Everyone that sets foot over the 165 year old thresholds have been so deeply touched that it became evident that these historical homes are truly a place meant to be shared with the world. These old homes come to life when filled with the smell of bread from the oven at dawn, the sound of laughter in the high ceiling rooms, farm kitchens brimming with garden produce and candles lit at night. The houses inhale when shutters are opened every morning and, when millions of stars light our dark Karoo sky, it breathes the perfume of cool night air. This makes the concept of modern air conditioning an intrusion to the magic of living in the Karoo. Spaces are filled with objects, furniture and art that transcends the concept of time. The prehistoric to the contemporary lives together in a gentle way within the thick lime plastered walls and old wooden floors with underfloor heating to keep the winter chill away. Television is not missed here either and makes way for a late night swim in the farm dam. Or in winter, when white capped mountains enfold this picturesque Karoo town, the sound of a roaring fire and glass of home-made orange brandy marks the end of another day in Africa. For summer, there is cool linen on four poster beds and in winter, cashmere to keep the chill away. The breakfast tables celebrates produce from the area and organic eggs from the happy hens that roam the garden. We fill breakfast glasses with freshly pressed citrus, grown in large terracotta pots in the citrus garden. There are no chocolates on bed pillows, no formal reception and no crowds of people. There is only beauty and simplicity. We focus on the quality of everyday life and want for every moment to become a cherished memory until your return. For us, as for guests, these are our homes.

Jonkmanshof is a first rate guest house -- intimate with great attention to detail. We appreciated the linen sheets, the magnificent bathrooms, the lovely garden and little touches like complimentary snacks. Mercifully, we did not see a television anywhere in either house, so it is a good getaway! Delicious breakfasts were served family style around a communal table, which made for some interesting conversation though this arrangement might not be as successful if you were looking for more privacy. The location in the centre of Montagu is great for exploring the village on foot. Hein is a very personable and helpful host, and a visit to the shop, Nagmaal, is a must.

Hein and his team run a top notch guesthouse which is beautifully put together. Welcoming and professional service. Well appointed rooms and stylish interiors with very high quality linens, comfy beds and bathoom products. Breakfast served in the most beautiful conservatory and kitchen space - - this is one of the best Cape guest-house stays ever!

Our impulsive decision to spend a weekend away from the city, became two days to treasure forever.
We returned back to normal city life, feeling revived and refreshed, due to the calmness, efficiency and the beauty found at Jonkmanshof.
To Hein and Brydon, you have managed to present a haven for your guests, unobtrusive and with so much care.

Jonkmanshof, nestled in the small Karoo town of Montagu, consists of two meticulously restored nineteenth-century traditional Cape cottages.
Our host Brydon, who welcomed us on arrival, took great pride in showed us around the cottage which has two independent rooms with a communal kitchen and lounge with a bountiful fireplace. A manicured farm garden with a small terrace and swimming pool adds to its immense charm.

Jonkmanshof, clearly exudes an almost tangible passion, and one can only describe it as a true labour of love. Every detail has been painstakingly attended to by Hein and his team from the finest linen to the superb collection of body products in the bathroom. Even the books in the library have been thoughtfully chosen.

Our farm breakfast was served in the main cottage and was prepared as per our order. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner on the Saturday evening, which is optional. Our chef de partie, Hans, formerly the chef at Hemelhuijs, speaks volumes of the beautifully plated superb cuisine which we so thoroughly enjoyed.
My wife and I will definitely return early next year.

We discovered this very special B&B through a Sunday Times UK article on Route 62.We had been numerous times to SA and wanted to break away from Capetown Hermanus Franschoek triangle.and here was our opportunity. We chose to spend eight nights here and not only explore the area but relax in such sumptuous surroundings. It is a Manor House Dutch Gable style, one of oldest buildings in Montagu (1874).The interior has not been spared of the finest art and artefacts contemporary as well as traditional and furnishings to match the historic nature of the house.Other interesting aspects are a conservatory with a large collection of cacti and a parterre garden with 40 different varieties of citrus fruit. The swimming pool is raised above the ground as primarily a plunge pool.
We were greeted by the 'effervescent' Brydon professional welcoming engaging and informative who was "Mr Gourmet breakfast" but notwithstanding the proprietor Hein equally hands on.
We were able to indulge in an in-house dinner with Hans whose culinary skills were on display and commended.
As far as room was concerned and most importantly the mattress pillows and bed linen were of highest quality as were the toiletries
Thanks once again for a memorable stay

This was an overnight stay on our way to Franschhoek but wished we had booked more nights. What a hidden gem this place is. We stayed in 20 Bath Street which has two rooms and a further two rooms are provided in 30 Bath Street. The guest house is beautifully decorated with a variety of art, artefacts, books and furniture. This represents a lifetime of collecting for the owner and what a fantastic result. We were welcomed by Hein and shown to our large room with relaxing views of the citrus tree garden and pool. The bed was large and had the best linen I have ever slept in - apparently imported from Italy and made into sheets locally. The honesty bar was delightful. We had dinner at 22 Church Street which was also superb and very affordable. The whole experience was totally unexpected but excellent from arrival to departure.

This has to be one of the most beautiful places to stay in the countryside... the hosts are friendly and welcoming, and this 1800s townhouse has been gorgeously furnished in keeping with the period, in the most authentic way. A delicious breakfast was served in the old and very beautiful kitchen .... we loved it here.. Jonkmanshof is a real gem!

Jonkmanshof reads like a storybook from the wooden floors to the Cape Dutch gables. The owners have curated this special place with a respect for history, a flair for fabrics and colors and a collector's eye. Our experience was that Jonkmanshof is devoted to excellence in hospitality, food, wine and relaxation. You have to visit to live the story!

Incredible two night staycation for our honeymoon. Situated in the best part of Montagu this historical guesthouse is one of the best we have stayed at anywhere. The original building was built in 1850 and renovated recently. Cool and airy inside it is tastefully decorated with interesting antiques and artifacts. Garden is also amazing with fruit trees and it’s own chicken coop. The pool is a brilliant farm style pool which is heated naturally by the sun in the daytime. Brilliant toiletries, fluffy towels, strong shower. Room kept cool with a fan. Brekfast was home made in the farm kitchen and really incredible. Thank you to Bryson for looking after such well. We will be back !

Jonkmanshof is one of those places that is so good that you promise yourself you'll keep it a secret so there's availability when you next want to return, but immediately find yourself breaking that promise because it's incredible. Has to be one of the most beautifully designed properties in the world, a masterpiece of interior design where you can intensely feel the passion that has been put into every inch of the house. Hein is a brilliant host and makes you feel very welcome and seems genuinely happy to answer questions about the interiors that he must have been asked a thousand times. 10/10 100/100 - top tip - both rooms are beautiful but stay in the slightly more expensive one.
