We were exhausted, and just checked-in in a quite cheap hotel but we wanted to eat nicely so we tried this one and we didn't regret it. due to covid times, the menu was restricted but we had a choice between some fish (grilled, etc.) butter chicken, tandoori chicken and goat curry (indian dishes) and a few other options. We were almost the only clients, and it took them only 30mn to bring us the food. Best goat curry ever. The butter chicken was excellent too. the waitress was adorable, the place is the oldest hotel of Uganda (or the region ?) build in 1923. the only bemol was the colonial sculpture at the entry of the restaurant (akward, does it glorify colonialism?)
My colleague and I needed a place to stay on our way back to Entebbe after a drive through Murchison National Park. We called and booked into the Masindi Hotel and had a great stay. The rooms are comfortable, but basic. The new owners, Rahim and his wife, have taken over ownership from her parents and are doing their best to slowly renovate the hotel in keeping with its past glory. Their plans include renovation of the Hemingway Bar, where the author liked to frequent. The tracks are long since gone. Notable past guests include Ernest Hemmingway and the cast of The African Queen. This alone is worth a stay. We also ate ate the restaurant and it was one of the best meals I've had in my four years of coming to Uganda. We both had the tilapia which is caught fresh from Lake Albert. It's been a tough tourist season in Uganda so if you are considering a trip to Murchison Falls National Park, Inhighly recommend stopping a night at the Masindi.…
Great location for a stopover from Kampala to Murchison Falls especially if you stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary or want to bird in Budongo forest. We spent 2 nights here to explore the area. Rooms were comfortable, food was good (order the Indian dishes). Friendly owners and staff, pretty grounds. Lots of character from a bygone era. Including a bar where Hemingway, Bogart, Bacall and Hepburn relaxed.
Nice historical building but the rooms are in a terrible state. Painting falling from the walls, old cupboard, leak in the bathroom that was fixed with a botched job. The toilet seat must have been from the date of creation of the hotel... The food was really not good neither. It's a pity because there is a lot of potential. The owner was very very nice and I hope he will reform the hotel quickly
Stayed a 5 nights and really loved this hotel. It's hard to believe that the hotel is the oldest hotel in Uganda (it looks a feels great). The food is excellent! I love the environment! Their service is great and they made me feel welcomed. I also love the fact that it's 21kms away from the gate to enter the national park. Masindi Hotel, you are the best hotel in Masindi. Well done of keeping a historical site alive and where we can still experience it!
