An authentic farm hideaway, set against the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain, only 1 hour’s drive (75km) from Cape Town. Close enough to get to, yet a perfect place to get away from it all. A humble, rural retreat where you can quickly sweep away the stress of city living and enjoy wide open spaces and fresh air amid the vines on our working, family owned wine farm.

What a spoiled weekend away! Less than hour drive from Cape Town for ultimate farm breakaway. Welcomed with freshly baked sourdough bread, farm butter and eggs, as well as wine, Caperatief, tonic and rooibos tea from the farm and delectable rusks (think shortbread biscuit). And wood in supply for days for the firepit, fireplace, braai and outdoor cast iron baths (replenished by the amazing Blessing daily)
Beautiful small touches like wild flowers in the house and baths, fire starters wrapped individually almost too pretty to burn.
Great walks and many farm animals to visit (don't miss out on the foefie slide), but the highlight was the extended and welcoming wine tasting. #newbestfriends
Slept like sleeping beauty in huge king bed and quality bedding, and rooms came with warm water bottles and hairdryers.
We really did not need or want for anything. Cannot wait to go back in summer to enjoy the splash pool.
Thank you for a memorable weekend. x

We were blown away with this wonderful place and will be be back with our family for an extended stay. The rooms are very well kitted out and the fresh bread, butter and eggs with a chilled bottle of wine in the fridge was a wonderful warm welcome. this is a very special place and we loved out stay!

Semma was kind enough to let us book for only one night over a weekend and also allowed an early check in and late check out which basically cage us 24 hours here. We were welcomed with fresh bread and other farm products and a bonus of samples of their Caperitif and their very own tonic water. There's enough to see and do here to keep adults and children alike occupied and we look forward to return once wine tasting are once more allowed. And all this only 70 minutes drive from the centre of Cape Town.

Compact, effective conversion with good quality fixtures and fittings. Some mis-matches, however: micro wave but no hob despite pots and pans and coffee maker to use on one. Unable to use the braai since strong winds would have made it hazardous. Splash pool very refreshing.
Lovely to have a greasy loaf and a dish of butter, but would have been helpful to have known in advance that we didn’t have to bring this.
Having visited Riebeek Kasteel four years ago and drunk Swartland wines in the UK our main reason for staying at the silo was to develop our understanding of the local wine. Since AAB was a major pioneer in the development of the wine it seemed an obvious place to stay. We can only visit South Africa in February. We were travelling round having booked accommodation months in advance. It was only after we had paid in full that we found out that tastings are not available during the harvest period. Overseas visitors need to know about this in advance. Small wineries in Stellenbosch and Hemel-en-Arde valley did provide tastings.

Hi Catherine, thanks so much for your review. You are indeed correct in that we do not have a hot plate / hob in the Silo. In my correspondence to you in July I highlighted what was in the kitchenette and I do apologize if there was any miscommunication. We do keep some cooking utensils in the Silo, namely the items that can be used on the braai. Unfortunately mid-Feb is crunch time for us here in the cellar, and being a small family run winery both of our winemakers work flat out from the crack of dawn to late into the evenings. We do try to accommodate our guests as much as possible during this short window in the peak time, and if our winemakers are not available then either Charl or myself will happily walk guests through the cellar to see some of the action and pour some wine to taste. I sincerely regret that you did not have this opportunity, as we would have loved to show you around and certainly made a plan for you had you communicated this to me. I hope this did not deter from your overall stay, and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the pool and our freshly baked home made bread - while it's intended as a pleasant surprise on check in I do understand your point that some people will prefer knowing about the bread in advance, and we'll take this on board along with your other feedback. Best regards Semma

My husband and two small children (aged 1 and 3) spent an amazing weekend on the farm. Semma and her team were incredible and made sure every detail was taken care of. We arrived to farm freshly baked bread in our room as well as rusks, museli and a delish bottle of chilled wine in our fridge. Evette, who is the animal manager, delighted our kids with pony rides, a visit to see the baby budgies, bunny and pig visits. On Saturday we enjoyed a delicious lunch of fresh salads, lasagne and home made ice-cream under the trees on the grass over looking the wine farm. My 3 year old loved swimming in the pool and we enjoyed having our own private braai. The hospitality was amazing and we will definitely be back.

We headed out to the Swartland to explore the world of Chenin and discovered a completely unique wine experience of which AA Badenhorst is a huge part of. The Wine Makers Cottage is nestled right in the middle of the farm and vineyards, we arrived to find fresh eggs from the chickens on the farm, freshly baked bread, rooibos also grown and picked there and so many extras that made us feel right at home! The decor and linen was exceptional, huge king sized beds, all bath&body products were amazing and locally sourced. We spent hours in the Wine barrel Hot Tub overlooking the valley. The restaurant does proper Napoletana pizzas, home made ice cream and breakfasts of dreams. What an absolute gem, we will definitely be back.

we were tasting wines in the area and stayed overnight in their Melkammer Suite which was beautifully furnished and designed. It had all the small and necessary details in place, a powerful hairdryer for ladies, for comfort and ambiance an open fireplace, an enormous king bed with top linen, cosy kitchen and to remind us of our farm stay we had a tasty loaf of bread with fresh butter and a basket of eggs waiting for us, plus a nice bottle of Chenin Blanc in the fridge. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the wine tasting by the maker, Haneke, we drank some exquisite Chenin in the single vineyard cellar.

Kalmoesfontein ticks all the boxes- it's an authentic, rustic working wine farm, with friendly farm animals (and super friendly owners!) roaming around and you get a real sense of having the whole place to yourself, yet complimented with 5-star accommodation and incredible attention to detail. Beautiful luxurious linen and so many extra's such as freshly baked farm bread and farm eggs in the kitchen, and access to the numerous fruit trees growing in the garden. But the highlight is definitely the outdoor hot tub and beautiful swimming pool! Oh, and the views over the valley! Cant recommend it enough, it's an absolute treasure!

Kalmoesfontein Farm is the absolute perfect getaway just outside of Cape Town. It is far enough from the city to feel like a real escape, but close enough to allow for a quick spur of the moment escape. The rooms are exceptionally decorated, comfortable and simply appointed - but with every little luxury you need to relax and unwind. Be sure to time your trip to coincide with host Charl's pizza evenings and you will never look at another pizza quite the same way ever again - he has redefined what is great in a pizza and it is something to behold. The farm boast swimming pools and dams and all sorts of fun escapes for the kids and naturally some the country's finest wines for the adults. Book now, even if it is for next year - you will not be disappointed.

AA Badenhorst stay ticked every box for us. Firstly, what a beautiful place and tasteful accommodation!!! Communication and service was excellent, the winemakers cottage was kitted with everything we needed and it all worked perfectly, the beds and linen felt luxurious, we loved using the pool in the day and hot tub at night. The extras provided were also really thoughtful and generous- freshly baked sourdough bread, farm eggs, butter, milk, and delicious rusks. We also really enjoyed walking around the farm and felt completely safe in the space. I would love to go back soon and highly recommend this place.
