Nestled on a peaceful beachfront, Zanzibar Pearl Boutique Hotel & Villas garners praise for its idyllic location and tranquil atmosphere. Guests are enamored with the spacious and immaculate rooms that offer breathtaking views, though a few mention basic amenities and connectivity glitches. While the cleanliness and professional service are frequently lauded, creating a memorable and safe stay, the hotel's value is occasionally questioned due to concerns over food quality and unforeseen charges. Despite this, the serene environment and amenities like diving and a pool contribute to the hotel's allure, even with some limitations on fresh water availability.

I stayed at this resort with my son for a week. The beach is wonderful and the views from the resort are fantastic all day long. The garden in which the bungalows stand is beautiful and well maintained. The dining room/bar/reception area is very pleasant. The swimming pool area is nice, just a pity the pool is not bigger and a different shape ( not round) so that swimming is possible (esp since the tides limit the amount of time that one can swim in the sea). Now it is more an area for children to enjoy themselves.
The rooms are basic, but nice. Contrary to what it says on the website though, there is NO airconditioning in the rooms only fans! I was very glad we had a seafront room so that I could leave the doors open at night, otherwise I don’t think I would have been able to sleep very well ( I don’t like fans very much ), even if it meant attracting some mosquitoes ( luckily there were nets).
A good idea would be to have a tap outside the bungalows so that one can rinse the sand off one’s feet before entering the room. The rooms were kept very clean by the staff.
Breakfast was limited in choice if you don’t want to eat eggs every day or sweet pancakes. To make toast you had to wait very very long as the toaster is extremely slow, then you had to ask the waiter to bring you some butter. On the buffet there was only peanut butter available and one type of tasteless jam ( Tomato? Strawberry? One could not tell). For a country with so much fruit it should be possible to have a selection of fruit jams available. If you wanted some cheese, again you had to ask the waiter to bring it to you and the portion was very small. Not a good system.
The other meals were better, but I missed vegetables and sometimes , when fried, the food was far too greasy. The deserts were not fantastic. The African night on Tuesday was a welcome initiative with the buffet, but the food was very bland and tasteless, a surprise for a country that produces so many spices!
The staff in the restaurant were friendly and efficient and it would be nice to see them in a more vibrant uniform.
The Manager was always present and available and for ever inquiring if everything was ok.
Bikes are available for tides on the beach. And board games are available in the dining room.
As there is not much to do around it would be nice to offer afternoon tea/coffee in the dining area (although a kettle is available in the rooms) so that one could socialise with the other guests.
The hotel offers a number of paying activities and excursions.
There is also a small shop with souvenirs which in my opinion is too expensive.
Overall we had a lovely stay at this resort .

Response from zanzibarpearl, Manager at Zanzibar Pearl Boutique Hotel & Villas
Responded 17 Feb 2020
Dear Valued Guest, Thank you very much for taking your time and writing us a review, our guest experience is very important for us and achieving guest full satisfaction is our main target. There are few wrong statements in your review that I would like to have the chance to rectify: you say that room has no air conditioning “contrary” to what is stated in the website, well if you take your time and look better at our website in the menu Suites & Villas you will be able to “clearly” see that the symbol of the AC is present only in the Villas, you have booked a suits and nowhere we say that suites are equipped with AC. We also disagree about your statement that on the breakfast table there is only peanut butter as every morning are always available Nutella, Peanut Butter and mix tropical fruit jam daily homemade by our pastry chef, the reason why we do not expose any other food is because due to our breakfast long opening hours, 7 to 10:30 am, leaving food exposed to the tropical climate will may spoil the food with consequent possibility of developing bacteria which we absolutely want to avoid, as well you say that the portion of cheese was very small, well again, as we say during the check-in briefing, we want to avoid wastage so all is served in fair size but anybody who wishes to have more can just ask and waiter will bring extras at no additional cost, again you say you were missing vegetables, all our main dishes are “always” served with salad or vegetables according to the customer wish and, again, if anybody wishes to have extra vegetables is just a matter of ask. In regard to the Swahili dinner, you are the first person calling it tasteless, usually, we have the opposite reaction, guest judges it very spicy and sometimes too tasteful. You say that the manager was always present and available but not even 1 time you have raised with him any of the issues you have mentioned in your review so he could’ve taken care of it and accommodate any of your needs. By the look of all your reviews, I have noted that you are a very hard customer to satisfy as out of 15 reviews you have written only 5 are 5 dots, 4 are 4 dots and 6 are 3 to 1 dot. It appears that you rather write about issues in your review rather than report issues to the management on-site so they could be taken care of during your vacation. Thank you again for writing your impression and we will work on some of your suggestions.

I had a wonderful experience under the care and attention of the staff at Zanzibar Pearl recently. I would recommend you stay at this hotel most definitely! I was on a solo trip and enjoyed a serene and most peaceful experience - complete with Swahili facial, manicure and delicious meals just steps from the beach. The rooms are stunning, simple elegance, with white walls, spacious showers and beautiful views of the pool, or the beach or the lovely manicured jungle gardens. So much to love about this boutique resort and I can't wait to come back with some of my lucky clients:). See you soon!

I’ve visited Zanzibar many times as a long term East African resident. This was the best experience my wife and I have had to date as it suited our requirement perfectly. A very well presented hotel that maintains an authentic Zanzibari feel with great service and attention to detail. Everything was well made, well presented or well sourced and the service was attentive without being intrusive. We cycled on the available mountain bikes and enjoyed the spa facility. We will definitely visit again, our new favourite island hangout.

We booked 4 nights at this hotel in February for the Easter week and had looked very much forward to it as part of our holidays in Zanzibar. Upon arrival to Pearl Boutique Hotel we were greeted by a male front desk manager and a couple of friendly female staff members. The manager informed us that we could use mountain bikes free of charge, that we probably couldn’t go on a boat tour with our 11 months year old baby, that we needed reef shoes to swim in the sea and that it was likely to rain during our entire stay. After that kind introduction, which took approximately 1 hour since they asked for an upfront payment of the room and didn’t believe us when we said that 50% was already paid when we made the reservation and needed to check their system, we were shown to our room. In the mail from the lady at the reservation department, the room was referred to as a “Pearl suite”. It was a sea front, tiny room measuring an estimated 16 square meters with a small double bed and two old fans. The fans were not connected though, so the room was extremely hot and humid.

We asked to be shown an alternative room and they offer us the “Pearl villa” for 270 USD per night, which is with a 10% discount to which is added a 5% “card fee”. The reservation of the “Pearl suite” was made with a 15% discount due to the low season. But, as they reminded us, they don’t do any refunds so it made sense to accept their current price and top up what we already disbursed rather than to leave and go back to our previous hotel.

The “Pearl villa” is a pleasant room with AC, an out door bathroom and a plunge pool, but the name is still misleading - it is not a villa - it’s a normally sized hotel room with a nice, private outdoor space..! It is also next to the ocean has a beautiful view. We were supplied with one bottle of filtered water per day for three persons, and the shower cream / shampoo in the room was of cheap quality.

We booked half board, where a three course dinner with a very ambitious menu was included. Unfortunately, the food was OK at best. It would probably be easier to maintain high quality with a shorter menu. The service staff were very kind, friendly and flexible.

The breakfast was also generous in size and the taste/quality was OK.

We would never stay here again or recommend anyone to to so due to the overpriced rates used in combination with the lack of high quality expected with those rates - this includes the food, the beds and the entire interior both in the rooms and in the common areas. As a reference, we stayed at Park Hyatt in Stone Town in the beginning of our trip to Zanzibar which was only a little pricier and the experience is not comparable in terms of the standard and services provided.

There is no denying that the Pearl is in a beautiful location and the proximity of the beach is an obvious appeal but there are just a couple of issues beneath the surface that stop it being perfect. It should be said that the rooms are simple, cool and functional and the grounds are effectively maintained. And the staff and very polite and helpful.
The first issue is probably beyond the hotel's control - the fake Masai patrolling up and down the beach. They're friendly and do leave you alone if you ask them to but everyday was an exercise to dismiss them. That coupled with the locals wanting to act as nature guides when you walk out to the reef, gets a bit tiresome.
The second issue resulted from the hotel trying to mass cater for a full house by offering theme nights and buffets. The idea of trying local cuisine and witnessing 'local' music and dancing is interesting but it needs to be done right. BBQ night was a debacle. The vegetarian option was pasta and vegetables with little imagination added. How could such a quality establishment not have a variety of vegetarian dishes available. The meat option was a plate of mixed BBQ meats piled on and delivered to the table. Fortunately our daughter was paying attention, the chicken was raw. BBQ 101 - cook the food properly. The manager was told. An offer of re-cooking was made but by then trust was blown. A meal by the pool was offered a few nights later and was tastefully done and the menu had returned to normal and was great but how did we find ourselves here?
On the final night the restaurant service fell apart, to the point that the chef was repeatedly banging the bell for service with greater repetition than the beat on the background music. He was frustrated, we were frustrated (25 minutes to remove finished plates, no drinks order taken). The service had been good to that point but finish poorly, followed by the repeated requests to settle the bill before we went to bed.
A nice place, nice staff, but a few elements soured the enjoyment.

Dear Valued guest, Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to review us and value our property. We appreciate all forms of guest feedback; it is through constructive comments that we can continually improve our services. but from the pattern of the reviews that you left out of the first 20 barely, 5 were satisfactory to you, guess your expectations are higher. The beach is public and open to anyone to access and walk by. Of course, there will be vendors who will try to sell you something, but this is beyond our control as we can only control it up until a few meters after the sunbeds. It was not a trial to mass cater but we do have themed nights from time to time where we offer local cuisine with entertainment which is very much appreciated by other guests as they get to experience the local food and culture. When you say it needs to be done right in what way if that’s how it is done? It’s an interesting point that you are trying to pass through but in what capacity do you have to give insight into the local culture? The BBQ is a mixed-served BBQ with 2 different choices. Choice of Meat and Fish. In the case of meat, there are beef skewers, chicken, lamb chop, pork sausage, and pork ribs. It was okay for you until when you called the guest relation manager and advised that your daughter’s chicken was not well done in the middle. He offered you to bring another, but you refused, and instead, you chose to start to shout at him that your dinner is ruined and walked away from him. ATTITUDE 101 – show some humanity when someone has been apologetic and willing to rectify an issue. Human is to err. He prepared for you and your family a romantic dinner setup even after the scene that you caused which you admit having been great. A kitchen serving 250 dishes in a night, what do you expect? That they crawl silently from the kitchen to the guests’ tables? The chef must ring the bell to signal the waiters that the food is ready. All the drink orders are taken before the meals, so it is impossible that you had finished eating before you had any drink. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and we look forward to welcoming you again for your next visit to Zanzibar.

My fiancé and I are scuba divers and found this place through the PADI website when looking for a dive resort for our time on Zanzibar. There were a few options, and we are so happy we ended up choosing this one. The diving was absolutely incredible, so much life to see and our guide Chief was awesome! And unlike other dive resorts we've stayed at, the dive shop wasn't located on-site. Instead, it was a short minute walk down the beautiful, white sand beach. What was so beneficial about this is that on days we just wanted to relax and not dive there wasn't the hustle and bustle of a busy dive shop right in front of the resort. Which leads me to another highlight, the atmosphere (or 'vibe' if you will) was exactly what we were looking for during our stay. We are laid back travelers and appreciate the same type of environment from the accommodations we choose. We like having a quiet, out of the way, 'home base' and going out to explore the more crowded areas of places that we travel, which is exactly what Zanzibar Pearl was. Not to mention, the staff and the service they provided was next level. For example, we were arriving late our first night and the kitchen would be closed by the time we got to the hotel. When were picked up at the airport the manager called our driver so he could speak with us and ask what we wanted for dinner upon our arrival. When we finally got there, they had a table set just for us and the food they served was not only freshly prepared but delicious. This thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and above and beyond service was consistent throughout our stay by everyone we interacted with. They were attentive without being invasive and accommodating without being pushy. They helped with several outings we took (Jozani Forest, Stonetown, and Turtle Island) by arranging a driver and guide to ensure we got the most out of our time there. If you do end up hiring a driver, I highly recommend you ask for Kocha (pronounced coach-ah). He is a local who was happy to share his knowledge of the island with us and even stopped to pick us fresh guava from the side of the road during one of our excursions. Overall, our stay was incredible from beginning to end. I can’t say enough about the level of service, the delicious food, clean and comfortable villas, and beautiful setting this place provided.

Very nice location inside a well kept. large and flowery garden, right by the white beach and the reef. When not low tide it is possible to snorkle out to the reef with decent corals and smaller fish, incl. an interesting tiger snake eel and small geometric morays. Bigger fish and turtles are generally not seen in Zanzibar. Whale sharks not seen for many years.
We stayed at the Pearl Villa, next to the beach but still private, outdoor and private indoor showers, comfortable rooms with aircon (needed), mosquito net, daily meticulous cleaning and new drinking water. Masaii guards keeping 24x7 watch.
Good a la carte style breakfast, decent lunch selection, and daily changed dinner options (3 starters, 3 main, 3 deserts). Good wine list, bar.
Without exception, professional and friendly service, from cleaning, waiters to operational managers.
Decent glutenfree support. Highly flexible and helpful with meals to get us out of a safari stomach. Decent wi-fi in the main areas, some breakdown of wi-fi at the villa, the staff trying their best but service provider having some issues, incl. in othe hotels, ie. Zanzibar slow style in the weekend.
Recommended.

A 3 star hotel which has been advertised as 4 star. An awful experience with a very bad behaviour from an incompetent Hotel Manager who was unhelpful and totally rude.
They tried to charges us a 5% if we supposed to pay by card.
The rooms haven’t any internet connection and we used to go to the next hotel which was approximately 10 min by walking.
The Hotel provided only one filtered tap water for two persons, to drink and brush the teeth. Honestly?!?! I cannot even imagine how customers in a very hot weather can survive!!! Although the fact that we complained to the Manager directly he only suggested to us that we should buy more bottles of water if needed to a local shop in an unknown area!
Last and not least….the breakfast that was poor in quality and quantity. More than one fly in the jars of fruits and around the bowls. The waiter should ask every time the chef if we could have some more food from a very small selection of the menu.
Even though, by the end they made mistake to charge us more money for the infrastructure tax.
A completely useless waste of money and time!! To avoid….

I am so impressed with how people like you which proclaim to be travellers, you created every possible story trying to get compensation and when the compensation attempt did not go through you decided to punish us by making multiple reviews. Cheap scams that did not bother to research on the area that they decide to book. Since you are a certified hotel grader let me put something’s straight point by point on your review. You and your wife with whom she wrote a bad review as well and now that you have seen after your proclaimed lies, we are still been reviewed positively you decided to drop your own. First of all it is already advised to you before you arrive the resort and even at check in that if you pay by any card there shall be a surcharge which is merely a bank fee. This is standard all over the island and depends with which bank you are using. So do not pretend like it’s a charge that we tried to forcefully take from you. Furthermore you had the chance to choose the mode of payment to use. Could have been cash. You arrived Matemwe and it was raining. The weather was not the most brilliant one for a beach vacation and what did you decide to do. You decided to put up a show on everything. You made a big complain saying that there was absolute no internet connection in your room. The room had internet connection and you were the only one complaining of all the clients we had in house. The Manager came to your room and connected with his phone and everything was working so well. He asked you to connect and you did and even went ahead and suggested to make a search on the web to further make sure that it was working. Which you did and to your words you said oh thank you very much it is perfectly fine. The bottle of water provided in the room is ONLY for brushing teeth. We never suggest or advertise anywhere that we do provide free drinking water. If anyone needs drinking water, you have to purchase from the bar, like all the other drinks but you refused saying that you need to buy the one that is in plastic bottles. We are eradicating the use of plastic in the hotel and yet you bring fourth demands that we provide water in the plastic bottle. If that’s what you needed you were advised on a local shop to go buy. You did not expect that we were to go and purchase it for you were you? Hot weather? Why make such lies and everyone knows that April is one of the coolest month in Zanzibar. Furthermore, does it mean that been in Africa and its hot i should give you free water. Breakfast . HA! HA! HA! YOU MAKE ME LAUGH .... poor quality and quantity for someone which between him and his wife they ordered during just 1 breakfast, 10 eggs and 10 sausages and we provided them to you without hesitation. I wondered how you could really make it through the day with such an amount of eggs for breakfast. I would get sick and so are the normal people. We usually provide the standard portion for breakfast which is 2 eggs and 2 sausages along with fruits, pastries, pancakes but if there is a request of more we gladly provide. Did you read Zanzibar Laws? Or not? As a tourist you have to pay the infrastructure tax something that you did not want to pay. It is a government tax that is mandatory for everyone. Why did you not mention that you decided to go to a hotel in stone town, why did not you not relocate to a beach hotel. Showing that you were not happy to be at the beach when it was raining and you figured that you made a wrong choice of destination. But that fault is for whom to blame. Yet you asked the manager if we could have done anything for the weather. What a silly request! What can we do to control nature? You are an entitled person used to get free things and when you could not trick us to giving you everything you wanted for free you decided it’s time to show your true colors. What a clown. I leave it for the other travellers to go through our reviews and they will make their judgments.

We spent 7 nights in this beautiful hotel during the covid pandemic in March of 2021. Everything was just simply perfect! The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. We booked the air-conditioned rooms (Deluxe room I think) and it was clean and spacious. The breakfast is also good and I also recommend to eat a'la carte because the chef cooks deliciously. The beach is super peaceful, you can easily relax. The water is super nice and warm. The pool is also amazing! Thank You Zanzibar Pearl for everything! We really want to return one day! Janka & Steve

We were here for 10 days and had a great time. We were looking for peace and quiet and got exactly that.
The hotel is located directly on the beach, but there are only a few people. At low tide, the water retreats several hundred meters, bathing is not possible all day. But the spacious pool is a remedy.
The beautifully designed complex with its large palm trees, trees, flowers and beautiful paths is in top condition. Everything is very clean and lovingly decorated.
The staff are all super friendly and helpful. The restaurant offers many local and international dishes. During our stay there was also a "traditional evening" with Massai show and a buffet with varied local dishes. A highlight!
It is also worth mentioning that the Wi-Fi connection was very strong and reliable everywhere - great when some remote work came up in between.
Many thanks to the whole team of the Zanzibar Pearl!
