My experience both times I visited hippo lakes was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I arrived, the charm of Hippo Lakes captivated me. Made me immediately never want to leave. First the tents offered comfort and numerous amenities. They were always clean. The staff cleaning of the tents everyday was on another level they mopped, swept everywhere, Awesome, and even organized our stuff. The sounds of nature, the sight of hippos was straight out of a dream. The property is blended seamlessly into its natural surroundings while offering all the modern comforts I could ever hope for. Waking up to panoramic views of the lake and wildlife just outside my window felt so magical. Every morning there was the most incredible sunrises. The staff is warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about making every guest’s stay unforgettable. The customer service is amazing. Every time I saw a staff member they would wave and smile at me making me feel welcome. Shaun and MJ the game drivers knowledge of the local environment made the game drives and guided walks both educational and thrilling. You never know what was gonna happen on a game drive each was diffeent and equally as fun. The activities at Hippo Lakes cater to everyone’s likes. Other than the game drivers there were so many things to do on property. I was never bored or without anything to do. My brother could fish while my mom got a massage and I played in the pool. The dining experience deserves special mention. Every meal was to die for. I am a very picky eater and the chefs and kitchen staff were always willing to make accommodations to my meals. They made sure I had something amazing to eat everyday. Everything I tried was so delicious. The kitchen staff and servers are so warm and friendly. I always looked forward to seeing Titus and Washington at every meal. Every staff member looked truly so happy to be working at Hippo Lakes. At Hippo Lakes time seemed to stand still and I made some of my favorite memories ever at Hippo Lakes. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or visiting South Africa for the first time, this safari is an absolute must-visit. I can’t wait to return to this slice of paradise! Hippo Lakes was my favorite trip ever. You don’t even need to have a large interest in nature, the staff at Hippo Lakes just made the experience so enjoyable.

My husband and I traveled to Hippo Lakes as a beginning to our world travels. Words can't explain the experience we had. From their attention to every detail, the luxury accomodations, the safari trips, dinners every night with guides having dinner with us, animals roaming the property safely for our viewing pleasure, two trips to big game preserve, great drivers wherever we went, wonderful picnic one day at top of mountain over looking the beautiful and expansive preserve, Snead, Sean's s wife attention to every detail including excellent housekeeping staff keeping our rooms clean and warm and finally the food! Again no words to describe the luxurious, fabulous and wide array of different delacies . We were worn out everyday but came back to elegant tables set for kings and queens with our every wish accommodated. Evening dinners were intimate, with extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff along with guides, Sean, "G", MG and drivers Reaner and Tom who shared their knowledge of the country and animals. The manager of the property also came and visited with us with his adorable Jack Russell. On last day, we were standing on deck of our tent, and a impala came up so close and just looked at us.. I cried I didn't want to leave. G said "you can leave Africa, but Africa never leaves you." A perfect ending to the trip of a lifetime! Thank you so much to everyone!!!

My wife and I finally made the long-awaited trip to South Africa - and Hippo Lakes did not disappoint. Rangers who were excellent in locating animals and describing their habitat and traits. Staff that provided all our needs with a smile and the accommodations left nothing to be desired. Hippo Lakes is a one of a kind location that offers beautiful views, access to see the Big 5 as well as other animals in their natural environment. After, we took the extended visit to Cape Town and the Hippo Lakes crew hooked us up with a fantastic guide Ben, wonderful historic accommodations, and a great 3 day excursion. Thirteen days we will never forget and we so appreciate the Hippo Lakes crew who made it possible. Can’t more highly recommend them if you are considering a quality trip to South Africa!

What a unbelievable experience I had at Hippo Lakes. I was scouting for a special place to celabrate our 30th wedding anniversary. It stated at the very friendly personal reception. The tented rooms are massive. And the attention to detail is next level - from the bespoke selected furniture to the private plunge pool, to the humongous king size bed, it was certainly a place where one could rest and enjoy a special occasion. The bush braai (barbecue) dinner was just magical. The selection of local South African red wines with dinner was perfect and the bottle I had was superior. The night drive afterwards was yet another surprise. The night time sightings were exceptional but the herd of Hippo that came out to graze on the banks was really special. Especially with them being very shy. After all the lodge is their moniker. Our Jeep Jock was very knowledgeable. He also knew a lot about the night time sounds like Scops Owls and Nightjars. The main lodge is just next level. A large pool is overlooking the dam, a special spa, gym and shop all are included here. The most special was the hand crafted Hippopotamus made entirely from washers by a local artisan - see photo. A experience never to be forgotten.

Hippo Lakes is the perfect blend of luxury and the great outdoors. The tents were beautifully designed, offering all the comforts of a five-star lodge while keeping us close to nature.
The hospitality team deserves a special mention. They anticipated our needs before we even voiced them, and the personalized service made our stay so special.

I don’t have enough great things to say about the resort, the process getting there, or the staff. All beyond amazing! The pickup and ride to the resort was seamless. The whole trip was way beyond my expectations. Truly 5 star service, accommodations and activities. Beautiful accommodations (I can hardly even call it a tent it’s so luxurious). The staff goes out of their way to make every detail of every single aspect perfect. Can we talk about the food? WOW! Top shelf every single meal. We will definitely be going back!!!

Our recent stay at Hippo Lakes Luxury Safari Lodge exceeded all anticipated expectations. From a warm and welcoming arrival pick-up to departure drop off, under the direction of property manager Shinade, all services and adventures were professional and efficient. She and her team of housekeepers, waiters Washington, Tutus and Mary were always available to quickly accommodate all needs and requests and always done with a sincere and warm smile. The luxury tent accommodations provided all necessary and needed amenities and displayed decor reflecting the local culture. Included was a safe, bathrobes, refrigerator, coffee, tea, snacks and fruit. As an example of attention to detail a vegan chocolate bar was included for my vegan wife. At all meals chefs Rina and Gapolang took pride in creating delicious choices and gave special attention to those with dietary restrictions. Vegan creations were culinary delights and beautifully presented. Dietary needs were also accommodated for all snacks on game drives. Especially appreciated was the vegan meal at the Bush Braai ( BBQ) a wonderfully enjoyable South African tradition. Meal communal eating was conducive to interaction and conversation. Daily game drives whether with the gregarious Shaun or more lowkey Anton were informative adventures making all animal encounters exciting events providing time for picture taking . The deep passion of both rangers instilled a real appreciation for natural habitats for all animals. All of the big five will not be seen here but outside options are available. A farewell performance of song and dance by the staff was a heartwarming send off ending a unique 5 day safari experience with long lasting lifetime memories.

We took our family of five (three teenagers) to Hippo Lakes. One of the most remarkable things about our experience was that from booking our trip in April to our 'goodbyes' on our last day in July, the Hippo Lakes team sought to cater to our specific needs and create an experience we would never forget. The entire team takes a concierge approach to every guest and does so with a genuine graciousness making it obvious they enjoy your being there and want you to have the trip of a lifetime. The tents, the housekeeping, the food, the safari drives, the animal knowledge and education, the excursions, the outdoor dining experiences - - all were executed with us in mind. There is no telling how many safaris our rangers had led, but one would have thought every animal citing was their first - they appeared to be as excited as we were! We were met on morning safari drives with Hippo Lakes tumblers for warm coffee and blankets in the vehicles. Chef Rina crafted amazing meals and was attentive to the needs (and sometime pickiness) of our kids and gladly made substitutions available. The grounds and all the facilities were immaculate displaying a care and attention to every detail. And as we hoped they would, the animals showed up for us creating memorable moments one after another. But I would have to say...the people are what make Hippo Lakes the special place it is. Anton has assembled a team that is second to none and it is apparent they are well-led. They love what they do, and they love people. As we think about our second trip to Africa, there are so many places to go and see on that vast continent, but we really can’t imagine going anywhere else but Hippo Lakes. They will be a part of our next African safari for sure!

As someone that lives in the US but grew up in South Africa, I’m always nervous going to holiday destinations in South Africa because I’ve been to so many incredible game lodges throughout my life and it’s hard not to compare them. From the get-go, I realized that Hippo Lakes is a very special piece of heaven. The luxury accommodation gives you a sense that you have perfect privacy, but that you’re just close enough to the other tents so that you don’t feel isolated. The views are unbelievable. Areas that have an abundance of game in southern Africa usually are in the bush with very few larger bodies of water. To wake up and walk out onto your expansive deck and see crocodiles and hippos is a rare and beautiful thing. The thing that stood out the most to us though was the staff. I’ve stayed at a lot of 5 star resorts here in the US and I’ve never felt as welcomed as I have a Hippo Lakes. It’s the trip of a lifetimes

This was a once in a lifetime trip. Videos or pictures will never do this place justice. Hippo lakes is secluded by multiple lakes and a decent amount of vegetation. The tents are located right on the lake, which in itself is amazing, however you actually do get an up close look at the wildlife just from your own deck.
The staff is truly what made this trip unforgettable. They went above and beyond to make sure that your time there was comfortable. The food was made on site for each meal, customizable for your allergies or your preferences, you can tell a lot of love was put in it.
We had a family of four staying in the hippo three tent, it was more than comfortable for all four of us. All of the basic toiletries are there - shampoo, conditioner, hairdryer, towels, etc. I do recommend bringing some sort of motion, sickness medication if you are prone to becoming sick from a lot of driving.
Hippo Lakes is right now about 5000 acres. You get to go out and explore multiple times during your stay. You can see most of the staple animals that you want to see in Africa there. Our itinerary also included two visits to a larger game reservation where you could see the big five. From there, we got to see the rest of the animals that hippo lakes can’t accommodate at the moment.
One of the things that makes hippo lakes so great are the Rangers. MJ, Shaun and Anton took a lot of time to explain things with each Game Drive. On the bigger game reservations that you visit, those rangers were great to help you see the animals. However, those Rangers never went in depth when it came to the little things. The hippo Lakes Rangers, would take the time to stop and explain everything as small as how a dung beetle mates, to something as large as organizing a night drive to see hippos outside of the lakes and explain their nighttime habits. I learned a lot and they were all very patient and making sure all of your questions were answered.
Overall, this was a magical stay. I would highly recommend booking your Safari trip via hippo Lakes.
