After an unfortunately bad hotel experience further along the beach, we were extremely grateful that Upendo had room available for us for a 3 night stay during our recent trip to Zanzibar.
As we checked in we were greeted with a fresh coconut and the hotels guard doggies wagging their tail; it was bliss.

Our room was available immediately as the staff had been in to make sure everything was perfect before we arrived back with our suitcases. Honestly, our room was world’s apart from the room we had just come from – but I don’t want to dwell on the previous hotel – all I can say is that Upendo was absolute heaven. Our villa was standalone and on the beachfront so when we opened the curtains we could only see the sand and sea. On the front patio area we had a gorgeous hanging double lounge bed which we spent most afternoons chilling on! Inside the room it was nice and light with lots of small windows covered by mosquito nets which meant we had lovely day light.

The bathroom was one of the highlights of the room for us, it was huge. As you walked in, to the right hand side, just under the window was a lovely free standing bath followed by a Jack and Jill sink, the toilet and then the highlight, an outdoor open air shower! The shower had a waterfall shower head hanging from the ceiling; a huge piece of drift wood which was used for holding the complimentary shower gels and other toiletries but the best part of this shower was the plants and trees which had grown up the outside of the shower room and into the shower itself, it just gave it that real jungle feel.

The room was gorgeous and felt very rustic and authentic yet with modern furnishings. It had a coffee machine with pods refilled daily; a water dispenser so we had unlimited access to complimentary water; gorgeous toiletries in sustainable glass bottles and of course, the best part was our private rooftop swimming pool!

Upendo is located at the far end of Pingwe beach so after breakfast we would go for a lovely walk along the beach and onto the sandbanks where the tide had drifted out. Also along Pingwe beach is a great choice of restaurants so each lunch time we decided to head out to find some of the local seafood restaurants.

Upendo has a popular restaurant with an extensive menu so each night we stayed at the hotel and tried a different dish on the menu. The food was incredible and we loved the relaxed vibe of the restaurant, we could just lounge around for hours on the sofas.

The hotel staff could honestly not do enough for us during our stay and nothing ever felt like too much to ask. We would return to this hotel in a heartbeat.

As we sat in one of the booth (which became my fav spot in Upendo), I forgot that there is such thing as time - what a magical place. The perfect place to master the art of doing nothing.
Ordered some bubbly, then shared some few dishes: sticky chicken, calamari and chorizo salad, bbq chicken and 1kg of crab! If you are not sure what to order, you can’t go wrong with any of the above!
Room had custom made furniture with timber from old boats in the spacious bathroom, a large bed and a glass wall to contemplate the ocean as you wake up.

Upendo means love in Swhalili, and you got to love Upendo.

Staying at upendo is just a little bit of paradise. The chillout area, the rooms, the service and the food - everything and every detail was made with so much love (upendo means love in Suaheli). Its definitely a wonderful place to chillax and enjoy your holiday! Btw, "The Rock" restaurant across from the location gives a nice view but is not necessarily worth a visit.

Upendo Beach was such a fantastic place to stay when we were in Zanzibar. It is further away from the busier parts of the island which is exactly what we wanted for our beach downtime. We also were occupied with Kite Surfing and a fishing charter. Getting to places was easy and the hotel driver was able to take us there (for an additional fee). The restaurant and bar are also good.

When organizing activities or if we had any questions, Geoff was an amazing resource. He was truly helpful in making our stay at Upendo Zanzibar amazing. Every workplace dreams of an employee like him.

I rolled the dice booking this resort and hit the jackpot! This resort has all of the creature comforts found in more expensive resorts with elegant touches you don't find elsewhere at all. We were in one of the 1BR villas with a rooftop pool. The villas are very private and tucked close to the caves/rocks at the end of the beach.
Favorite things:
*Full-on view of the ocean from my bed
*Robes provided for walking the beach and lounging at the restaurant
*Lanterns to light our way to the villa magically appeared at dusk and vanished by dawn
*bringing a blanket up to the rooftop lounge chairs at night to look at the stars
*Trish, the owner, who is an encyclopedia of all things Zanzibar
*Breakfast! Lunch! Dinner! They should publish a recipe book.
I've read some reviews that say service is slow at the restaurant. That's not Upendo, that's Zanzibar. Pole Pole, right?
Thank you for everything, Upendo. We will be back as soon as possible. HIGHLY recommend.

We stayed here for 2 nights in the sea view suite and it was just pure bliss and relaxation. The room was absolutely beautiful with a spacious bathroom and full of amenities. The balcony was huge and had a great view of the ocean and the Rock. The infinity pool overlooked the beach with lots of comfortable sofas/loungers. The food at Boho Social was fresh and delicious and the cocktails and drinks were really great value. It had a great vibe during the day and in the evening. A special mention to Theo and Geoffrey who couldn't have been more helpful during our stay! Would highly recommend Upendo to anyone looking for true luxury on the beach in Zanzibar :-)

We booked Upendo Beach for our honeymoon, following a week safari in Tanzania, and it was a perfect place to relax after all the trekking around. The villa decor is beautiful, the rooftop has great views of the ocean, particularly good for sunrise. The decor is pretty cool, and the service/ staff were honestly amazing. Geoffrey, Serena and Paola went out their way to ensure we were as comfortable as possible. Not only were they great at organising any possible excursions (stone town / boat to paje) but they were really helpful with restaurant/ cafe recommendations. Upendo House in Stone Town is also worth a visit - super nice rooftop to watch sunset with great cocktails and food.

3 nights at Upendo Beach were awesome. We then chose to move to the North as we found that side to be too far to visit without it feeling like a trek. The beach front at Upendo is affected by high tide / low tide but this was actually quite nice to watch!

Thanks to everyone at Upendo Beach for being so accommodating.

My husband and I spent two nights at Upendo Beach and the stay was wonderful. Once you arrive, you are welcomed with a fresh coconut juice and a warm and welcoming staff. What makes this place most special is the view of a pristine beach and The Rock Restaurant - a landmark on the island. The staff were very friendly throughout our stay, and the food was delicious. I particularly want to thank Theo for his support in organizing our activities and transfers; he’s the best!

Situated in Pingwe, Upendo Beach is right in front to The Rock Restaurant and there are a lot of tours and activities nearby.
The beach is not the best to swim, which is obviously not Upendo's fault but it's possible to walk in a beautiful sandbank during the low tide and the hotel has swimming pool.
The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated.
We stayed at the suite with sea view which is actually part of the 3 bedroom villa (we didn't know that). It was okay for the first nights but at the last night there were more guests in the other rooms of the villa and it's possible to hear everything which doesn't feel to private as the only thing separating us is a thin door.
For that reason I would recommend the one bedroom villa with private plunge pool if you are looking for privacy.
The doors and windows needs refurbishment.
Its a little bit overpriced.
The staff is friendly.

We did not stay at the resort however we frequented the restaurant and simply put the food is awesome. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all quality affordable experiences with amazing views! We enjoyed the food more at this location than our own 5 star resort around the corner and their sushi nights are really worth it. The staff are friendly, the location gorgeous and management is on it preserving the standards.
