantastic beach, shrouded in jungle trees - with monkeys scampering through the branches - fascinating to watch.

There's a small / shady pool, (which could do with some of the trees over the pool cutting back to allow a bit more sun to filter through). Staff were all very helpful, smiley, happy, and conscientious.

All in all ... a great place to stay!

We spent the last few days of our 16 day trek at this lovely hotel 5 minutes walk from Unawatuna beach. The rooms were luxuriously comfortable with a balcony surrounded by bamboo and tree canopies, with monkeys climbing by and exotic birds calling. The staff were outstanding with their genuine warmth and welcoming ways. Many thanks to Luxman, Danuka, Farrok and Padmini for making our stay special! The fresh catches for seafood dinners were the best we've ever eaten. Despite it being a very much tourist resort, the sea is wondeful, and you have the lovely beach and warm sea to yourself early morning, or watching electric storms under a starlit sky while you float before bedtime. lovely walks to nearby beaches and temples as well. Alos full of quirky shops for those who like shopping for souvenirs or SRi Lankan jewellery.

The last leg of my Sri Lanka trip was spent at Thambapanni in Unawatuna. I spent three relaxing nights there and enjoyed myself. The property is located in a quiet part of town a couple of minutes walk to Unawatuna beach. It is also well located for a walk to jungle beach on the other side. I preferred jungle beach for a swim.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Overall a great place for relaxation. The spa and treatments were very nice and I had the luck to be massaged by Dinusha who created a great atmosphere and was very good!
Can recommend getting some treatments as part of your stay.

Firstly this probably merits 3.5 out of 5. The reason is I felt quite disappointed when we arrived, having booked directly with the hotel and asking for “Superior” rooms which bear no resemblance to the Superior ones shown on the well-known booking site. I initially thought we’d been given the wrong rooms and had to double check with reception . We had two rooms which at $96 per night were the most expensive of our trip. We don’t normally spend a lot on hotels so this was meant to be a treat at the end of a long tour. These rooms were pretty basic, smelt quite musty as they were built in to the rock face, had many steps to reach and the sofa in one room was torn. The mosquito net had several holes in it. I understand that Sri Lanka has had a rough time recently but to charge these kind of prices, especially in the low season is not really justifiable. The hotel really needs a good returb, and I noticed that the rooms below ours were being updated during our stay.

Plus points were the staff - absolutely amazing, helpful and polite and the food which was delicious- try the fresh fish/seafood plates.

Also it was really difficult to find! Put up a sign board!

The hotel has some way to go before it can be accurately described as a “luxury boutique hotel”. Overpriced.

I fell in love with the hotel from the first sight: the vibe, nature, smell, wildlife, hospitality.. everything! Our room 121 is not in the main building and I guess it's even better as there's silence. We have everything for the comfortable stay: 2 fans on the ceiling, an a/c in the corner which is great as you may not get a cold, a huge bathroom with all the necessary stuff, a tea set and a bottle of water which are refilled daily. People are hard-working, friendly, happy. They are ready to welcome you with pleasure. The chief manager at the restaurant (a handsome, hospitable man) gives the guests some extras, Lucky man brings coconuts for free (Thank you, my friend 🙏) etc. Breakfasts are awesome !!!! I still can't try all the dishes as I am quickly full. Don't hesitate, Tambapanni is a good value for money. Our friends stayed at Seaview Beach hotel that is closer to the beach and the price is nearly the same, but...the difference is enormous.
I am ready to give 10 out of 10, but unfortunately I have to minus 1point for the drawback named Inesh or smth like this. He is the only one who behaves as a peacock. He works at the restaurant and probably one of the managers, big size, drives a motor bike and wears a blue uniform. He is the most unpleasant spot at the place of Paradise as he is friendly only to the people who pays extra (for dinner, some smacks for example). All the other guests don't exist for Peacock he even doesn't say Hello to them.
That's why Tambapanni gets 9 out of 10 from me. Hopefully, next time you will be able to get rid of him
With all my love, Natalie

I am very grateful to Nandana, my yoga instructor in Unawatuna for beautiful daily yoga classes. I’ve learned a lot, as his teaching style is so that at the end you do remember the learned material. He is a very inspiring and kind teacher. He also pays a lot of attention to breathing techniques and meditation. Upon previous booking, he can also perform palm reading and is an expert in determining gemstones by astrology. The location for yoga classes is situated in the hotel on the second floor on the open terrace with beautiful jungle view and monkeys sometimes peeping to the class 😁 The staff of the hotel is very friendly when it comes to assisting yoga guests (making photos, giving complementary juices and organizing transportation). I can only recommend these yoga classes in Thambapanni Leisure by Nandana 🙏

We (family 6 adults) enjoyed a wonderful stay at Thambapanni retreat (hill site) at the end of our Sri Lanka tour. The staff was super friendly and helpful, the garden and rooms were amazing (room 101 is really special) and the pool is a nice one to cool off. There is wide range of massages, given in a separate room. Food was good, location is 5 min from beach and 9 km from Galle historic town. A great place to stay!
