Matemwe Lodge is located on an amazing stretch of Zanzibar. With chalets right on the water you can watch the fishing dows sail by while you sap up the luxury and comfort of the hotel. It's also a quick boat ride to the best snorkelling and diving on the island. TrueAfrica went out of their way to make sure our...

I was fortunate enough to spend a full week at Matemwe lodge and loved every minute of it. The meals were delectable - all were 3 course meals with fresh meat, veggie, and seafood options excluding breakfast which is made to order. The staff was top notch - all very friendly and just a joy to have a conversation with...

Very enjoyable and restful experience. The lodge was well equipped with sufficient privacy, with a beautiful ocean view. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The lodge offered snorkeling and different type of activities. The guides were well trained and experienced.

This place just makes you feel good. Everything is perfect, the decor is fantastic, cleanness, the view, the nature surrounding it. Above all the staff is the best ever, they are friendly and attentive but never intrusive. I was made feel like at home. Food was another highlight of my holiday; all the dishes were fresh, everything was home-made. One...

We traveled and stayed over Christmas 2016 and loved every minute of it. With two young daughters (11 & 8) there is always the concern - will there be enough to do - wow we went snorkelling every day (it is extra for worth it), our own speed boat and the guides found dolphins 4 out of 5 days -...

I stayed in the Leila Villa. It was phenomenal. I loved the private pool on the roof. George, our butler, was a font of information and was just the best. The setting was so peaceful. It was so relaxing, quiet and idyllic. The free snorkeling, kayaking and reef walks were also awesome. An amazingly personal, special experience.

This is a great place to stay for a few days of relaxation. The hotel is right on the beach and each room has a little patio with a huge hammock overlooking the sea - it couldn't be more picturesque. There's a water sports centre where you can organise snorkelling trips - thoroughly recommended as there are pods of dolphins...

A wonderful Eco resort for a getaway. The bungalows are much larger than your average luxury room. Views are stunning. Nothing was too much trouble. Special mention to Martin the Manager and Ben the tour guide. I will be returning next year.

Amazing experience, we were on our honeymoon and we had a fantastic time. The lodge is very relaxing, rooms by the sea with perfect sunrise view. Lovely restaurants by the sea. We have been lucky and managed to swim with dolphins while snorkeling. The spa is also epic, with one of the main room with sea view and open windows...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Vibrant yet relaxed Matemwe, one of the first lodges in Zanzibar, has perfected the tropical island experience. Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe’s peaceful location and famed relaxed atmosphere, makes it the ideal place to unwind. Guests quickly ease into the laid-back rhythm of island life, planning their day around the tides and their mood. The relaxed daily routines of Matemwe’s guests include enjoying fresh seafood, poolside cocktails, massages or simply hanging out in a hammock. The lodge has plenty on offer for the more active with superb diving and snorkeling off the renowned Mnembe Atoll; a highlight for many. Built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 spacious suites has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean with its constantly changing hues of blue. Here you can watch the fishermen head out every morning at dawn or listen to the songs of the village women as they harvest seaweed. The large bathrooms have both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. The open-air restaurant sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm fringed beach and gently rocking dhows. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. ... more   less
