Had a fabulous 3 night stay recently with guests from Ireland. They were blown away by the hospitality from Dora Frans and staff as well as the spacious and spotless rooms. Meals were of the finest quality and the lodge is situated in beautiful African scenery. We felt very safe and welcome. Highly Recommended.

This is such a special place,13km from the nearest tarmac road in a very beautiful, peaceful valley, with a carefully managed population of predator-free game (zebra, giraffe, ostriches, springbok, kudu etc). It's a convenient base for visits to Rorke's Drift and Islawanda, but it is so much more than that: Dora and Franz are the kindest and most generous hosts imaginable. Franz took us on an unforgettable two hour drive around the farm to show us some of the animals as well as some very interesting San rock paintings. Poor Dora was out of action with a broken leg, so it was again Franz who served us a delicious meal on the wonderful thatched veranda the evening, in front of a blazing log fire. We had the lodge to ourselves, and stayed in a lovely, airy and stylish room with a balcony overlooking two ponds and the veldt beyond. A time to treasure - thank you so much.

Me, wife, and her sister had the lodge to ourselves. We self-catered so can't comment on provided food but the range of cooking utensils in the lodge kitchen was quite impressive.

Both Dora and Frans were there when we needed them for advice but otherwise left us in peace. And what peace it was! Set well away from any towns or major roads and surrounded by wondeful scenery. Sitting on the stoep (veranda) in the evening with a drink or two with a log fire providing unnecessary heat but a means of cooking listening to the frog's evening chorus and doing a bit of star gazing reminded us that there's much more to life than zooming down freeways or listening to the neighbour's kids and weed-eater.

Like the other poster says, Frans is more than willing to take you out on a game drive; Ostrich, Zebra, buck and eight Giraffe's (one four weeks old at the time of our visit - Frans bemoaned the fact that it was another boy)

There's also a few bushmen paintings in a rock overhang on the estate that Frans drove us to.

We would have absolutely no hesitation at all in recommending Nxala although I would say it's mainly adult orientated.

We had a super relaxing 3 nights here & loved the location & accommodation. We stayed in the Main Room bedroom, which was very comfortable, complete with a balcony overlooking 2 ponds. Dora & Frans were excellant & attentive hosts, delcious meals were served outside infront of a roaring fire. Eating inside is also available. Dora arranged a professional guide for us to visit the nearby battlefields, a real must. Frans took us on a very enjoyable & entertaining afternoon game drive around the estate & a visit to a cave with San Rock Art. The bird watching was very good too! A place we would love to return to one day.

Our second visit and still our favorite place on the planet! Nxala is all about relaxation. Take a couple of hours to acclimatise to the bird life and it's range of species will astound you. The food by Dora is exceptional, the drives by Franz are interesting and informative.
The accommodation is wonderful, evenings in front of the fire place watching and listening to the wildlife are a thing I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

This is a great location to visit the battlefields, Dora and Frans were excellent hosts, with Dora in charge of the super food and Frans the genial 'waiter'
The rooms were clean and very comfortable, dinner taken on the terrace with a beautiful view over the lake.
Frans took us on a tour of the ranch which does also have giraffe and game the highlight the being proudly shown some ancient rock art.
One of our best stays of the trip.

If you enjoy staying off the beaten track, the sight and sounds of all types of wildlife from your balcony, excellent food, comfortable accommodation, wonderful hosts (Frans & Dora are the best), mini-safari, bushmen paintings, close proximity to the Zulu battlefields, staring at the night sky, and not forgetting tea/coffee and scrumptious homemade cake on arrival NXALA RANCH is for you!! We stayed for 3 nights (not long enough) and are planning to return next year. We have travelled throughout South Africa and stayed at numerous B&B accommodations over the years but Nxala is our favourite.

We were recommended this B and B from our travel agent because we wanted to visit the battlefields, which are in the area. Unfortunately, we only stayed for 2 nights and wished we could have stayed much longer!

Frans and Dora are such wonderful hosts and make you feel like special guests in every way. We had the large room upstairs, which had a wonderful balcony overlooking their pond and the large ranch. The sunsets were spectacular! We enjoyed the restful nights and the wonderfully cooked breakfast and delicious dinners by Dora and Frans. Frans' Braai (barbeque) was some of the best we had during the entire trip.

Frans showed us around his ranch including the ancient cave line drawings, which were high impressive. My wife had never seen an ostrich before, so we enjoyed seeing them run around, the nests and having a chance to pet the baby ostriches.

If you are ever near the Dundee area, or are looking for a wonderful place to relax, I would highly recommend Nxala Ranch! It is a bit hidden, but worth finding.

Thanks to you both, Dora and Frans!
