A wonderful authentic Ayurvedic resort to rejuvenate your body and soul. I alway feel well taken care of by all the caring and loving staff at this beautiful resort.
Starting with the patience and flexibility of Ms Samanmalie in the reservation dept because of my ever changing arrival date.
Special thanks to Dr Pushpa for keeping me healthy with her magic potions & herbs she prescribed for the last for 20yrs I have not had a sniffle!
Amesh, wonderful yoga instructor.
I leave there feeling rejuvenated both physically and mentally.
Thanks to the hardworking housekeeping staff with their creativity that puts a smile on my face every time I walked into my room and seeing flower petals on my bed 🌸 🌺
The kitchen and restrauant staff are excellent and the variety of food is so delicious & mouthwatering just the thought of the buffet. 😋
The reception desk alway accommodating and arranged car service into weligama town that cost less than what the Tuk Tuk drivers charged . The tailor is wonderful lady.

Love the saltwater pools and the pool man for the upkeep of that area
Love all the flower arrangements.

I am so grateful there is such a wonderful place I can escape to year after year.
Lastly, many many thanks to Ms Mily &
Ms Githa for operating such a wonderful paradise. 💕 💗

Looking forward to return again
next year ! Yvonne

What a lovely place, it's amazing with a great view at the ocean. Beautiful rooms with high ceilings, large wooden balcony doors The Ayurveda treatment is heaven.
The food is all natural and healthy, very delicious. The best part is the Salt water pool and yoga.

I would thoroughly recommend this resort to anyone!

If you look for a healing re -rejuvenating experience this place is the one!
Everything from the rooms to the treatments, the food, the environment and all the staff who does everything to make the stay to the most fantastic experience- and they succeed.
My stay at Barberyn Ayurvedic Resort was over all expectations.
The room in Waves was beautiful and with the view over the sea and the sound from the natural rainforest with all inherent animals who contributed to deep relaxation & calmness

The treatments with all the staff was so professional & caretaking in such a loving way.
Food was so delicious- every day, like the best resturant in town.
The service was fantastic. Intresting adventures to oldest temple in Sri Lanka.
Over all was everything perfect, I will definitely go back!

A wonderful and authentic retreat, lovely location next to a great (surf) beach, two pools (one with saltwater) and lots of garden area. The ayurveda treatments were lovely, I just felt a bit bad for all the massage therapists as they seem to have long working days. I gave them tips at the end but agree with a previous review that giving everyone name tags could personalize things more. You get close to the treatment staff who are amazing and very caring.
The Waves section (new and still under construction) where I stayed is nice but the views from the balcony can be limited due to the way the building is constructed. Some balconies have excellent views but some don’t. The noise from the work at Waves can also be disturbing sometimes.
The food is amazing, absolutely delicious! I guess due to COVID the buffet is still behind a plastic sheet and the staff fills your plate after pointing which dishes you want.
Everything is well organised but a bit rusty here and there. Some refreshing of decor, paint and style would do well at Beach. The reception administration could also do with some modernizing (it took many attempts to pay with a credit card) and staff is not always well versed in English. They were lovely but management could invest in English language training.
It would be great if the store sold valuable Ayurvedic products and food items but this is currently not the case.
It was great to get a set of herbs to continue taking after leaving. Knowing what is in the herbs and liquids that are given during the treatments would have been valuable to me but there are no ingredients on the packages. I missed a bit of attention to detail, esp in terms of learning and gaining insights on what you take. The two classes were okay though a bit monotonous and generic.
All in all a wonderful experience for a very decent price. The fellow guests make the stay extra wonderful, many single travelers make it that you’ve always got someone to talk to and share stories with.

Despite the UK government essential service only advise we all had a great time . Wish we could have spent more time at this special resort.

We had great ayurveda panchakarma 3 weeks retreat at this place. Never been before and despite several ayurveda retreats in the past in Sri Lanka and India never heard about them. We where wondering if we should share this with others and it will for sure bring more people to this place however they definitely deserve and it would not be far to claim this for oursleve 😊🙏. The hotel, the ayurveda food and special spices, as the treatments are superb and make the panchakarma almost to easy to do. The are building a new wing and just finisher the Wave wing which we definitely recommend.
After 3 weeks we feel fully back in balance, energized, relax and 10 years younger. Definitely a high recommendation !!!

This is my time to Barberyn, but my first time to this hotel. I've previously stayed only at the Barberyn Reef (the "Reef"), the cheaper sister hotel of this one, but this time I split my holiday between this hotel (the "Beach") and the Reef, so I'll briefly list the differences if you're having trouble choosing which to go to.

Accommodation: No doubt the Beach is more modern, with better bathrooms and every room looks out onto the jungle. The Reef is the original hotel from the 70s and partially-renovated after the tsunami, and has a mix of great rooms and not-so-great rooms. But I don't come here for 5 star resort facilities so I prefer the more "rustic" Reef, and best of all the Beachfront Rooms are literally beach front. At the Beach, the resort is set up on a hill 5-10 minutes walk from the beach.

Ayurvedic Treatments: I found the health centre at the Beach to be run much tighter than that at the Reef. Everything seemed cleaner and newer, appointments ran to their exact timing, and even the massages seemed to be more syncronised than those at the Reef. Again the Reef is the original ayurvedic centre, so it's a little more rough around the edges, and generally had a more relaxed feel, which meant I could easily swap around my treatment timings, which wasn't particularly appreciated at the Beach. But the staff at both are warm, friendly and very skilled in their trade. Interestingly despite having the same conditions, the doctors at each resort prescribed me different oils and medicines, but the effect was still amazing.

Food: Identical, although the Reef is a bigger hotel so there was a slightly-larger selection at the buffet.

Amenities: Personally, I love the fact the Reef is right on the beach, so you can sleep to the sound of crashing waves at night, and get from the beach to your next massage in 1 minute. The Beach is set up a hill in a jungle, which is spectacular in itself but to get down to the beach is a bit of an expedition compared to the Reef.

Activities: Both resorts offer excursions to tea plantations, Galle and other local sights. Both offer yoga, but the Beach's yoga programme is more regular (twice a day) and is set either on a hill overlooking the beach, or on the roof of the main building surrounded by jungle, which was an advantage over the Reef.

Crowd: I think because the Beach is considerably more expensive than the Reef (the Reef's most expensive Beachfront Room was cheaper than the cheapest standard Beach room), the guests are perhaps a little more formal. There seemed to be a slightly younger crowd at the Reef, and more atmosphere in general in the dining room and the resort. Travelling solo I found the Reef much easier to chat to and meet people.

Location: The Reef is on the west coast and took about an hour less to reach than the Beach. The Beach is on the south coast which is a bit more touristy than the west, so more pleasant to explore if you want to leave the resort.

Summary: To me, Barberyn Reef is more relaxed and friendly, and has the prime location right on the beach (which is protected by a reef so always calm for swimming). Yes it is a little rough around the edges, but that adds to the charm. The ayurvedic centre and pharmacy are the originals, so I feel as if i'm getting the full authentic srilankan ayurvedic experience. If perhaps the beach isn't so important, and you prefer a more modern and formal hotel, the Beach might be for you. Either way, you will leave feeling lighter, healthier, and energised - I can't recommend their treatments highly enough!

NOT a holiday more like a prison….

Buyer beware:
1. Most people who come here are Germans who are totally sold on Ayurveda solving all their health problems, so if you are not convinced this can make conversation difficult
2. The treatments are pretty restrictive: most of the time you are not supposed to swim or sunbathe, and there are food restrictions associated with some.
3. Little effort is made by management to integrate single people. There is no communal table, and if you are shy I would recommend going on one of their organized bus tours to meet people as you can feel pretty lonely and bored after a couple of days, as there is absolutely nothing to do at night.
4. The massages are OK but no more: the practitioners are very sweet and friendly but htey follow a basic routine and treatments are not really tailored to each patient, after a week they feel repetitive. I have had better Ayurvedic massage in the UK. Furthermore the oils combined with the heat made me break out in spots which the doctors insisted on treating with a horrible smelling green gunge (which didn’t work, although my steroid cream did). There os no osteopathy in the centre to help with musculo skeletal pain and the standard of acupuncture is poor.
5. The treatment centre is very basic: looks more like a sanatorium than a spa and therefore not very relaxing, felt more like an Eastern European bath house pre integration
6. If you want to lose weight forget it. Although the food police is always there to remind you what you shouldn’t be eating, most of the curries, although delicious are cooked in coconut milk and fattening. However if you can escape on the non buffet nights do so as the set meals are pretty awful, I recommend the gorgeous fish restaurant on Mirissa beach.
7. There is very little exercise on offer. The “gym” is a stuffy room with no windows or aircon (just a small fan) with few and antiquated equipment. If you want to do yoga you have to get up for a 6 am session, or miss the sunset in the evening, and you have to pick your teacher carefully. One is good as there are lots of stretches (but not still not much cardiovascular), the other is focused on relaxation/meditation/breathing ( I couldn’t work out whether he meant toes or thoughts when he said “focus on your thoes…").
8. The surroundings: the swimming pool is nice and the gardens are OK but there is a horrible prison type wall at the bottom of the path to the main beach which closes at 7pm. You get hassled by touts on the beach with the fishermen on stilts; the other smaller beach has fierce rip tide currents a lot of the time and a whole family of dogs, not very healthy.
9. Forget sleeping at night. There was no aircon in my room, the fan was extremely noisy, and with temperature reaching 36 degrees the heat is pretty unbearable. Add the jungle noises, which keep going throughout the night, and the bird chorus which starts at 5 am , and you may have to arrange a holiday to recover from this one.

So, sorry all Barberyn lovers but I have visited many spas and treatment centres. I went hoping for improvements in back and neck pain and gained no benefit; I ended up going back to a great osteopath back home who fixed the problem in a couple of sessions. So I did not feel spending over £2000 on this particular offering was justified.

Responded 23 Nov 2012
Dear Anne, Many thanks for staying with us and for taking the time to give your feedback. I am sorry that you were not convinced by the treatment and care that you received at Barberyn. We really care about our guest's experiences - so I will attempt to reply. It is very true that those used to regular spa resorts, may find Barberyn different and unusual. This is because Barberyn is indeed an Ayurveda health center, not a spa. For that reason our qualified doctors take their jobs extremely seriously. This includes asking guests to follow their instructions closely, on occasion to keep out of the sun, stick to particular diets, drink unusual herbal decoctions and undergo herbal applications. Regarding weight loss: Guests are usually asked at the start of their stay whether they would like to lose weight. Therefore if you ask for it, there is a special diet allocated to you which avoids the delicious coconut curries! If you were not offered the diet option, I am very sorry. Again, due to the Ayurveda treatment, we do not encourage air conditioning in the bedrooms. The treatments work best when your natural body temperature is maintained, one of the reasons why, after some treatments, guests are encouraged not to go swimming. I would like to propose starting a "singles" table, where single travelers can sit together, should they want to. Many thanks for the suggestion. To summarize, I feel that Barberyn did not meet up to your expectations and I think this could in part be due to the fact that you might not be convinced by Ayurveda medicine but we are really sorry that you did not enjoy the experience. You are welcome back in our resorts at any time. Kindest regards, Dorothea

After reading all the positive reviews here on trip advisor I decided to try out this Ayurveda Resort this time around. Unfortunately it fell short from my expectations I had from my stay.
Most of the visitors at this resort are staying for an extended period of time and seems to return every year. This has triggered the management to try to satisfy this group of guests and indirect created a system with first and second “class” guests. As a short time guest you are getting the “leftover” and “unwanted” treatment times in the health center that makes it impossible to join any of the complementary daily trips, which are arranged by the resort.
The restaurant serves very nice and tasty dishes and you have a very big variety of dishes to choose from, both if you are on a normal or special diet. You have always access to one of the doctors in the restaurant in case you need any help regarding which food you should choose.
I stayed in a Deluxe Room and I am sorry to say that it was not any “Deluxe” about it at all. Very basic and lacking most of the items you are used to find in any hotel from middle class hotels and above. What I really missed in my room was a safe box and a kettle so you could make yourself a cup of tea in the early morning. My room was filled with insects of different kind, both known and unknown to me. I think the most annoying thing was the thousands of ants exploring everything, inclusive my toothbrush, which forced me to store all of my toiletries in my bas when I didn’t use them. The fan in the room is under dimensioned and was not able to send a breeze through the mosquito net covering the bed.
The grounds are very nice and comfortable to stroll around in during daytime, but as it lacks any lightning on most of the tracks it makes it very unsafe to take a walk in the evening after sunset.
I suggest anyone who plans to go here for treatments to bring a lot of books with them to read, as it is not so much to do in the evenings after the supper.
After discussing my concerns with the management some of the issues were solved but most of them were unsolved during my whole stay, inclusive the ants.

Dear Hakan Many thanks for your review. I am interested to hear your complaints and will look into them. I have a feeling that the problem about treatment times may stem from groups booking into the hotel together. As they all want to take the treatments at the same time I think that this might block off a period larger than normal. I quite see that this could be annoying if it means that you cannot go on the excursions or take part in yoga. I would defintitely recommend asking the team to rearrange your slot if this is the case but I will look into this matter so that it is easier for people to change slots if they want to. Regarding the ants. One of the lovely things about Barberyn is that it is right in the middle of the jungle but it does mean that we are also surrounded by wildlife. Toothpaste, fruit, anything sweet attracts ants annoyingly so should be put away. The rooms do not have kettles in them but all guests are given a flask of tea to drink in your room whenever you want. You can collect the flask of tea or hot water from the restaurant and guests are encouraged to drink as much herbal tea as possible during the stay. The rooms do not have TV's. The focus is on peaceful rest and relaxation and so we try to encourage guests to totally switch off, forget their computers etc and focus on rejuvanation in mind, body and spirit. I do hope this answers some of your questions. I am sorry you were disappointed with your stay. Kindest regards, Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts.

I don't think you need any vaccinations to go there. I've been going there regularly for 15 years, without vaccinations. There is no malaria, so no pills to be taken, either.

Yes, this is true. You ware a sarong or a towel in the common area, but you have only underwear on when you're in the bath. The bath are in the individual cabins though, the entry closed with a curtain. Same for the showers

There is Wi fi in public areas, and not in the rooms. We encourage guests to use the time at Barberyn to focus on the healing that comes from within, so guests keep their internet usage to a minimum.

The weather in Sri Lanka is not very different to Thailand - Bangkok that is, as Chiang Mai is cooler. It is a warm climate all year round. Both resorts have only a few air-conditioned rooms. Both resorts are already quite full, so if you wish to stay at Barberyn Beach in February you will have to check with the reservation team (via web site) soon. Geetha property Representative
