Stayed one night at this charming boutique hotel, in a very large, comfortable room with vaulted ceilings, king size bed, large bathroom with separate tub and shower, and A/C. The hotel is centrally located within walking distance of shops/restaurants. The garden is lush and has a nice pool available 24/7. Pool towels are provided. A nice English breakfast was included. 4-course dinner and wine pairing can be added on for an extra price, although we elected to walk the small town and eat at a restaurant. If you do the same, be sure to make reservations ahead of your visit, as it seems that some restaurants get filled ahead of time.

This is our 5th visit to this great lodge in the charming town of Montagu. This time we were the first guests to stay in the new room created out of the old conference room. It was huge with direct access to the garden but very private. Feda's very stylish decor and furnishing, period meets contemporary and a great red bath! Since our last visit there had been some further alterations to the property, a new bar being created next to the pool area instead of at the front of the building and that area was now a high end gift shop and cafe. One of the highlights of Mimosa Lodge is the food - set menu fine dining, although if there are items on the menu not to your taste they will happily change it. The current chef is Zimbabwean and he's been trained by Bernard and many of the staff have been there almost since the start. As for things to do in and around the town. There are the fabulous hsitorical buildings - there is a walking plan available, back through Ashton a picnic on the Breed River and in the other direction a great ride up the mountain on a 50 year old tractor, usually on a Saturday and Wednesday on the Protea Fruit Farm, great fun.

Very good, clean accommodation in a great location. However, a few issues need addressing, namely: Lighting in the entire unit, except the kitchen, is very poor. There were side lamps, but the plugs didn't fit the wall sockets. TV in the lounge needs to be upgraded - it's the only TV in the unit. Throughout our stay nobody came to our unit at all. We had to make a plan to remove our dirt bags. The dirt bin in the kitchen was so small, we could hardly fit anything in it. Crockery & cutlery needs checking - only 4 teaspoons for an 8 sleeper unit!!!!!!! These are small but important issues.

The lodge provides beautiful accommodations, where history seamlessly collides with modern conveniences and décor in a stylish yet understated manner. We enjoyed our room and were in want of nothing.
The staff are however your highlight. We were warmly greeted by the radiant smile of Bisa (spelling) despite her not feeling too well, I believe. The rest of the team took very good care of us as well and made us feel at home in your little piece of heaven – Jodene, Jessica, Carmen and Roman???(I forget his name – the duty manager on Sunday??) Their service during dinner was also top-notch.
Then, to Chef Bernhard, all I can say is WOW!! I enjoy a good steak when dining out, but everything I’ve tasted prior to Sunday evening pales in comparison. Firstly, the presentation and the carving of the steak at our table was a first for us and made the meal all the more special. My mind was blown with every bite of the perfectly grilled steak. Our side dishes were excellent too – onion rings and fried chips are taken to new heights in your kitchen.
The portion sizes at your restaurant are very generous and surpass expectations. Needless to say, we rolled out of the restaurant, feeling satisfied and happy that we got to experience The Grill Room.
We had a wonderful stay. I cannot wait to incorporate Mimosa Lodge and The Grill Room into my next trip design. I want the world to experience the joy of Karoo hospitality. Your team are true ambassadors for tourism in SA and should be given credit for this.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts

Although this is an old hotel (that probably needs a bit of an upgrade) it is still a very nice place to stay. The location is good, close to several restaurants and right across from the Route 62 Brewery (on a hot day, enjoy a refreshing beer at the back of the brewery) and has it's own restaurant which serves great food. Breakfast was also very good, service was quite fast and the staff very helpful. The only downside to the stay was load shedding which was not the establishments fault but the room got quite hot. Recommended for the traveller - it also has a very nice pool at the rear which on a hot day is most welcome.

My husband and I did a bike trip up to Barrydale for the long weekend in September. Coming home on the Monday, we got caught in the worst storm to hit the Western Cape in the last 100 years! We made it into Montague and made the decision to rather stay over that night, as it was just too dangerous to continue on the bike. We were lucky enough to find accommodation at the Mimosa Lodge. Our entire experience there, from my initial call, to the warm personal welcome we got on arrival (despite leaving a pool of water behind in reception because we were so wet!), to the hospitality shown in the restaurant that evening and again the next morning at breakfast was amazing. The employees were working under extremely difficult conditions. It was the end of a long weekend, so people were on their way home, but because of the storm, there were so many people who ended up stranded, literally sleeping in their cars because all the churches and school halls were full. I watched the staff show compassion and kindness to so many people who came in begging to be allowed to get something to eat for their families, as most of the places in town were closed. Their staff did an outstanding job in trying to accommodate everyone as best as they could and ensure we all had a good evening. In fact, their receptionist wasn't able to get home, so they put her up in a room for the night and, in return, she worked another late shift helping out her colleagues, which shows you the kind of dedication their staff have to making your stay the best one it can possibly be. Our steaks were divine and the service was too. Our room had a carafe of complimentary sherry and fruit waiting to warm us up, the bed was big enough for a family and the views are beautiful. The next morning I was greeted with a huge smile and a hug from the very same Manager who had been on duty the night before and he went out of his way to keep everyone updated as to when roads out of Montague were being re-opened and the safest way to travel back to Cape Town. What could have been an extremely unpleasant situation turned out to be absolutely wonderful, mostly because of the staff - they truly represent the warmth and hospitality of the South African people. I would love to go back there again!

Mimosa Lodge was all I remembered from my last visit in the 80's! A new modern restaurant, but same warm welcome (down to the muscadel served in the room) and lovely spacious rooms.

After our long drive, we were given a pamphlet and encouraged to take an evening walk before dinner between rain showers and enjoyed safely seeing the beautiful historical buildings in the area

Service at dinner was personal and good. No gluten free bread available at dinner was rectified by the following morning. I highly recommend the fillet steak.

We stayed a couple of nights here and the place does live up to it’s heritage marketing. The only thing is, it makes it a bit noisy. We stayed in the rooms over the road from the main hotel and the floors are wooden floor boards, the walls are plaster and the doors to the rooms are a loose fit in the frames which makes for a lot of echo around the place when people chat in the lobby.

The rooms themselves are OK , clean and a very comfortable bed. Bathrooms are clean and large. We found the food there OK but nothing special, it was the only place in our 18 days in South Africa where I didn’t bother with a cooked breakfast on our second day. Maybe it’s a different chef on a Sunday evening and at breakfast because lots of people have said how good the food is. The first night we ate at Route 62 opposite the hotel and enjoyed ourselves there, local beer and reasonable food.

Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful.

Four years ago my son and I were visiting the Mimosa Lodge restaurant and found it such a good experience that - this time with my douchter and her family - I came back and had also the opportunity to book in the Lodge itself. Still the same spendid experience. Perfect stay and superior chef.
