Avalon Springs has recently undergone a major refurbishment of all the pools and the bar. Guests and Day Visitors are welcome.

This project started in May 2022 and was supposed to be completed in December 2022, however there are still a few outstanding issues which are being completed by the various contractors.

The Day Visitor supertube slide has been working well for the past six months, however, the one on the resident's side will only be complete shortly!

All the pools have been completed and are still naturally filled by spring water which bubbles to the surface at around 41.5 degrees in winter. Pool temperatures range between 29°C and 36.5°C, providing ample choice for bathers depending on how warm or cool they want to go. Visitors have flocked to this area for decades to soak away stress and soothe their aches and ailments in the water from this ‘miracle spring’

This magnificent resort, situated approx 200 Kms from Cape Town is nestled in the foothills of the surrounding Cogman's Kloof. The resort offers a range of self-catering and hotel accommodation.

I am generally not keen to stay at Resorts, but this one really surprised me! First: the friendly staff. I have often visited places where the staff are friendly, but usually, you get the feeling that they were instructed to be nice to guests. Here it was not so. You picked up an atmosphere of joy and happiness with all staff all the time. This really made our stay so much more pleasant. Second: the facilities. So clean and spotless. What made this more amazing is that they just reopened after a devastating flood, and you can not see a trace of evidence of it. Finally the rates were more than fair for the good standards we experienced. Highly recommended!!!!

The attention to detail and absolute focus on guest needs are amazing! It is truly out of this world. A little miracle with nature's beauty, trail path to the cave in the mountain, absolute perfect pool temperatures (all pools different temperatures, so you will find one that is perfect for you), and amazing staff. Truly amazing, would definitely come back again, and would encourage anyone to go!

Thank you for posting a review following your recent visit to Cogman's Restaurant. This was certainly an isolated incident however I have spoken to the kitchen and restaurant staff accordingly, to ensure that someting similar may be prevented in the future. It would be greatly appreciated if you send your contact details to gm@avalonsprings.co.za, so that I may contact you personally as I would love to make this up to you. In the meantime, please accept my sincerest apologies for this most unfortunate experience. Kind regards

This was the best family retreat ever! Only two hours drive from Cape Town. Since the moment we arrived at Avalon Springs we received the warmest of warm welcomes. It was obvious to all of us that the Team at the Hotel enjoy their jobs. As we entered our very comfortable rooms our holiday started. We could not get into our swimming costumes quick enough. It was freezing cold outside and we chose to relax in the outside swimming pool with only our noses sticking out. Laughing and Talking nonstop. We were a group of 8 family members with the 78year old taking the lead. Dinner was a treat. Stunning menu choices and extremely well priced. Not one complaint over two evenings with 16 meals between our group. Breakfast was just as good. They catered for so many people with such a stunning variety of healthy as well as our favourite - fatty foods! As a family retreat, I cannot imagine a better venue. We were 3 generations together having fun until 22h30 in the outside pool. The inside pool area is just as nice, however we preferred outside. I would like to add that the youngsters (15, 17 & 26 years were hardly on their cell phones. That they mainly used to take photo's of the beautiful surroundings. This family will definitely be back.....THANK YOU.......

We planned a family getaway to Avalon Springs in June. Wow, we haven't been for a while so it was the first time we experienced the renovations done recently. The checkin and checkout process was as smooth and enjoyable as the cocktails served pool side. We were a group of 8 people and ate at the restaurant every night, food was great, well presented and really good value for money. The staff was on it and everyone got served hot meals at the same time, great for a chilli June winters evening. The pool facilities are world class, love the larger, elongated naturally heated pool, was great to hang around in and really be able to be have fun conversations with the family even if its in a public space. The kids loved the other pools and went on a hike to the grotto for the first time. What a Wonderfull weekend, felt like a weeks holiday crammed into a weekend, pretty sure the Natural Spring water has special healing powers.... LOL!

Thank you so much for taking the time to post such an amazing review, following your recent stay at Avalon Springs! It is always extremely rewarding to hear that a guest has so thoroughly enjoyed their stay with us and I am so glad that we were able to make your stay with us a memorable one. Your kind comments regarding the quality and presentation of the food in the restaurant, and in particular regarding the attentative staff, are greatly appreciated. With regards to the new pools, your wonderful comments are truly meaningful, as some returning guests are not easily open to accept change. The hot spring waters do purportedly have healing powers! Perhaps it is the high mineral content, or the natural heat of the water, or the idyllic setting? Or, maybe just a combination of them all! We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we can’t wait to welcome you back in the near future. Once again, thank you for your comments, as it is only through feedback from our valued guests such as yourselves that we can monitor our performance and improve our service

Dear Gavin Hathers, My elderly parents and I made a day trip yesterday as day visitors and elected to stay outside Avalon springs . I was disappointed at the false advertising of “hot springs” . 3 other unrelated families all presented to the office ti complain about the Luke warm pools. There was only one that was barely ok to get into due to the cold temperatures. We were instructed to (by ourselves) call maintenance. They arrived and said there’s nothing they can do. The office ladies said that since the new renervations everyone is complaining about the pool temperatures. I went to the hotel side to feel the temperature there and it was amazing! I feel that it is false advertising and you should correct your website to show clear differences in terms of what to expect. My parents could barely tolerate the cold and we left. I will be escalating this matter to consumer protection as even your own staff and from what I can judge - the previous posts reflect exactly the same. I don’t think it’s right to discriminate re how day visitors vs hotel guests are received. I even asked the front desk if I could pay for a night stay just to use the pools but given it was for 3 people this was not possible. I am still in Montague today and would appreciate if you would assist. I also had an extremely rude male person who gave me your details - incorrectly written and even declined to give me his name despite me asking for it multiple times. The customer service and people management skills of Avalon Springs is by far the worst we have ever experienced. 1. We booked a four night stay (17 to 21 April 2023), in the mountain chalets with its own private jacuzzi. Three of the nights the jacuzzi was not working (with boiling hot water), even after reporting the problem to the staff. 2. We specifically booked and paid for a chalet for six (6) adults, and received two bedrooms, for four adults. We were then forced to place and share a space for two adults on one single bed in one of the rooms and sleep very uncomfortably. The sleeper couch, which is clearly for the use of a small child, was provided for the other two adults. This sleeper couch does not even cover the legs of a teenager and the 1.75 meter long adult had to sleep on a couch that is not even 1 meter in length. The chalet next to us had no visitors for our entire stay, yet, the management could not think of providing an extra bed, even in the living area, just to provide some sort of comfort. 3. Prior to checking in, we raised our concerns with the reservations manager, who instead of prividing a solution to the problem, gave us an attitude and refused to cater to any need. 4. Upon check out we requested to speak to the general manager, Mr. Gavin Hatherley, who was on site on the day, but like a coward avoided speaking us, and has to date not responded to a single email. Furthermore, we have had contact with the reservations manager, Debbie Nel, and the front desk manager on the day. None could assist or provide any solutions to any problem. It is clear that absolutely NO ACCOUNTABILITY is taken from management at this resort, and judging by the trail of bad reviews on Trip Advisor, they do not care about customer service or comfort. I would never recommend this resort to anyone!

Response from G Hathers, General Manager at Avalon Springs
Responded 01 May 2023
Dear Ms Kermis Thank you for your response to my email, the contents of which are repeated below: Thank you so much putting into writing your experiences following your recent stay at Avalon Springs. Once again, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding however I have been perusing the correspondence between yourself and our offices and have also interviewed various members of my staff and management. On 3 January you originally made a reservation with Riaan for 10 persons and booked 2 mountain chalets. He emailed you the provisional booking document as well as the Accommodation Guide that gives you a full description of the layout of the chalets, which states very clearly that they each have 2 bedrooms with a sleeper couch in the lounge, suitable for 2 children under 12. On 12 January you sent us an email reducing the number of chalets from two to one and reducing the number of guests from 10 persons to 6 persons only. The changes were made, and the new provisional booking document was forwarded, again including the terms and conditions which gives a full description on the chalets. On 27 February when we received your final payment, we again sent the terms and conditions document with your final invoice. Nowhere in any of the correspondence did you state that you were looking for a unit with 6 separate beds anywhere or you would have been informed that we do not have any units with that configuration. On Friday 14th April we offered you an extra hotel bedroom at a greatly reduced price of 500.00 per night for two of the adults. It was explained that they could still join your group in the chalet during the day but would just use the hotel room to sleep in. You were also advised that you could use the chalet as is or you could request a refund. You responded by saying that “ we would have to continue with the booking as is, with 2 adults sleeping on a sleeper couch for children under 12.” You and your party arrived and booked in at approximately 16:26 on Tuesday 17th April. The evening before you checked out, (two days after you checked in), you wrote to advise that “the space is NOT EFFICIENT for two (2) adults on the sleeper couch” and that “the sleeper couch provided for these adults who paid full adult price, was not even efficient for one adult”. (Please note that the rate for the Chalet is for the chalet, irrespective of the number of occupants – even if it is six adults). You also requested us to please extend our stay with one night (I assume you wanted it for free…., or at least at the R500 we had offered for the hotel room?), to check out date on 22 April 2023. You also attached a photo of the half-opened sleeper couch, which you tried to make up. At no stage during your entire stay did you request Housekeeping to make up the couch….. (Unfortunatley, I cannot post the picture of how a sleeper couch looks when we make it up, but it is certainly suitable and comfortable for 2 children under 12 (or 2 adults?). With regards to the jacuzzi, they are all set to run between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius but despite them all being set to the same parameters, on any given day we will have almost an equal number of guests requesting the temperature to be turned up as to those who require it to be turned down. Some even want it turned off completely. Usually, a call from the guest to reception would result in one of the maintenance technicians being sent immediately to the chalet to adjust the temperature to suit the guest’s needs. Theo, our on-site electrician, had a long chat to the man occupying the jacuzzi, discussing the pros and cons of various types of elements and they seemed to be very happy. There were no other recorded requests regarding the jacuzzi. With regards to your comment about my “cowardly behaviour”, I was actually in a previously arranged meeting with other guests from which I could not excuse myself and asked Valda if she would apologise and listen to you on my behalf. I am not in the habit of running away from or avoiding complaining guests, but rather enjoy listening to them so that we can get a better understanding of what possibly could have gone wrong to create any unhappiness to ensure that future guests are not inconvenienced. I was on the property for the entire duration of your stay; however I received no indication from either yourself nor any of my team that you were in any way dissatisfied by the accommodation or service that you received. It is indeed a great pity that you did not bring any of these matters to the attention of either myself or one of my management team on your first day of your stay, not only so that we may have met personally but so that we could have had the opportunity to discuss and resolve any issues while you were still on site. I am extremely disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay, especially as you had previously commented on the friendly and efficient staff after your stay in January 2020, but I would once again like to thank you for your comments as it is only through feedback and constructive criticism from our guests that we can monitor our performance and improve our service.

Was so looking forward to our trip there, after having experienced the pools before. What a disappointment to find everything has changed, smaller pools, not as hot as it should b. Why do people change what's not broke, yes upgrade a bit, fix what needs to be fixed , but to have change all the pools etc ...how sad. Even the guests half is just long squiggly small pools. Definitely won't be back again . Very disappointed.

Thank you so much putting into writing your experiences following your recent stay at Avalon Springs. Whilst it is rewarding to hear when the guest has enjoyed their stay, we also take our guest feedback extremely seriously. The refurbishment of the entire pool area started in May 2021 and has been widely advertised, especially as we had to close to day visitors for almost ten months. With the new layout of the pools and surrounds, we have increased our resident guest’s area by 300% and they now have around 1,800 square meters of exclusive use, with five hot pools, plus their own supertube! The water is still coming from the hot spring eye at above 41 degrees and we measure the temperature of the pools at various times during the day. We are now able to adjust the flow of hot water into the various pools, so that different pools are at different temperatures, and they fluctuate between 29 and 36.5 degrees, depending on the ambient temperature of the surrounding air. This way, there is always a pool at the right temperature to suit (almost!) everyone. The previous Island Pool, almost 1.9 meters deep, was too deep for most people to even stand, and was a safety concern for younger children. The depth of the pools was reduced to an average of 1.3 metres deep in most pools (although there are some areas at 1 meter and some at 1.4 meters). The majority of guests were (and are) happy to “wallow” around in the pools, with their feet dragging on the bottom. We also had to factor in using the same volume of water whilst increasing the surface area of the new pools to create additional pools for residents and day visitors alike. I am extremely disappointed that the resort could not match your expectations, especially as we have received some amazing feedback from our guests. I would, however, like to thank you for your comments, as it is only through feedback and constructive criticism from our guests that we can monitor our performance and improve our service.

Avalon springs is an amazing resort to stay at, be it the hotel or the mountain chalets. If you would like to have a good family holiday getaway, we would recommend avalon springs. However, we had a bit of a bad experience with the pool, we understand SOME parts were still under construction, but the floor of the kiddie pools and one of the pool was not smooth, it's a rough surface where our little ones actually got hurt and scrapped her foot we had to take her to the medic to get it looked at, even us adults couldn't stand the feeling of it and it was off putting to have that feeling in the pool. I really hope they get that sorted soon!

Thank you so much for posting a review and for putting into writing your experiences following your recent stay at Avalon Springs. Whilst it is rewarding to hear when the guest has enjoyed their stay, and we really appreciate your positive feedback, we also take our guest feedback extremely seriously and it was with concern that I read your comments regarding the rough surface of some of the pool floors. The architects and the pool contractor were both very concerned that the sloping ‘beach ramp” entrances into some of the pools would be extremely slippery, particularly when the fibreglass was still new, and decided to mixed silica sand into the final paint mix which was applied to the fibreglass, to prevent slipping. We realise that at the moment it is rather rough, but have been assured by the contractor that this will become smoother over time, as it wears. We will be draining some of the pools next week, to attend to any defects and will take a serious look at the ramps once the pools have been drained. I would like to offer my sincere apologies for any inconvenience which you and your family may have experienced and hope that your next visit to Avalon Springs will be a more memorable and enjoyable stay. Once again, thank you for your comments, as it is only through feedback and constructive criticism from our valued guests such as yourselves that we can monitor our performance and improve our service.

The service and care I and my family received at Avalon Springs Hotel & Resort from 28 Oct - 30 Oct 2023 (I booked 2 Garden Suites) was Excellent. I took my entire family on a mini vacation this past weekend to celebrate my Husband's Birthday (Saturday, 29 Oct 2022) and I wanted it to be relaxing and perfect . Avalon Springs Hotel & Resort staff did not disappoint at all. From the reception staff, the lovely lady handing out the welcome drinks and sweeties and popcorn for the kids, the staff in Cogmans Restaurant, the counter staff at the Pool side Cafe, as well as the housekeeping lady, were the most polite and lovely people, we felt like it was a home away from home, we were treated with such respect and friendliness, it was really a lovely treat being at this hotel. Even though there is construction happening, we still enjoyed our stay and did not feel in the least bit inconvenienced, the pools were amazing. Every staff member with whom we came in contact with, was attentive and kind. We have already decided to return to Avalon Springs for our family Easter 2023 Long Weekend and look forward to enjoying the new pools and amenities once construction is completed. We had a wonderful mini vacation, such awesome value for money, and I will not hesitate to recommend Avalon Springs Hotel & Resort to all of my colleagues, friends and family. Thank you again for such outstanding service.
