Kingna Lodge is a stunningly decorated Victorian home on the main street of Montagu. Each room had its own charming bathroom and period furniture. The room has a heater and extra blanket, which is needed in autumn as it gets nippy in the evenings, plus the bed has a top sheet, always a nice touch. Loadshedding means no power but the rooms have long-life bulbs and the oil lamps in the hallway bring back the glory days of this magnificent house. John is an excellent host and will organise your evening dinner bookings – highly recommend the Montagu Country Hotel and The Victorian for dinner and the Rambling Rose for breakfast. If you ask John, he will give you a tour of the private rooms in the house and the history, including Nelson Mandela’s visit. Have a G&T in the bar or sit on the veranda and watch the sunset reflected off the mountains. John is an excellent host who sorts out little problems immediately

We stayed at this guesthouse for the second time, and again, it was fantastic. The building, loaded with history and memorabilia is worth being seen. To sleep in the room, where the former president of South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela, stayed, has been a great experience.
The house has also modern amenities as a secluded pool.
Last to mention is the host, John, who cares in every respect for his guests, beginning with a very warm welcome, advices for tours, recommendations and reservations for dinner, to the farewell.
If we visit Cape Town next time, we deliberately will make a visit to Montague and Kingna Lodge.

Lovely place on a quiet street close to a nice Pizzeria! A very accommodating host John welcomed us and had a sundowner with us. Parking was covered and inside the property. We would definitely recommend Kingna Lodge!

We arrived at the lodge at 15:30. There was nobody to receive us. We paid in advance, but nobody told us that our reservation was canceled. We found out from a neighbour that the owner had a heartattack and was in intensive care in hospital. Later tourist information phoned him and had quite a long conversation with him (in intensive care?)
My question is: does the whole business rely on the owner or does the business close without warning if the owner falls ill?

Best historical place and accomodation we ever where. Stunning hospitality by John. Sitting outside at the Veranda discussing things with a beer into the night....a good bar inside....we felt at home. Thanks very much, John! We loved staying with you!

the previous reviewer is 100% right about Kingna Lodge being not a nice place at all.
We have had the worst stay ever there. Indeed the pool is so dirty that you cannot use it, imagine this at the hottest time of the year.
We didn't have dinner there, but after speaking to some other guests who were there for 2 nights, one shouldn't eat there at all.
You would be better off with a bottle of wine and a bag of crisps from the supermarket.
I am very disappointed with Portfolio Collection as they rate this property as Comfortable, to us it was not even standard.

We were disapointed with this place. We expected it to be the best place we stayed in SA based on reviews, but it was far from this.

Building is lovely old period and room nice old furniture that suits the building, so initially looked great, but no a/c just an small and old fan that made such noise we could not keep it on over night and as our room faced out to front of buliding, we couldn't open the windows so it was really stuffy and hard to sleep in.

The pool was really dirty - you could not get into it - and the area all around it was not great either and could really do with some work on it - which was quite surprising given it was billed as nicest place in town.

Check out was 10.30 and we were just ready to go check out just before the 10.30 deadline when the manager knocked to make sure we were going to be out bang on time, which left a sour feeling that we were being rushed out of there.

This was one of the few places we stayed in SA we would not return to.
