My husband and I stayed here in October of 2013 after spending a week doing more active things around Peru (hiking, camping, white water rafting, etc.). I had picked Claro de Luna based on the many favorable reviews I read online, and it did not disappoint!

The hotel is located in Las Pocitas, which is a few km from downtown Mancora. It was actually really nice being a bit off the beaten path. The beach was pretty uninhabited, which I would imagine is not the case closer to town. I had read reviews about other hotels in the area, saying that there are rocks in the ocean that make it difficult to swim. This was not the case with Claro de Luna! The beach directly in front of the hotel was rock-free, which made it great for swimming and body surfing. The hotel provided chairs and cabanas on the beach.

The hotel itself was really charming. There were only a handful of rooms, which kept everything feeling really cozy. I liked the fact that the place wasn't swarming with other guests. The main lobby opened up into a shared living room, dining area, bar, and then... pool & beach. I loved the open floor plan of the main part of the hotel. It was so relaxing. The rooms were pretty simple and sparse, but they were clean, and who comes here to hang out in the room anyway? We had room #10, which was the only room with an ocean view. It was so relaxing to fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping up on the beach each night!

Before our trip, I was a little nervous about the weather since it was going to be the "off-season," but we had fantastic weather... loads of sun, wonderfully warm ocean water to swim in. The sun is STRONG! I came with a tan (and tan easily), and slathered on SPF 45 about 10x/day and STILL got a lot of sun. Be careful! Oh! It was also cool that we got to see whales migrating south on two of the three days we were there. Apparently September is the best month for this, but we lucked out and saw a few stragglers in mid-October :) The beach was very, very windy... not sure if that was a random thing, a seasonal thing, or if it's always like that. It wasn't terrible, but a few times we had to move back up to the pool area because the wind blew the sand around too much to tolerate.

What really made this hotel a winner was the owner and staff. The owner, Ricardo (although I think his son, Latauro, might be the "main" owner - he was away when we were there), was so, so nice and helpful. He was a very relaxed guy (I never saw him with shoes on), and very accommodating. The guys that work at the bar were very sweet and also very helpful. One guy - Rolando - was always smiling every time I saw him. My husband and I nicknamed him "smiley."

My only complaint about our stay here was that, since we were there during the off-season, the restaurant was closed except for breakfast. This was disappointing, as we were really looking forward to the convenience of an on-site restaurant (and had read really good things about the restaurant online!). It wasn't so bad walking to nearby restaurants, but it was annoying that they didn't even have snacks at all to enjoy with our poolside Pisco sours. I think they should at least have some chips & dip or something handy, but oh well. If having an on-site restaurant is important to you, I would recommend inquiring about theirs before booking.

Claro de Luna is a wonderful small hotel. We went to Mancora for a relaxing beach vacation, and that's exactly what we got. The hotel is set directly on their private beach, with ample shaded chairs for lounging. Their part of the beach has very few rocks, so it's a perfect place to go into the water -- the adjacent beaches on either side are a bit rocky. The rooms are very nice, clean, and comfortable. We had room 10, which has a view of the ocean and was great.

One of the most wonderful things about this hotel is the restaurant. While normally we would have explored the surrounding area a bit, I had food poisoning from somewhere in Lima, so we weren't really able to leave the hotel. As a result, we ate all of our meals at their restaurant. Normally I'm sure I would have found this irritating, but the food was really excellent. I am allergic to fish, but my boyfriend ate their fresh fish dishes each day and said that they were all fantastic. I had their chicken or steak dishes, which were all great. There were several specials each day to keep things interesting.

Finally, the hosts were very friendly and helpful. They are originally from Argentina, but have lived in Peru for many years. They speak great English, and took care of anything that we needed, including ordering antibiotics for me from the pharmacy.

In summary, a great experience, great hotel. Highly recommended if you want to go to the beach!

It's only my second night in the hotel and I haven't even checked out yet, but I feel compelled to write a review of this amazing place. I arrived around midnight after a 3.5 hour bus ride from Piura before hopping on a moto-taxi for a bumpy 10 minute ride to Claro de Luna. After passing through a security checkpoint, I arrived in Mancora Chico where the hotel is located. It was pitch dark when I arrived but a very helpful and friendly young man checked me in quickly, took my bag to my room and even brought a corkscrew to me so I could have a glass of wine from a bottle I bought before going to bed.

The next morning when I woke up, all I can say is WOW. The view of the ocean is spectacular, with the indoor/outdoor eating area giving you the option to eat at the pool or in the shade. Breakfast was great with fresh squeezed mango juice and a hearty portion of scrambled eggs, bread and all the coffee you can drink. The owner, Ricardo, personally welcomed me and made me feel welcome any time I saw him on the property.

In the afternoon, I took a stroll along the beach, which is perfect for sunbathing and swimming, with no rocks. You can walk toward Mancora center or the other direction, where there is a stretch of about 2-3 kilometers of beachfront to walk along, during which time I saw beautiful pelicans, lots of fish and tons of hermit crabs racing around. The ocean water was like swimming in a warm bathtub with incredible waves. The hotel pool was crystal clear and the perfect temperature. There was also a smaller pool (maybe a jacuzzi) on the property as well but I didn't use it.

For lunch, I had probably the freshest grilled tuna I've ever had that was marinated with a teriyaki sauce. During the afternoon, I had lovely conversations with Claudia, the co-owner and wife of Ricardo. At night, after returning from a dinner in Mancora, Ricardo and a friend were sitting enjoying a bottle of wine at the dining area and I joined them for a few beers, and had a very enjoyable conversation with them about the state of world affairs. The owners truly make you feel like you are family here.

Some other things to note are that there is wi-fi throughout the property, including at the pool and dining area. While you don't come to Mancora to surf the web, I had to work during the weekdays, and needed a strong internet connection, which I was pleased to have. The rooms have nice ceiling fans that keep you cool at night and the mattress was very comfortable, allowing me to get a good night sleep even with a bit of sunburn to cope with. A bonus is that there is DirectTV in the rooms so there's a good selection of programs to choose from.

All in all (and I am very opinionated as readers of my other reviews can see), I have nothing but praise for this establishment and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Mancora.

The last week of a three week trip around Peru we ventured north to Mancora. Looking for a place to stay we came across the Claro de Luna. What an absolute gem! Possibly the most welcoming place we've ever stayed in. We were looking for a relaxing last week and this was bliss. We highly recommend their Passion Fruit Pisco's and the best steaks in South America! This family run hotel is set against one of the best views in the Pacific. We saw whales from the bar coasting past which is a sight we'll never forget. We would like to go back one day and highly recommend it to others. Thanks to Lorento, family and staff for making our holiday very special.

Oh, if I could visit Claro de Luna every year, that would make me so happy. I stayed here for a week in September 2011 and it was so beautiful and peaceful I didn't want to leave! It's open and airy, but private and away from all of the mayhem of "downtown" Mancora. It's family-run and you do get the feeling that they genuinely care and they put so much of themselves into this hotel and it shows. You really do get first-class service here -- whether you need their help tracking down your lost luggage (true story), making you the best Pisco Sour in Peru or simply just bringing you a cold beer as your sunning by the pool -- it is truly paradise.

The rooms are simple, yet modern and very comfortable. The beds are extremely cozy and with the windows open you can hear the waves while you sleep - it is truly paradise. The bathrooms are great, but the only downside is I think they could improve the shower heads and have more pressure in the shower or even install a rain shower since that would go along with the design of the hotel, but maybe that is part of the plan as they are constantly adding new touches. But, the shower head isn't a negative... it's just the ONE thing that could be improved...

They had a taxi service pick me up from the airport in Piura and that was simple and easy and when I arrived at midnight someone was up to let me in and not only that, but a fresh sandwich and drink were waiting for me! The service really was first-class.

They have their own private beach section and it's so pristine and calm and you don't have the thumping of the music from the clubs in downtown Mancora. I stayed in downtown Mancora for my second week there and the noise from the bars at night really did wear me down after a while and it was unfortunate to have to sleep with the door closed to hide the club music because then I didn't get to hear the ocean waves that were so calming to hear at Claro de Luna.

It is about a 7-10 minute tuk tuk ride down a bumpy dirt road into Playa Las Pocitas to the hotel, but I found it fine and worth the trek. It's a bit far to walk, but tuk tuks go down the dirt road at all hours, so coming to/from the hotel is no problem. And, truthfully, you really don't want to leave the hotel too much except for here/there going to restaurants and maybe getting some shopping in, but I found I just wanted to stay at the hotel.

Also, walking along the beach of Playa Las Pocitas is so beautiful and it's safe - unlike the beach at night in downtown Mancora which is not safe at night.

If you are looking for a little paradise and zen on your vacation in Mancora, this is definitely a hotel that will not disappoint you and you definitely be sad to leave.

I just returned from a stay at Claro de Luna after finishing the Inca Trail. I was just looking for quiet, rest, and some quality beach time, and I got far more than that. My first communications with the hotel were answered quickly, and Lautaro was very helpful with offering payment options, arranging a taxi from the airport, and even offering to leave a sandwich and water on my patio since I would be arriving after the kitchen had closed.

My room was clean, bright, and comfortable, with ample hot water and even cable TV (although I never turned it on--who needs TV when the beach is a 2-minute walk out your door?). Although I didn't have one of the beach-facing rooms, I could hear the ocean waves from my room, and I had private patio area for reading, having a beer, or just hanging wet clothes out to dry.

Breakfast (which was included) was great, including fresh juice, eggs, coffee, bread, etc. But the other meals--lunch and dinner--were really wonderful. I love food and am the sort who usually likes to seek out local restaurants to try different things, but the food was so good here, and there were so many options on the menu, that I didn't even want to venture out. I stuck with the seafood side of the menu and loved everything I ordered (the ceviche was amazing), but there's an equally extensive list of burgers, homemade pizzas, fresh pastas, and so on. Since it is a small hotel, I talked with the other guests quite a bit, and not a single person reported ordering anything they didn't like. The drink selection was also good--Lautaro makes a mean pisco sour, and there are several local piscos to sample, as well as beer, wine, and a bar stocked with all the other basics you could possibly want.

But what makes this place really special is the atmosphere--the Belizan family is wonderful. They know all of their guests by name, stay very tuned into their guests' needs, and go out of their way to make the stay pleasant--but they're also respectful of your space and make an effort to stay out of your way unless they're needed. I've stayed in other small, family-run hotels, and this is the only one in my experience that has gotten the balance exactly right. I had plenty of quiet, alone time reading on the beach or having a beer and checking email on the pool deck with their free Wi-Fi, but I also loved talking with Ricardo, Claudia, and Lautaro. They're not just professional hotel proprietors--they're genuine, fun people whom I really enjoyed getting to know.

There are plenty of other hotel options in Las Pocitas with equally beautiful beach right outside their doors, perhaps more amenities and maybe fancier accommodations, but you won't find a hotel you'll feel more at home in than Claro de Luna. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Mancora after staying here.

Lautero and Ronaldo really made our stay special!Lautero's English is perfect and Ronaldo, the waiter, always had a smile on his face!
Breakfast is delicious, bread, jam, eggs, ham, juice tea and coffee all served in the poolside restaurant, great way to start your day!

We stayed 5 nights and both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Our room was clean, the bed was huge and comfortable, the shower had ample hot water, and the decor was beachy and fun. I very much enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the waves each night.

The common areas are also very nice. There are two small pools, beach chairs with umbrellas, and flowers everywhere. There is also a nice reading area with a shelf full of books and a movie area with an impressive collection of DVDs. A very friendly orange cat can be found lazing around ready for some petting and purring if you are so inclined.

We ate many meals in the hotel restaurant and the food was great and the menu offered enough variety to keep dining interesting for several nights.
The hotel is right on the beach and we found that though it was a bit of a walk we could walk to town along the beach. It made for a nice day trip and lunch out. You can also catch an inexpensive mototaxi if you prefer the easy route to town.

The owners and staff were all very friendly and helpful, they helped us arrange a whale watching trip and even had some coffee for us early in the morning before we left for the boat.

I will certainly stay here again if I find myself back in Mancora. It was a wonderful beachy get away and the perfect end to our extended Peruvian vacation.

When looking for a beach hotel in Mancora we read several reviews on Tripadvisor and selected Claro de Luna Hotel. It was rated very highly and seemed to be just what we were looking for - a high quality, small comfortable Hotel on the beach with friendly staff.
After spending a week it exceeded our expectations.
We loved the caring family that run the hotel, they went beyond of what we expected.
Food was excellent, they prepared all the well known seafood dishes of Peru and created some excellent recipes of their own. (Tuna Tatare is highly recommended and delicious)
The Hotel and the room were very clean.
The Hotel is small which made it very easy to get to know the owners as well as guests.
It was just outside of Mancora on a 6km stretch of beach, which made it easy to go into town but also enjoy peacefulness of the ocean.
From the Hotel we were able to see Humpback whales as well as Sea lions go by.
We would go back in a heartbeat!
Thank you Lautaro, Ricardo and Claudia!
