The Richardson Hotel boasts a clean and tranquil atmosphere with well-appointed rooms that many guests appreciate. However, the service has received mixed reviews, with some travelers experiencing inconsistencies that mar their overall impression. Cleanliness is a strong suit, with the property often being commended for its tidiness. In contrast, amenities leave much to be desired, with reports of missing features such as minibars and unreliable restaurant services. Room quality has also been a source of frustration due to booking inaccuracies and maintenance issues. Consequently, several guests question the hotel's value, feeling the costs outweigh the benefits offered.

We booked a 2 night stay at the Richardson Hotel to witness the total eclipse spectacular. Although the eclipse itself was indeed spectacular, I have to say it’s not a word I would use to describe our experience at the hotel. However, driving up to the hotel building does have a certain wow factor, with its impressive exterior that carries on with the interior once you enter the hotel itself. So , so far so good , however this is where the positives end and the overall performance of the hotel management comes into question. We arrived at a somewhat small checkin desk that was unmanned , we waited patiently for several minutes but still no one came. There was however two staff members stood very close at the entrance to the bar/ restaurant door, where brunch was being served. Eventually one of the staff members came over to us and explained that someone would be with us soon. By now a significant line had formed and you could feel the tension in the air. A short while after there was a sigh of relief as the front desk attendant appeared. With no apology forthcoming we started the check in process. We were then informed that our rooms would not be ready until 4 pm , no major issues we thought , we would just pop to the hotel bar for a couple of drinks and relax whilst we waited . Unfortunately our hopes of having some refreshments at the bar were quickly dashed as the bar did not open on a Sunday after 1.00 pm , or indeed on a Monday and Tuesday . This turned out to be the biggest disappointment of all. We could not understand why , when the hotel is full with guests, here to enjoy the eclipse the following day , they did not have a hotel bar open . The hotel policy is to close the bar and restaurant on Sunday,Monday and
Tuesday. This clearly needs addressing as this is just not acceptable. We were given a list of places we could go to get a drink and food, all were a good walk away from the hotel. The staff overall were friendly and accommodating.I do feel however there should be some kind of management training where they could enhance their customer service skills to a more professional standard. A staff uniform would also provide an overall look of quality and professionalism, something that was lacking throughout. The breakfast experience was also disappointing. A continental breakfast was the only one on offer with pre packaged items placed out with no real inspiration or quality. Disappointing to say the least , so much so we decided to venture out ( again !) to have our breakfast. Overall this has not been a favourable experience which is reflected in my review, it’s a fantastic building with so much potential, the rooms are clean , well designed and comfortable. High ceilings and period features throughout, the hotel really is unique but it’s easy to see its lacking in operational experience, being such a new hotel. I feel it needs some major changes to the inner workings of the hotel management and training of its employees. Would I return? Maybe, but definitely not on a Sunday !

This former building for the insane turned hotel is located within a campus still dealing with patients with mental health and addiction challenges. For this reason alone we never felt entirely at ease here.

The building is simply stunning having been sympathetically restored and retaining many of its original features. One could almost feel the presence of inpatients and staff busying through the long wide corridors and other public areas. There is a very interesting museum on the ground floor giving great insight into its history and transformation, and huge credit to all those public and private organisations and people whose passion, talent, commitment and financing brought this part of this magnificent structure back life. There is still much more to do with two thirds of the building still in a state of disrepair but hopefully the turnaround story will continue.

In fairness, we were only in Buffalo for the purpose of my daughter sitting the NY State Bar exams so it was not a pleasure trip as such.

However, during our stay, we could not help thinking that the hotel was underachieving and could be so much better than it is. For example, the restaurant, Cucini, never seemed to be open. There are a good variety of restaurants in the neighbourhood and we loved Daniela’s opposite the hotel grounds. The hotel staff kept talking about the complimentary continental breakfast - usually code for it isn’t up to much - and it really wasn’t. The same pastries, the same egg frittata, granola, juices, weak coffee etc which became so tedious by the 3rd day that we no longer bothered. And all self serve in a dreary windowless room more akin to what you’d find in a youth hostel. For the cost of the stay here, we would’ve expected a good and varied selection of fresh foods served in the restaurant.

The bedrooms are a good size, well appointed and the beds are very comfortable. We would’ve appreciated a mini fridge but there was not one. The shower leaked badly onto the bathroom floor as the sealing had worn so needed attention. Housekeeping was sometimes non existent but the housekeeping staff were very sweet and friendly.

In summary, the hotel is definitely worth a visit for the history and museum but we would not recommend staying here for the prices they charge.

Dear Guest, Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us at The Richardson and taking the time to provide your feedback. We appreciate your kind words and advice. The restaurant recently underwent a change and is no longer Cucina, but is it The Richardson Bar. We don't have food options on Mondays and Sundays, however that is changing as of this coming week. We are also working adamantly on getting a mini fridge in each room (however mini fridges are available at the front desk upon request) and on revamping our breakfast options. Thanks again for choosing to stay with us and we hope to see you again in the near future!

My husband and I booked three nights at the Richardson Hotel from April 7th - 10th (to view the eclipse). We booked a junior suite months in advance to ensure a "nice room". Instead, our junior suite was an ordinary room with a hotel fridge and a microwave, AND NO closets or drawers. We had to live out of our suitcases for 3 days! The housekeeping staff said it was the worst room on the floor and we should complain. We did complain about it numerous times, since we paid a premium price for a junior suite, but the hotel staff had no response to our complaints. We very much enjoyed the hotel and the grounds. However, our room did not even come close to being a suite, but definitely had a "suite price tag".

I was on an architecture tour in the area and the group stayed here for two nights. The site is a former "insane asylum" and I must say, it was unique. Rooms are huge and comfortable. Unfortunately there is only continental breakfast (which was good) but no bar or dinner service. Away from downtown Buffalo, but close to other cultural location in Buffalo. If you're looking for a unique place to stay, the Richardson is it!

Albeit a small room, at 249.00/night, we expected a chair to read by or to watch tv, a refrigerator, and sop in the shower soap container! The breakfast was an embarrassment. The room was small, no refrigerated items (e.g. yogurt), and no waffle iron or warmed eggs, potatoes, etc. In all honesty have never seen a breakfast so ...unworthy, let alone for a first class hotel.

Dinner was at best OK. Drinks and entree arrived at the same time - not conducive to environment. Yes, menu made relatively clear that entees were stand alone dishes - no 'dinners' (i.e. no veggies!), but not bread with a pasta dish!

Yes - clean, airy, and architeturally a wonder.

Would not return!

The architecture of the hotel is magnificent! We were upgraded to a lovely suite - bedroom and bathroom on one level and a complete living room six steps up, with very high ceilings and interesting lights. This is one of the few hotels I’ve stayed in that had adequate plugs for devices and good lighting. The walls are so thick that I didn’t even hear a thunderstorm during the night. The public areas are even more beautiful. The vintage and contemporary photos of Buffalo are the best tourist promotion for the city that I have ever seen. The hallways are as wide as many rooms with interesting ancient-looking doors and crannies.

The area is great for walking just across the street from two art museums and the Olmsted-designed Delaware Park. It’s also within walking distance of coffee shops and other independently owned businesses.

There were a few glitches with the hotel, however. Internet service cut out a few times. The hotel (built as an asylum in the 1870’s) is huge with multiple interconnected buildings, locked doors in odd places, curved hallways. But signage inside the hotel is terrible! It took us a while to even figure out how to get to the lobby. And I think the shower door was installed on the wrong side. When the shower was on with the shower door closed, water formed a lake on the bathroom floor.

I hardly ever leave negative reviews for small local businesses, but my experience with the Richardson was so bad that I feel morally obligated to share it with others in case anyone is considering staying with them for an important event.

In December of 2023 I reserved a special room with a King-sized bed for my wedding night which was 8-2-24. I suggested all of my out of town family and friends stay in the hotel which I have always found really impressive and wanted to experience.

On 8-1-24, the day before my wedding, I got an email from the Richardson telling me they had overbooked and were transferring me to another hotel, miles away. This was obviously devastating news. I responded right away and called them. The woman who answered my call told me there was nothing they could do, they had overbooked by 30 rooms (who DOES THAT?!, how irresponsible!). I cried and asked to speak with someone else, who eventually told me they would reinstate my room and bump someone else from my family.

When I went to check in that night they told me they had no more rooms with king beds, so my husband and I spent our wedding night sleeping in two small separate beds.

To be clear, I didn't just request a room with a king sized bed, I requested and reserved and paid for a specific special room with a king bed to make our wedding night special.

On top of all this, they charged us the same price they quoted us for the King Corner room.

All of that said, the room we had was very nice and clean, and the hotel itself was just as impressive on the inside as it was on the outside. So if you are traveling alone and/or don't mind the possibility of being bumped last minute to another hotel then it was a cool place to stay. But I wouldn't count on them holding your reservation for anything meaningful or important to you.

My wife and I traveled to Buffalo for my aunt’s 90th birthday we made reservations at the Richardson Hotel ( 400 Forest Ave) the old mental hospital. After traveling all day we arrived on June 26 2024 to a room with an air conditioner that did not work the window in our room did not open the temperature in our room was over 80 degrees, We complained and requested a different room, we were told no other room was available but that they could provide us with a fan which they did, we both had a miserable nights sleep, the next morning I was going to take a shower and noticed tooth paste on the bottom of the tub, apparently the guest before brushed his or her teeth in the bathtub. But at any rate the bathtub was not cleaned. We complained and then checked out we went to another hotel. If any of my friends or relatives are traveling to Buffalo we don’t recommend this hotel. Stay somewhere else..

We recently visited the hotel for the weekend. The hotel is a beautifully recently renovated historic building and it looks gorgeous. The issue is the staff and food. The front desk staff are aloof and unfriendly, both at arrival and departure. A 2 star hotel trying to be a 4 star. No welcome, no how was your stay, on the phone, etc.
We had drinks at the bar and ate in the restaurant both of which we would not do again. The bar was small and about half full when we arrived during happy hour. Bar tender looked past us several times before I had to approach the bar for service. Drinks were good, but over priced and no happy hour discount was provided, table water was warm and service just not consistent.
We then had dinner in the dinning room. It is a Italian restaurant trying to be high end and failing miserably. Again, not busy, but service was slow, dirty dishes left on the table between courses, and no follow up. Portion size was very disappointed, one pasta dish wasn less than 1/2 cup of food for 25$ No bread, or water refills. An no espresso machine at an Italian restaurant. Charging the white table cloth prices requires white table cloth service and this was definelty not at that level. A new hotel that needs a lot of staffing training and Food and Beverage upgrade.

The rooms were very modern- similar to any chain hotel, which was not expected. There was much more personality in the public spaces though. The bed was very comfortable. It would have helped if they included a portfolio in the room with info on the hotel and a map. Note for travelers- there is no mini fridge and no room service. The "made to order" breakfast is a coffee counter with bagels etc., not a sit-down restaurant with omelets. The restaurant in the evening was expensive but the food was very good. They don't charge to the room, so bring your wallet. The restaurant is not open on Sundays so plan ahead. I was not able to book the tour they offer. It must be interesting. However one could stay at a cheaper hotel and still sign up for the tour. For the price I expected a 4 star experience, but this is a 3.
