Detailed Reviews
A lot has changed in Tete / Moatize the last couple of years with a lot of new hotels popping up. The Hotel Moatize is in a convenient location outside of town and close to the airport. Good restaurant and a pool available.

We weren't scheduled to stop in Moatize/Tete but circumstances dictated an overnight stay at Hotel Moatize. It's pretty upmarket - nice furnishings and finishes: air-con, TV, modern bathroom and shower, inviting pool. A little bit expensive at around $150 per room per night, but the area seems generally very expensive (with all the mining activity pushing up prices). The adjoining restaurant is also nice but the prices quoted in the dinner menu seemed exorbitant. Breakfast was included in the rate, however.

Room Tip:Â Large hotel with lots of rooms - all seem about the same. No view to speak of in Moatize.

I have stayed here twice. They are consistent in service. Prices a bit expensive for what one gets, but then there is not too much competition. Rooms are functional. The bed is not the best but functional enough. Internet is terrible, although free. This is not great when one is on business. very frustrating to work if one has to.
The restaurant is good for dinner, but beware the fish I had on a couple of occasions is VERY bony. Great chilies if you like that sort of thing. Breakfasts included) are very average, with no great variety.
It's practical and functional.

Room Tip:Â No real difference between rooms. None have very good views. 2nd floor is better if you can get it.

The room is in a bad state. The safe is not working. The fridge is not working. The aircon is noisy. The food is totally over priced for the average quality tey serve. The oher guests had a party right in front of my door until 11pm. Sleep is not good on the very thin mattress. Linen is hard. Really not a good deal for the price they charge. They have free wifi but the internet speed is 0.02MPS

On my way to Harare Zimbabwe February end, I decided to sleep in Tete Town Mocambique as I had left Malawi a bit late. I arrived in Moatize around 19:40hrs and it was impossible to proceed as the driver was tired and car had flat tyres.
Well here we go; where do I sleep as this was not my original plan? How will I communicate with the locals since Portuguese is official language. These were the questions I had in mind.
Then I saw Hotel Moatize, mmhh it was nice and worthy it. Language was easy as most spoke Nyanja/Sena which is also common in Malawi.
Tete is most of the times hot and if you need to sleep over you better find a place with good Air Conditioning facilities otherwise you won't sleep or you will sleep outside in search of cool air. I loved Hotel Moatize as I was able to sleep properly and proceeded with my Journey the next day.
Mocambique I enjoyed the fish I bought in shoprite along the road after crossing Zambezi River and also the prawns on one of restraunts which I can not remeber, I will come again for another bite.

I was in Tete for a business meeting and found myself staying overnight at this hotel as the radison was fully booked. Now don't get me wrong, i wasn't expecting world class luxury in this mining town but I did expect a decent meal. I ordered a pizza which was so full of chillies (pili pili or peri peri) that I couldn't go beyond one bite. Bear in mind, I am Indian and I thought i could take my chilli.
Went to bed in a room which had right outside the room, what can be best described as a street light. The curtains were so unbelievably thin that one could easily see inside all the rooms if the lights inside were switched on so no wonder I had this street light in my face the whole night. I tossed and turned the entire night, had an average breakfast and thanked God that I just had one meeting to go to and then on to a flight back to Johannesburg. On the upside, the pool looked like it would be nice on a hot Mozambiquan day but I am not looking forward to be being back. The language problem doesn't help either.
