Matingwe Lodge is situated near Vaalwater in Limpopo. The thatch-roofed lodge and free-standing rooms are surrounded by indigenous garden. Bird life is plentiful! Sable antelope, and other plains game, roam the grounds. It is quite safe to walk the hiking trails on the reserve. While you will not need a 4x4 to reach Matingwe, a high clearance vehicle is advised. The plush, 4-star graded rooms, decorated to suit the South African safari setting, accommodate couples and families. While there will be no need for screens, a cosy, communal loft lounging space in the lodge is fitted with a TV. Meals are served in the restaurant in the lodge. Enjoy a sunny breakfast in the lapa overlooking the bushveld and dine by candlelight as you settle in for dinner later in the day. The bar is fully stocked, and the temperature-controlled cellar holds some of the best wines South Arica has to offer. Outdoors, a large firepit provides the setting for long, lazy conversations and the customary South African braai! In Summer, the rock pool and deck are popular with guests. In Winter, find a cosy nook in the living area, where a fire is always ablaze. Matingwe borders the larger Welgevonden Game Reserve, where the Big 5 roam the ultra-protected land. Guests are treated to guided Big 5 game drives in Welgevonden. Join an early morning or late afternoon drive, or both! You will not be disappointed by the sightings.

My girlfriend and I had a great stay at Matingwe Lodge. We were the only guests and were treated so well. Everything was tailored to our requests and all staff members were hospitable. Whatever we wanted, we got, and they truly made us feel at home.

The Lodge complied with all COVID-19 restrictions and made us feel at ease with the current pandemic.

It was really nice to watch the sables, warthogs and Elands roam around, straight off our bedroom patio door, even when lying in bed.

It would have received a 5/5 if I had not found that some of my food (that was said to be all home made by the chef) was from a local brand in a box from the freezer (crumbed fish) which I had found when looking for some ice. The food was more, I would say quantity over quality, as we were never short on meals, but it could have been better.

I would highly recommend visiting Matingwe, it's a really great getaway location to enjoy the private game reserve experience.

Thank you Matingwe for our great experience!

Guy, thank you for your review. I would just like to respond with regards to the fish, which did indeed come out of a box. You did say that you would bring your own kosher meat but you only brought meat for one night which left us a bit stuck on what to serve you the second night. Not having kosher meat on the premises; all that we had available was crumbed fish and so I do apologise for that. We have since spoken to our local supermarket and the good news is that they say they are able to order kosher meat for us, so it shouldn't be a problem in the future. All the best from Matingwe Lodge.

We were lucky enough to visit Matingwe for 3 nights and our visit was simply fantastic in all regards. The lodge itself is beautiful, with great rooms (amazing outdoor shower!), delicious food and stunning private grounds. Mark and Angela were excellent hosts, and really went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed ourselves. We had fantastic sightings on every game drive and even had the chance to do a walk in the reserve which allowed us to experience sights and sounds that you just don’t get when you’re in a vehicle.

Following our stay here, we moved to a different lodge in a different reserve and despite the second lodge being 50% more expensive, Matingwe was better in every single aspect. Our expectations were thoroughly exceeded and we can’t wait to return.

We stayed 2 nights at Matingwe before going back to Johannesburg It was perfect for us. Room very comfortable. We had great view ont the reserve and a wonderful outside shower. We organised meals at the Lodge. Breakfast was very good with a wide range of dishes served by the great terrasse. Staff were all very attentive, friendly and helpful. This lodge is ideal if you wanted to do daytrips into Reserve which the Lodge offers. The pool looked very inviting. The Lodge is situated in Welgevonden Reserve so not only do you have views over the animals in the Reserve, but animals roam round the lodge - It is awesome!
Recommend this Lodge for anyone!

My husband and myself have just spent a long weekend at Matingwe Lodge, this is a great little lodge it is quiet , clean and well run. The hosts Nolan and Shauna are very friendly and welcoming , we felt as though we have know them for years, the lodge was like home(without having to do any cooking etc) we felt very comfortable there. Shauna went out of her way to make sure all the guests were well looked after, she went out of her way to satisfy any dietary needs the guests might have had.
We thoroughly enjoyed a morning game drive with Gerhard, he is one of the most knowledgeable rangers we have experienced for many years. We saw 3 birds we have not seen before being a Grass Owl, a Striped Kingfisher and a little Bee-Eater as well as a sighting of a Lioness with 3 Cubs, not a good visual but being there was enough.
We will definitely return

Just returned from a fantastic 3 night stay at Matingwe. There is absolutely nothing that I can criticise about our experience. The accommodation and food was fantastic, the game drives were stunning, but most of all the welcome and attention from all our hosts was outstanding. Mark, Angela, Christine and Willem could not do enough for us and Mark and Willem’s knowledge and enthusiasm on the game drives was fantastic.
There was an abundance of often close quarter sightings of animals on all the game drives and every effort was made by Mark and Willem to make every drive a fantastic experience.
Thank you again to all at Matingwe and hopefully will return later this year.

Beautifully appointed chalets with everything you’d need during a stay, the units are close to the main building which has games and couch seating for groups.

The friendly and welcoming management and staff delivered service that made it feel like a home away from home.

We enjoyed breakfast out on the deck and dinner in the lodge building. The food was really delicious.

We did both game drives every day and saw multiple lion, rhino, and elephant and more.

We are booking and planning our return visit for next year.

Location: nice area with a lot of different animals. Nice walking route thru the private reserve.
Lodge: super nice decorated, nice and clean. Big room with a nice terrace and a view on animals. Bathroom beautiful interior. Outside shower, inside nice tiles a bit dark in the shower but shower is super.
Food: good breakfast with musli and warm breakfast. All fresh. Diner just perfect, taste delicious.
Stuff: nice, friendly, open to help. The couple who is running the lodge are so friendly and helpful open to talk, etc. Game drive: 2 minutes drive to the big five reserve. Guide is so funny well connected and organized. We were a bit unlucky with the weather, but we got rain poncho, and a super guide who made the best out of it. Saw a lot of animals and learned much about the area and the animals.
We felt very welcome at the lodge and will leave as friends.

This was our first of 4 stops at private reserves in South Africa and Botswana and are very thankful that our travel advisor chose Matingwe. Kurt our guide and Tanya his wife and lodge manager were superb, great service, great food, great lodging and great game drives. Kurt’s knowledge was amazing and he was so patient with our endless questions. We saw cheetah and lion families eating their kill, many, many different types of hoofed animals, cute groups of warthogs, jackals, baboons, many herds of elephants and even an aardvark out during the day. We were lucky to be in a very strong anti poaching reserve and saw the rhinos with horns. At the next reserve the rhinos no longer had horns. The terrain with its wheat coloured sand and huge rocks was really interesting and we were always waiting for a rock to wag its tail in the hopes it was another lion. My friend and I really enjoyed our mid game drive snack, wine and pee stops.

Choit and Tanya (spellings! sorry) were the absolute perfect host and game driver. Choit was one of the best drivers I have ever had; passionate about finding animals, but always letting them have their space. Really special.
Tanya greeted us and facilitated a wonderful and peaceful stay for us.
These guys had just had a run of full lodge weekends, and we were their only guests for our 2 nights, but they never ran out of smiles and the joy of sharing a beautiful peaceful safari lodge.
the BEST thing about Matingwe, is that it literally backs onto Welgevonden, so you are able to wander down to the gate amongst the sable between game drives.
It is so quiet, a really special place to stay.

Early morning we heard lion roars coming from the valley. With Marc, we quickly jumped into the land cruiser and followed the sound. Eventually we run into a mail lion setting his territory, and a bit later a second lion joint the scene. Where other game vehicles came, took pictures (lion: check) and left... mostly because they have fixed schedules for breakfast etc... Marc took the time and slowly followed the lions through the valley so we could really see the behavior and interaction between the two male lions. This impacted our breakfast and day planning but he saw the uniqueness of the situation. This truly was the highlight of hour trip to South Africa, and I pity the other people that only had 10 minutes and had to move on... Thanks Marc!
