We were originally looking to stay at the Hermitage, Mount Cook as part of our South Island tour but it seemed very expensive. We decided instead to go for one night at Mount Cook Village and another at Matuka Lodge in Twizel (where we would have liked to stay longer but one night was unfortunately the only vacancy we could get). Matuka Lodge is a magical property set in its own grounds just outside the town. Jo and Peter are wonderful hosts and made us feel immediately at home. Having done a fair bit of hiking in the morning before we left Mount Cook we arrived a bit tired but were revived by a welcome cup of tea served in our room – watching ducks on the pond and the occasional jumping trout. The room was beautifully appointed and we slept like tops in the hugely comfortable king size (at least) bed. We would thoroughly recommend Matuka Lodge and would love to go back some day for a longer stay.

We arrived to a very warm and genuine welcome. We have stayed two nights and absolutely loved this place. We have the run of the Lodge and access to lots of goodies from fruit, cookies, teas and drinks. An honesty bar is run for additional drinks and this works very well. All very relaxed. You come and go as you please.

The bedroom was extremely comfortable with luxury bedding and quality toiletries. Great views out to the mountains.

Breakfasts are super with no request being too much trouble.

The hosts absolutely make this place and are always on hand to assist with anything you need, and they enjoy the chat and conversation with their guests.

We will miss this place and them.

This is an absolute gem of a lodge. It is small (4 double rooms) and peaceful, with wonderful views across to the Southern Alps. It is a short drive from Mount Cook, several outstanding lakes and lots of great hikes and cycle trails. The room we stayed in was lovely, big comfortable bed, private deck overlooking a lovely pond. Very clean with lots of extra touches - lots of books on the area, free home made cake, complimentary drinks, free tea and coffee. The hosts could not be more welcoming, warm and generous. They know the area and are full of information about what to do. Our only regret is that we did not stay longer. Wonderful place!

We had a large beautifully, furnished room with wonderful views across the pond to the mountains. The location is perfect for exploring the Mackenzie Country and the wonderful walks from Mt Cook village. The breakfast is delicious as were the extras, the welcome drink, the homemade cake and the endless supply of cookies. Best of all is the hospitality of hosts Jo and Peter who are so welcoming and friendly and will help however they can from booking a local restaurant, to sending on personal items left behind!
Thank you so much for making our two night stay so great.

What a lovely place! Super comfortable and luxurious room…little sitting area, great bed, large closet area for luggage/clothes, and private deck with superb views of a backyard pond complete with ducks and lovely gardens as well as mountains.
The bathroom was really magnificent with a huge walk in shower and a really delightfully decadent spa tub. All the soaps were fragrant and the fluffy warmed towels felt great after a long soak in the tub.
The hosts were friendly, helpful, and very accommodating. They made sure we had a welcome drink and snacks upon arrival (who knew fruitcake could be so delicious?!) as well as a dinner reservation at a local, very popular, very full restaurant.
The breakfast was superb! Artist flat white, yoghurt, eggs, toast, and the best mushrooms I have ever eaten.
Great directions to the B&B were emailed, safe parking right outside the door.
Yes, a splurge but totally worth it!

Way off the beaten track, this place is a haven for a time of relaxation and calm. Beautiful views of the mountains and a large pond where you can watch the ducks and wildlife.
The rooms are light, airy, spotlessly clean and have a luxury feel with high end toiletries provided. Home made cookies, cake, a variety of nibbles and hot drinks accessible to guests all day, plus divine drinking water, free of chemicals.
Mel and Mark are do warm, welcoming and enthusiastic!
Breakfast, freshly cooked to order is divine, tables set out on a communal basis which gives the opportunity to share travel stories from around the world.
The bed was SO comfortable, again with quality bedding, great attention to detail. Just lovely.
Only slight niggle would be check in and out times, checking in at 3pm and checkout at 10am. I understand the need to service rooms, but essentially losing 20% of your day - seems commonplace but doesn't mean it sits well.

Matuka Lodge was one of our favorite accommodations while traveling in New Zealand. Libby and Geoff are so welcoming and do everything to ensure that your stay in relaxing and comfortable. The view from each room and the living room are breathtaking and I wish I could wake up to it everyday. The quality of everything from the linens and towels to the TV and heater/AC unit were all in great condition and worked as expected. If you're looking for things to do, Libby and Geoff provide a great guide for what to do and where to go and they're happy to talk to you in person as well to give more detail. We definitely recommend Matuka Lodge to anyone traveling through Twizel and hope to visit again soon!

Wow! Love the Matuka Lodge!!!

From the moment we walked in the door, we were warmly greeted by Mel, the most lovely, warm and engaging host. She made us feel right at home the entire trip. We stayed for five nights and were treated to a spectacular breakfast by her charming husband, Mark.

Words can’t express how awesome this place is! We loved meeting the other traveling guests and visiting about our countries during breakfast. Even though this is a lodge/ bed and breakfast, there is a large shared space that makes you feel like home. We never felt cramped or like we didn’t have our own privacy. The individual rooms had EVERYTHING WE NEEDED, down to heated towel bars, robes and houseshoes!

We were truly sad to leave. Particularly because we had made a fun friendship with Mel and Mark, the lovely hosts.

Mel was so helpful with our daily and evening plan ideas and even made reservations for us several nights for restaurants. If you think you don’t need a reservation to some of these restaurants, you are wrong!

Again, 5 Stars and Huge shoutout to Matuka Lodge! They are getting it right and Mark and Mel are the ultimate folks!

I can't say enough about my time at the Matuka Lodge, aside from the fact that it was too short! What a truly lovely property, hosted by two truly lovely people. Geoff and Libby went above and beyond to ensure I enjoyed my stay at this beautiful property - helping with restaurant recommendations, showing me around the property and even making a special breakfast for me to ensure I was able to eat something before I left for my hike at 6am the next morning. If you are looking for a beautiful retreat close to Mt. Cook on the South Island, this is the place for you. I would highly recommend this location to anyone and look forward to returning in the future.

My wife and I loved our 2 night stay at The Matuka Lodge on 10/14-10/15! Mel, the lodge manager was fantastic! The breakfast she prepared each day was wonderful and she went out of her way to cover anything we needed. Just one example was when we came back from a rainy walk at Mt Cook.
She gave us a clothes drying rack and a warm place to put our shoes to dry. She is also great to talk to and helped us with dinner choices and things to see and do in addition to what we had planned.
The lodge has great views of the mountains across the pond and the room was spotless! It was one of our favorite places to stay while vacationing in NZ. We wished we could have stayed longer!
