Kviknes has a wonderful old building which looks well kept and the view from the sea is great! BUT you most probably do not stay in the beautiful building, cause they have built a new horrendously ugly "new" building in 1965. We had a big room, but you simply can not like this hotel building. Staircase, lifts, corridors and rooms are not up to standards. Book in the historic building or stay somewhere else. We had a tasty delicious dinner in the restaurant and the COVID-19 routines worked well for dinner. Breakfast was though with a buffet and that did not feel well thought through. All guests pick food with the same fork from totally open trays. No, not a really good feeling for the breakfast. I had higher expectations to this place. Nicer to look at from the sea than stay in. And why could there not be more Norwegian speaking youth working in such a place in the summer?

I stayed 3 nights in the historic section, and very much enjoyed relaxing on a corner room's front and side balconies. Comfortable single twin bed in a very clean suite, with views of the front yard and fjord, and ferry a 1-minute walk away. Tiled bathroom with a controllable heated floor had the usual mini soap, shampoo, conditioner. Stand-alone tub with hand-held shower but nothing on the wall to hold it up. Room was quiet except when the people next door were loud. Historic pictures decorating the hallways were interesting to view, like staying in museum. I enjoyed looking at and reading them all. I didn't go into the 'new' addition on the back. Many hot & cold breakfast buffet selections in a large dining room catering to large tour groups. Tables in the nooks edging the room are quieter and have better views. I enjoyed the warm croissants. The intention is good, but I'm afraid quality suffered a bit (hot food cools off) having to serve so many people within the meal time. As I don't eat much, I didn't go to the dinner buffet, but had small meals in the local eateries. 4 stars instead of 5 for the small (yet probably still expensive) improvements that could be made if someone looked closely. Fresh flowers on tables were a very nice touch in the lounges. I would absolutely stay here again enjoying the area and town, avoiding the crush of people when bus tours arrive, as there are things to do in the area, or doing nothing but relaxing in the large lounges. I appreciated an owner taking the time to talk with me after I overcame my reluctance to say anything that may be taken in a negative way, but figured if it were MY business, I'd want to know, to improve where I could. Thank you for my stay.

This place has character, tons of it.

We booked a room in the historic building which we were truly happy that we did. Our room overlooked the fjord so it was truly relaxing to simply sit in the balcony and enjoy the views. In the end, that is probably one of the main reasons you decided to go to Balestrand: to relax.

We enjoyed the restaurant, food selection was huge and the quality was really good. We always looked forward to our meals at the hotel restaurant.

I would encourage you to go for long walks in the area, it is just gorgeous and you will not regret it.

By the way, if you left anything at home, there's a little shop located within the lobby area. Prices will be a bit higher but at least it's there in case you need it. The weather was colder than we thought for June so my wife ended up buying a sweater which, by the way, is really nice.

Historic hotel with very beautiful common rooms located in a very panoramic point overlooking the fjord. These are the only positive aspects. The rooms in the modern part are far from four-star level. The mini bar, the safe and the kettle kit are missing. The bathroom is acceptable, the shower has a very high step and a rubber hose with a plastic shower head. No courtesy set in the bathroom just a yellowed and sticky dispenser of low quality. The taps have no mixer and the sink has a plastic cap..... The photos on the site are very different from reality. Breakfast is normal. The only drinks provided are hot tea and coffee, while cappuccino and espresso are subject to charges. The buffet dinner is still good but the restaurant room is very noisy. The price is too high for the services offered.

We did the return day trip to the famous and historic family owned Kvikne's Hotel in Balestrand from Bergen. The ferry leaves Bergen at 8:00 am and there is a return ferry at 4:45 pm.The ferry takes about 4 hours through the famous Sognefjord.

The ferry is a modern ferry run by Fjords Tours...very modern, chic, comfortable ferry with large viewing windows. It is a Cataraman and stunning. It is cleverly designed with sloping walkways so that everyone gets a great view.Aim for the upper deck.It has a nice open deck also for viewing and taking photographs. It has numerous toilets and a nice cafe.

The famous and historic Kvikne's hotel is very welcoming and permit the day trippers access to the entire hotel. We had lunch at the hotel sitting in the Verandah with a gorgeous view. The food menu was ample. There is also a nice shop for souvenirs. The hotel has a superb art collection all over with easy access to the day trippers.

Balestrand is a small charming village with an old historic St. Olaf's Church with an interesting history.Take the 2 kilometer heritage walk pass unique historic painted villa's with unique architectural designs.

I discovered the historic Kviknes Hotel from my book, "One Thousand Places To See Before You Die".

This trip to Kviknes Hotel, Balestrand by the very comfortable Cataraman through the famous Sognefjord was the highlight of our visit to Norway.

Kviknes Hotel's main building, a modern annex connected to the original, elegant structure, stands out from the beautiful fjord waterline like a sore thumb, an architectural ugly ducking that could be forgiven if it provided a comfortable and welcoming stay. Sadly, it does not. The staff was pleasant, and the breakfast was good, but the rooms lacked basic amenities one would expect of a hotel of that stature. We had to bob and weave our way through the lobby when a couple of crowded tour buses arrived (and climbed up to the seventh floor to avoid standing in line for the inadequate elevators). We were grateful that we'd brought our own shampoo. It was fortunate that we'd brought soap (they provided "body wash" in dispensers that didn't work) and there was neither a tea kettle, coffee maker nor a refrigerator/minibar in our room. The carpeting in the hallways is looking a little worn and all in all, this hotel seems as if it's seen better days.

The hotel should be subject to a great reform. The carpets in the rooms are absolutely horrible as well as furniture. The bathroom is tiny , with a bath ( not shower) and it is extremely expensive for the quality. Only the views are inspiring. It is a pity because the building is great and this is a key place to invest in a hotel&spa in a new style that would attract tourists. The hotel itself as it is is depressing and I would never repeat. We spent two nights and we were willing to leave. The place is beautiful but the hotel indoors absolutely to shot a thriller movie…the smell of the meals is spread to the whole hotel and it ia disgusting. We cannot recmwnd the hotel if you are fussy and are used to be in modern hotels.

Kviknes Hotel:
I love historic hotels and few are as historic as the Kviknes. True, we did not stay in the historic wing. That’s O.K. Exploring the ground floor rooms, the dining room, the salon, the hallways and dining areas from the old hotel, with their uniquely and artistically carved furnishings and wonderful local paintings, gives the visitor a full glimpse of the experiences of Gilded Age visitors. Don’t forget to ask to see the chair where Kaiser Wilhelm sat in the salon and don’t forget to spend a few minutes with the framed historic documents in the hallway, again evoking the experience of the guests who came long ago, from far away, by steamship, over long distances, to enjoy some weeks of leisure in Balestrand, at the Kviknes Hotel. A must for any visitor is to take the walk from the front of the hotel, through the town, along the water, in the evening, and to soak in the atmosphere of this very special place on Earth.

A beautiful hotel with vintage querks. Most people stay in the new (1960's) concrete tower block. Vintage, wooden part is expensive because of its status as a historic hotel building. We stayed in the block. Fjord view doesn't mean front facing, it means 7th or 8th floor. The top, on either side. I was disappointed to be back facing but changed my mind as we did have excellent views of the fjord and the mountains on both sides of the little peninsula that the hotel sits on. Also beautiful views of the village and the church.
Food was excellent, if a little repetitive. Plenty of fresh shell fish and and fish. Good quality meat dishes of veal, pork and lamb. Numerous desserts, which did stay the same for the week we were there. Breakfasts were buffet with an extremely large choice of hot, cold, English or continental.
Room was comfortable, but not luxurious, with the standards. Comfy beds, with TV and seating. Bathroom had excellent shower. Liquid soap in dispensers. No window to open so as it was hot had to leave balcony door open.
My only gripes would be, very few electrical sockets and the 2 spare we had were inches off the floor. Not enough in this day in age with the masses of electrical devices that require charging. No tea or coffee supplies and kettle has to be requested.
One more thing to add. Their hiker pack lunch is excellent and saves worrying about finding food when out exploring.

We were disappointed by our stay at the Kviknes hotel - we stayed in the historical property which is absolutely gorgeous building but completed dated rooms. We had to change our room as the first room that was assigned had a strange musty smell as soon as one walked in. The furniture seems to be from the 1970s and never upgraded. The bathrooms are old with old fittings. The best thing about the room was the view and the balcony and considering we paid the higher price for the room with a view in the historical building we were thankful for the view. There are no frills in the room, very basic and surprising for a hotel of this stature.

For dinner, we chose the 4 course dinner instead of the buffer. We were very happy that was the option we went for as walking into this huge dining hall with the buffet was not the best experience. There were rows and rows of people, many from cruise ships that were there for the night and it seemed like a college dining hall rather than a restaurant. My recommendation would be to separate out the buffet from the 4 course option so that one can experience a beautifully prepared meal in a better surrounding. The hotel has enough space to do that. Also, our server was friendly but too busy chatting with a guest throughout the evening and was not very attentive to our needs.

It was a disappointment stay at a beautiful property which really needs to be modernized and renovated. Not a good value for money.
