......we were awakened at around midnight by the sound of munching outside the lodge! Who knew that hippos graze the whole night in the shallow waters of the Nile. At Bakers, you are privileged to watch them at night from the comfort of your lodge and during the day lounging in the Nile from the terrace. What an amazing place. From the moment we arrived, we were thoroughly spoilt by the wonderful staff. The lodges are all separated giving the feeling of privacy and an unspoiled view of the Nile. They are equipped with everything you need and are furnished beautifully. Meals are served in the main central area and tea and coffee are available all-day via a self-service area. The food was simply delicious and we were seated in a different place each time to give us all possible views. When we wet out for our day trips a picnic basket with coffee and snacks went with us. As we were there for Christmas day we were treated to a fabulous buffet with champagne, party games, singing, dancing and upon arrival back at our lodge a gift on the pillow. We had the most amazing time and would like to thank everyone at Bakers for making it so special.…
Great lodge, right on the edge of the river, with lots of animals very close. The staff are great and the service is good. Food was well prepared and the packed lunches and drinks very nice. There's a lovely pool to relax at the end of a hot day in the sun.
Our trip to Uganda in October finished at Bakers Lodge, and how lucky we were that this was our final destination. It was the true meaning of "ending on a high". Bakers is a very traditional African lodge. The main mess area is open and spacious, and constructed in a manner that is perfectly suited to the surrounds. Situated right on the banks of the Nile River, there is a sense of serenity and beauty...interrupted only by the evil laughs of the hippos which wallow within metres! This only adds to the character of the lodge: listening to them chomp through the garden in the middle of the night, right outside your cottage, is a wonderful experience. I found myself creeping about the cottage in the dark, spying on the silhouettes outside :) The cottages themselves are beautifully appointed, very spacious and airy, and with lovely views. They are well-maintained, and like the mess, suited to the environment. There is a swimming pool, however we did not use it. The staff at Bakers were all outstanding. The lodge obviously has well-established systems and quality staff, and the place runs like clockwork. Food was excellent, and they were kind enough to celebrate my partner's birthday with a cake and some brilliant singing and dancing. We could not fault the service we received here. Our activities were coordinated with, not by, the lodge, and we were not disappointed in any way. We enjoyed three cruises, including one to Murchison Falls, and one to the delta (where we saw the elusive shoebill). Our game drive was outstanding, plenty of good sightings, and it was spectacular to see game against the lush backdrop of Murchison Falls National Park. It is a very beautiful park. With many years of African travel to some of the best lodges and camps as his comparative data, my partner rated Bakers Lodge as one of the most outstanding places he has visited. The "recipe" at Bakers is perfect, from the lodge to the staff to the setting. Unlike many of the newer lodges and camps in Africa, which seem to be adopting a "contemporary" but seemingly international and therefore almost cookie-cutter design, at Bakers you know where you are, and there's not many places we would rather be :) Many thanks to all the staff, and to our guide, Ellis. If there was only one place in Uganda we could recommend to our friends, this would be it. NOTE: sadly, construction relating to oil drilling is underway within Murchison Falls National Park. We would certainly recommend that anyone considering visiting the park does it sooner, rather than later, as the effects of this construction cannot be anticipated (but can be imagined).…
A great location for animal and bird life with friendly helpful staff, excellent food and service. It is remarkable that Baker's Lodge can deliver such a high standard out in the bush, on the banks of the Victoria Nile. I'd recommend the boat trip on the Nile as you might get lucky and see the Shoebill and the Murchison Falls are spectacular.
We spent 2 nights at Baker's Lodge and wish we had stayed longer. We were greeted by Bernard the manager, Winnie with cold juice, and Mary who took care of our luggage. The staff was incredibly sweet and caring. Our room overlooked the Nile with the sounds of Hippos nearby. The room and bathroom was comfortable and large. We particularly liked the wake up call - someone gently calling for us from the patio. The 4 course meals delicious. We really wish we had more time to just simply enjoy the lodge rather than just a place to come back to at night. Guess we have to go back!
