The hotel was in an excellent location, with great views of the ocean (if you book a seaview room). The service was very good and the rooms were very clean and comfortable.

However, the food was not at all impressive. The breakfast was less than average (although the balcony setting was a super start to the day) and the evening meal, I would not even recommend for a last option. The food is terrible and the restaurant completely lacking in any ambiance. Our advice would be to go further down the beach to the perfect setting we stumbled across where you can sit on the verandah over the beach, and the atmosphere is great. For a more fun, lively night out, try the pizza or BBQ nights at Paje by Nights (1 minutes walk).

Our main problem with this hotel though, was with the owner himself. He seemed to lack any hospitality skills, as I witnessed when he broke into a complete verbal assult of an Italian customer, who simply asked to cancel his diving session later that day due to his wife's illness. The owner used language I would not repeat and informed him in no uncertain terms he would (I'll politely re-hrase to "ruin") his entire holiday. This was all in front of me, and the poor man left very distressed. Along with this, the owner insisted on monopolising the lounge area constantly (every evening) watching football, etc. at a volume that could be heard loudly, when we retired to our room to escape.

There are some wonderful excursions to go on in Zanzibar, from this location. I highly recommend the Blue Safari (book the original version, not the local cheaper version, as it really is inferior). However, do not book through the owner at the hotel, as when we tried, he added significant commission to everything, so we booked direct. Particularly, do not exchange money at the hotel as when we tried, we were given a ridiculous amont until we did our own calculations and questioned theirs. So, you need to be aware and question their rate to get the correct amount.

If you are prepared to change location and go to a slightly more secluded resort, we would recommend the Michamvi water sport resort. We spent a day here and it was fantastic. Excellent chef and great watersports, without the abuse!!!

Arrived late in the evening and had some confusion with booking, which was sorted out nicely. We got fantastic rooms and manager himself showed rooms and taught all details, starting with where to find light switches. It was great, because my mother has seeing disability, and new places is always a little bit struggle. I did diving course and during days rest of the family had great time. Breakfast had been great. There were lot of different kind of travellers, which was nice. Lively, but still quiet and relaxing place. We ate at diving center the lunch which was fantastic and supper at local place just outside the hotel, also fantastic. "Paje at night" did not have great food ( at least compared to other 2 places), though was more busy and fancy.

Just excellent and could not recommend it enough. Clean room, very big, with a nice view. Very big bathroom. Hot water, Ac, all amenities. Very nice pool, very quiet. Staff very friendly and accomodating. I saw some comments here that were not very positive, I sincerely do not know what they have expected. The breakfast was one of the better I had in Zanzibar. For sure we'll come again!

We loved the fact that it was a small intimate hotel with most rooms facing the beach.

Location: About 1 hour from airport and Stone Town. Great beach. Walking distance to lots of other resorts and restuarants. If you're a keen diver, there is a diving centre at the hotel.

Rooms: Basic but clean and comfortable, inclusive of kettle and safe. Bathroom had classy fittings and all modern amenities (appears to be a concern at lots of other Zanzibar hotels). Beach is about 10 metres away when the tide is in. We thought that the best time at the beach was early afternoon (we were there in Sept, so sun not too hot, and water was clean. Later in the afternoon, the beach get filled with leaves)

Food: Very tasy and service was great! We had a lobster that was the size of athe platter it was in! (Lobster thermidor and prawn pasta comes highly recommended!). Everything is freshly made, so may take a while to prepare. However, you can order earlier from your room if you would prefer not to wait. The fresh fruit juices were simply divine! Beakfasts consisted of fresh fruit and eggs. We sampled the restuarant at Cristal Resort (within walking distance) - the view was superb but the food was nowhere close to Arabian Nights. Also tried going to the restuarant at Paje at Night (next door), they refused to serve us as 8pm was too late - other guests told us we should be very glad about that, apparently the service and food were terrible.

Mngt and service levels: Superb! Both the owner and manager interact personally with their guests, without being overbearing. They were both friendly and extremely helpful. All other staff were very friendly as well and always keen to assist.

Overall rating - great value for money! We absolutely loved it and can't wait to return.

If you're not a kite surfer (this hotel is smack dab in the middle of several kite surfing rental shops and on the Paje kite surfing beach), and are looking for a relaxing, comfortable, spot on the beach I would avoid this place. First off, the food is FRIGHTFUL -- I don't know who the reviewers are who rave about the breakfast, because it/s a shocking affair -- beige eggs, slimy beige pancakes and dry white bread was on the offing every day -- not to mention instant coffee in the land of coffee (we only managed one day of it and then went elsewhere). Our first dinner (which we regretted) was horrific -- dried out fish in an oily sauce, mushy veg, etc. The staff, while pleasant, all seem totally lethargic and disconnected from any sense of service. The rooms, while sort of clean, were so horribly decorated and bland you may as well have been at summer camp, not a tropical destination. The bathroom had all the ambiance of an abattoir with white cracked white tile all the way to the ceilings, the not-so-distant smell of sewage, and towels so old they literally disintegrated in our hands. The "beach front" areas of the hotel are horrible, walled, blazing hot (no breeze due to the knee walls all around them) sand boxes with no view of the ocean whatsoever. And the pool is in the back corner of the lot away from the beach with no view of the water and instead a view of a wall. Nobody swam once the whole time I was here and it makes sense. At check in, the manager had the audacity to ask us to switch off the hot water heater while away and they seem to meter shampoo (tiny ketchup-like packets -- seems as if 2 per stay is all you get) and the pool towels with abandon (even though nobody seemed to swim as I mentioned). The only saving graces were so-so A/C in the rooms, and decently fast wifi, which only works in the lobby, mind you. The manager had the audacity to ask us to switch off the hot wif 2 per stay is all you get) and the pool towels with abandon (even though nobody seemed to swim as I mentioned). But for $100+/night, you can do far better elsewhere.

The sea view room was spacious and right on the beach.
The man who checked us in showed us how to set the password on the safe and told us to keep our valuables there.
After returning from lunch a few hours later we opened the safe to find a good portion of our US cash stolen.
We confronted the manager and he denied that this had happened and refused to believe us. He asked us to leave the next day (which we were extremely happy to do). When they refunded us for the remainder of the nights we had prepaid for we were 'cheated' again!
Two of the US100 bills were pre 2003 (not the new crisp bills we prepaid with) and are not accepted in Zanzibar.

My friend and I stayed at the Annexe hotel for 4 nights after being in Nungwi for 5 nights.

Paje was absolutely stunning!!!! The beach is one of the best beaches I have ever seen especially when the tide is going out and all the local women are working on the beach. We found the staff extremely helpful and very polite and they couldn't do enough for you. The rooms were spacious and very clean. The food was good and reasonably priced. We don't kite surf and you don't have to be into kite surfing to appreciate the beauty of this place.

I would highly recommend this hotel and this location.

We arrranged our trip through Michael Sweeney, of Zanzibar Travel, who was extremely helpful and informative and without his help I am sure we wouldn't have had such a memorable trip!

I really wanted to get home and be able to write my opinion calmly, since I have not experienced a situation in such an unpleasant hotel in my life! I took my mother to spend a few nights at that hotel with the aim of making her comfortable and enjoying her vacations, however, the woman in charge of the reception did everything possible because it was not like that. I can understand that a person has a bad day, I can understand that in high season the prices of the rooms are somewhat exorbitant, I can even understand that in a hotel next to the beach I have bugs in the rooms ... what I will never understand it is the bad manners and bad behaviour that this lady had with my mother. If you want to pay by card, forget them, because they literally told us to have problems with the bank .. strange ... right? As we did not understand the behavior of the attendant very well from the first moment, we decided to pay the room day after day, which was not allowed by the tripadvisor, it was allowed to give us a totally exorbitant price, even so my mother decided that she wanted to spend the rest of This holiday, however, this lady entered one day without knocking inside her room waking and frightening her, throwing her out of the room without any explanation, we even feel a certain level of racism on the part of this lady and I am going to do everything be in my hand so that everyone knows the unpleasant situation experienced in this hotel that is not so good to be so expensive. If you're working in front of the public, at least give her a smile, this lady treated my mother very badly, she did not want to give her the Wi-Fi password, she was rude to her and I repeat, my mother is a lady from head to toe ... bad time to be rude, and bad choice of people to be inconsiderate, I sincerely hope that the hotel owner read this and can give us some explanation of why this lady treated my mother so badly

Trouble in paradise
We spent a weekend in October 2014 in the Arabian Nights hotel in Paje. The hotel in itself is very nice with large rooms, well-kept and very nice staff. Its location right off the beautiful beach is also first class.
However one incident of madness from the manager ruined the pleasure of staying there.
He was very helpful initially. We had inquired about watching a football match in a nice little place in the public area of the reception with some friends. As there was a problem with the tv there he had another tv brought in. So far, so good. The madness started when the manager realized that one of our guests was a local Zanzibarian. First he sent one of his staff over to tell our friend was not allowed to be in the reception. She seemed really embarrassed about the situation, and after a little while the manager took over. He insisted that he had to go, but after a 10 minute argument he gave up, and allowed our friend to stay. His rudeness was unbelievable and when he understood we wanted to check out of the hotel, he replied that he didn't bother. That was probably because we had paid for the room in advance.
If you have any sensitivity towards apartheid like management, I would find another hotel.
