Penryn B&B, Dundee
Such a beautiful place in which to linger. My husband and I spent three delightful nights at Penryn B&B during our recent (May 2022) Battlefields Tour, and I cannot rate the inn highly enough to do it justice. I believe that Pieter Bester recently purchased the property so I do not necessarily know what innovations he has introduced other than himself as gracious host. It was so charming to have him join us for a drink during supper and to bring along his son one evening. We had a lovely chat. One thing I do know is that Pieter has found a jewel of a chef to run the kitchen. Jonathan is a treasure. We had no intention of dining in other than the first night, but dinner was so fantastic – and so personalized – that we ended up taking what was essentially a full-board plan. Jonathan even prepared picnic lunches for us so that we could eat right on the battlefields. Of course, we ended up eating far too much, but everything was so delicious that we could not say “no.”

Clearly, the gardens are not new – and they are gorgeous. Little brick pathways weave in and out of planted areas separated by trellises and benches. What a lovely spot for a wedding or special occasion. Our room was adjacent to the main house and included a small terrace where we could sit and enjoy the roses and many other flowers still in Autumn bloom. I would love to visit Penryn when the Clivias flower. We were sent off each morning with waves and fanfare and greeted again in the late afternoon with a warm welcome before we crashed in our comfortable bed and rested for dinner.

Penryn B&B is one of those perfect little “finds” that one cherishes and remembers long after the experience ends. I cannot imagine Dundee has anything better to offer. Pieter and Jonathan make a wonderful team and know how to make guests feel truly welcome. Sandra Molyneaux; Valencia, Spain

We had a very good 2 night stay in the self catering accommodation. Management gave us an extra room without charge and we really enjoyed our stay despite the problem of load shedding (scheduled electricity cuts that are a hazard of life in RSA).
Worth a try if you go to Dundee as part of the Battlefields tour

We spent one night at Penryn Bed and Breakfast in Dundee on our way back from our vacation. The rooms were comfortable , clean and neat. We were served a delectable dinner and breakfast. Our compliments to the chef! The owner, Pieter, as well as all of his staff were all very hospitable and attentive. Keep it up and good luck with your future endeavours!

We spent just one night at this B&B on our way from Mkuze to the Drakensberg area. There are very nice gardens with lots of friendly cats. Our room was quite large and well appointed but smelt a bit musty and on our arrival all the windows were firmly closed.
We felt that the service was a bit impersonal, especially at breakfast.
There is a restaurant close-by where you can have dinner. Would probably not hurry back and find alternative accommodation on the way.

Lovely rooms in a building with character and beautiful grounds. All in a central yet quiet, location. Great base for exploring the area or for stopping over. Pieter is very responsive and adaptable. He also has a wealth of knowledge so can easily advise.

Stayed here for one night in January in the self catering part of the lovely house. The landlady was very pleasant. Sadly the self catering kitchen let the experience down. It was ill equipped to cater for 4 people as advertised...not enough plates or cutlery, dirty dishcloth and teatowel and an unclean kitchen. Also the layout of the apartment meant that one had to walk through the main bedroom from either the twin room or lounge to reach the only bathroom. This is not an unfair review, I mentioned the above to the landlady on leaving.

We had a very pleasant stay at Penryn. It's very clean, quiet, central and well run. Friendly service and a comprehensive breakfast was served. The rooms are well equipped , the beds were comfortable and warm. We had a toddler with us and nothing was too much trouble to make our stay easier. We will go back definitely.

A group of 10 Army mates, all over 65 arranged, a visit to the battlefields of Isandelwana and Rourle's Drift near Dundee. We also visited the Blood River and Talana Battle sites. Finding the right "Base camp" was very important, as some of us are feeling the twinges of old age, and wanted to be comfortable in congenial and comfortable circumstances.
We were fortunate in staying at the Penryn B&B, run by Carol and her wonderful staff. Carol went out of her way to ensure that we had a great time Being housed in a Victorian house with high ceiling and lovely English garden, added to the atmosphere that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the period of the Zulu and Boer wars. I can strongly recommend the Penryn B&B for those visiting the area.

My husband and i had a particularly lovely stay during this past weekend! Everything was immaculate, tranquil, stylishly decorated and super comfy! The gardens are beautiful and there are lovely spots to sit out quietly and enjoy the enormous trees and stunningly created flower beds. Breakfast was delicious and nothing was too much trouble from Carol, the owner - i loved the fact that she is on site and there for any extras and help we might have needed. We cant wait to go back!!
