Great value for money! Very well equipped, hyper clean, lovely spacious cottages in the middle of a lushes beautiful green garden. Delicious breakfast is serviced in a tastefully, very nice decorated room. Mike and may go out of their way to accommodate all possible wishes. Mike is not just a great host, he is also a fabulous source of all kind of information and tips. Provides his guest immediately with a self made but very informative and useful map. We already dream to go back!

Secret garden with duck pond surrounded by jungle like garden. Cottages with thatched roofs and large rooms and bathrooms with high ceilings. Personally furnished with antique-like English furniture. All very clean and well maintained. The owner personally cares about the guests. Breakfast very professional. A couple of bottles for sale ( water, beer, wine) in the fridge would have have been nice - considering that the reception closes at 19:00.

Hi Schato, Thank you for the review Check-in is 14h00 to 18h00 but we are constantly on site and on arrival we asked if you had any problems or needs-just to come and knock and we showed the relevent enterance. If people don't take this offer and come and ask for water / other refreshments etc-we cannot read minds and cannot help So when we see you in the future-just come to the door and ask and we'll always help Cheers MiKe

Our second stay here, this time in a different room. Once again Mike & May were lovely friendly hosts - very knowledgeable about the area and helpful with various tips etc. The room was lovely with an excellent shower room, recently updated. There is a fridge in the room and air con. This is a lovely quiet area, with a good selection of restaurants.
Thanks Mike & May - again we enjoyed our stay in Montagu.

I had an excellent stay here. The room was spacious and had a lovely balcony facing their beautiful garden, so many flowers. The room I had was the elevated garden suite. Apart from the room being super comfy and big, Mike the owner was so kind, did an amazing breakfast and gave some great advice on places to visit. The area is safe with some great restaurants walking distance. Was looking everywhere to buy an adapter before I checked out but he gave me one for free. Thanks Mike for a wonderful stay and all your kind hospitality. See you again

I booked this accommodation several months ago directly with the owner and all seemed well.

We booked the large garden room for three nights, however, on arrival we realised it wasn't for us.

The room whilst huge and having a splendid balcony area was very tired to say the least.

The carpet and sofa had clearly seen a lot of wear and a lot of spilt food! The room despite its vast size appears claustrophobic largely due to the strange array of colours, various mis-match fabrics, clashing colours, dozens of pictures, rugs etc. The scary dolls in the book case and the1980s collection of books are bizarre to say the least.

The bathroom is also old other than the basins which look fairly contemporary. The tiles in the shower are old and yellowing, the red wooden bath soap dish has to be seen to be believed. The quality of the toiletries, towels and flannels were shamefully poor.

The bedroom is relatively small and just as badly decorated. The rugs and carpet were dirty and clearly hadn't been vacuumed in a while.

I always check the sheets and mattress when I arrive somewhere and I did that at Church Street. Regrettably, I didn't pull the sheets right down to the bottom - a mistake I'll never make again.

Everyone has different tastes and it clearly wasn't for us, so we asked to leave earlier than the three days we had booked. We would have left immediately but we felt we should stay one night out of politeness. Tastes are personal and we didn't want to offend.

After much discussion the owners decided we could leave after two nights and agreed they wouldn't charge us for the third night. They offered a different room but we were too fed up to move. It was dark and had no balcony.

We decided to make the best of it and started to plan our next day.

The following morning everything changed. When I got out of bed and flung the sheets back I realised to my abject horror that the sheets were soiled and clearly hadn't been changed from the previous guest. I was horrified. Some things are given regardless of everything else and sleeping in dirty sheets is repulsive.

Clearly, this doesn't happen as a rule - the outstanding reviews make that clear. The maid clearly forgot.

We really didn't know what to do - clearly the sheets needed to be changed. Despite being appalled we decided to stay as to move meant we wouldn't get to enjoy our day in the area as planned.

After breakfast (I was pleased to see there were gluten free products), I spoke to May privately, there was another couple present and I didn't want to embarrass her.

What happened next was awful and even now I am aghast at her response.

May told me I was lying and that the bed was clean. She called her maid who was questioned in front of us and of course she said she had changed the bed. May also claimed Mike had checked the sheets whilst on the bed – this was not confirmed by Mike.

CLEARLY SOMEONE MADE A MISTAKE. WE DID NOT SOIL THE BED. THE MAID WAS TOO SCARED TO SPEAK UP AS WAS MIKE. Given May’s violent temper I am not surprised.

Following this the maid was sent to inspect the sheet. Mike arrived and proceeded to tell us he 'always slept with his shorts on so as not to have any mistakes' it was surreal - the poor maid with her head down and Mike telling us about his sleeping habits.

What we had expected was a sincere apology and a speedy change of bedding. Instead May who by her own omission cannot get up the steps to look at this room (perhaps this is where the whole problem lies) screamed at us and told us to go.

It was hard to reason with her or have a civilised conversation - I think she thought we had either a) made it all up - the stains are such as to show they were there for some time and clearly not from our one night or b) that we were so keen to leave her guest house that we soiled the bed on purpose!!! At one points she shouted ‘my maid has been with me for ten years you expect me to believe you – she goes to church - I don’t know you – you expect me to believe you over my husband?’ Her outburst was like nothing I have ever seen before.

We paid and left; shaken and upset. We couldn’t believe she would speak to customers in such a way and put her maid in such a horrible position. Mike kept telling us he checked the sheets on the line and wanted to show us the laundry room – he seemed to miss the whole point of what had actually happened. Any reputable business would have had the integrity to accept a terrible mistake had been made, and use this as an opportunity to show how professional and hospitable they could be.

We packed up and left and found clean, luxurious accommodation around the corner.

We were really upset by this whole experience and I'm sure May will do her best to get this review taken off this site. In fact she claimed she had 'black listed us' on a local forum. It was the most awful experience - I had slept in someone else's mess and was now being bullied by the owner who was in self-denial (she refused to look at the sheets). What a nightmare.

I've written lots of reviews as you can tell from the dozens of posts I have submitted. Thankfully, none as long as this or as unpleasant.

I had to write this - travellers have to have a voice.
It was a mistake - they happen to everyone - dishonesty like this is shameful.

I’m happy to say that all the other accommodation we stayed at in South Africa was excellent and CLEAN.

Thank you for your defense of the indefensible When you raised the matter we were shocked as in 14 years we have never encountered anything like this…..Every room is inspected by myself and the corrections (if any) made before guests arrive, the linen from the previous usage was in ironing and the linen on the bed was newly laundered and pristine and when you got into the bed this pristine and clean linen was noted otherwise you would have raised a complaint at that time not after the bed had been in use for +/-8 hours In the morning we were accused of putting dirty linen on a bed with your wife crying “I’m not incontinent”…..The writer handled the matter by not accusing (which would have been correct but not customer friendly-so kept silent-this gentlemanly conduct was seen wrongly by yourself) You left our establishment and on further investigation the sheet was wet at the area of the stain at your wife’s side half way down the bed and it had gone through to the mattress protector, electric blanket and stained the mattress It took us 5 hot washes to get the sheet and mattress protector clean, the electric blanket has been scrapped and the mattress replaced…….and we are accused of putting on a dirty sheet after the expense which we incurred We note your review is the longest you have written and we therefore say……. "The lady doth protest too much, methinks" is a quotation from the 1602 play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. It has been used as a figure of speech, in various phrasings, to indicate that a person's overly frequent or vehement attempts to convince others of something have ironically helped to convince others that the opposite is true, by making the person look insincere and defensive. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Photos were taken of all the damage, but not posted (as we cannot add these on Trip Advisor) We will now be taking your false allegations to save on costly damages which we incurred to our legal representatives along with all our proof

We stayed one night in a patio room but wish that we could have stayed longer. The room was large and cosy and had everything that we needed. The bed was fantastic and bright and colourful. The gardens and bird life just added to the experience.
The host was lovely and helpful and had some good recommendations. Certainly Ye Olde Tavern down the road is worth visiting for a meal. The bobotie is fantastic.

May greeted us warmly and showed us a map of the town which she gave to us with points of interest and restaurants on.
May very kindly phoned and booked us a table at a restaurant very nearby, which proved to be excellent.
A friendly B & B, pleasant gardens, cars parked safely behind gates, able to leave car there while we walked around Montagu the next morning and went to the Easter fair May told us about.
Lovely breakfast in the courtyard served by Mike and May. All very friendly and very helpful.

We stopped at 7 Church street for 1 night during jan 07 while on a road trip but, having seen the accomodation, wished we stayed for a few days instead!
We had the garden suite, a huge apartment with a great balcony
overlooking their fabulous gardens. This may sound too good to be true but this place is just perfect for a short relaxing break. The
pool is lovely and the scenery was amazing. Never seen so many stars at night.
Most of all the hospitality was excellent. Anita made us feel right
at home from the first phone call, and made us feel very welcome at 7 Church St.
We travel often, staying in hotels, the idea of a guest house always seemed a bit restrictive to me, but I've changed my mind now. It's a great way to meet other people and find out local knowledge, nobody talks to you in a hotel.
If you are thinking of going for the hot springs, give it a miss as
it's always packed, stay here instead. Templetons restaurant just
around the corner was fantastic also.

Very friendly owner who showed us our room for a 1 night stay. Room was nice and everything we could possibly need was there. We expected more luxury for the price we paid and a 4 star guest house. Coming back after dinner it was very dark.
Door of our room didn’t close properly and old bad lock! Therefore we didn’t feel very safe. A bit of heating in the bathroom on this cold morning would have been a plus. Not much choice for breakfast but we had a very good fruit salad and fried eggs.
No heating in the bathroom on this cold morning.

Hi FranceMartine Thank you for taking the time to do a review. On lighting we have extended our outside lights-We provide guests with a minimum of 2 torches in case of Load Shedding for use on their way from restaurants and in our property. We will check all our doors and we would like to thank you for the notification. Breakfast is fruit, muffins, eggs, bacon and other accompaniments (tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, beans) We always ask guests if there is anything else they want? and we'll do our best -some want cheeses, some want egg white omelettes-If they ask we like to assist....We are however only a Bed and Breakfast which does everything fresh each day and wider choices can be obtained at 5* hotels where they have a buffet Thank you again MiKe
