The hotel has a nice little pool area with a bar staffed by mostly disinterested bar keeps. Sorry but especially the local ladies were the least interested in helping you and several times I ordered food that never came. There is a small lagoon behind the hotel which isn't off the charts snorkeling but if you go out a bit you can see some fish and coral. Good place if you have young ones as there is no real current or wave breaks. Caution it is chilly getting in as we found out the fresh water from the mountains goes directly into the lagoon so chilly getting in
Overall this is a simple property, if you're trying to impress your fiance to marry you I would look up coast to other places, if you want a simple hotel that gives you quick access to everything in Kona Town this works. I will probably end up back there as the points to stay here are nearly 50% less than others on the island

From that moment, our holiday started for real and we enjoyed our stay at the King Kam. Our view was fabulous and we even got to enjoy the hotel’s luau from our balcony! The room had all mod cons, including dual sinks (always much appreciated to avoid minor fist fights with my husband!)
The buffet breakfast was excellent and included in our price which made the hotel quite a good deal. We liked the small beach area and always managed to secure some beach chairs and an umbrella. The hotel might want to rethink charging $150 for the cabanas as during our stay, we never saw a single one occupied so they are really a waste of space at that price. We had quite a good massage at the spa although we felt that it was significantly overpriced. The therapists were lovely girls; the spa manager, on the other hand, was in urgent need of a personality transplant – he completely lacked people skills and couldn’t have been more disinterested.
The hotel’s artwork is very interesting, the ABC store and car rental agency on site very handy and the hotel’s location close to some excellent restaurants (Fish Hopper almost next door being one of the best) and shops also makes it a good choice (although we were dismayed to discover that almost all shops in Kona shut by 6pm. depriving us of one of our favourite past-times of doing a bit of arts and crafts shopping after dinner which we so enjoy when we holiday in the Mediterranean or Asia). Given that Hawaiian prices for food and accommodation are crazy by European standards, the King Kam is a well located and reasonable choice, especially if you have breakfast included in the price.
Whats worse is their concierge double billed my forex card .. a debit card… as cameron (the person that was manning the desk) was clearly untrained.. and then what began was a four day ordeal of trying to get my money back. I did get a lot of help from the relationship manager at my bank and from Johnessa (the senior manager at the concierge services). However, i would have spent a sizeable sum in making calls to my bank and what a waste of time on my holiday.
The world is moving to vegan and vegetarian diets and their restaurant menus need more such options.
The best thing about the hotel is its location, but everything else needs improvement.
For the hefty roomrates one dishes out, breakfast needs to be included as does parking.
And the team can get lessons on customer service.
Even housekeeping was terrible… a beachside hotel needs to make your room every day and not every two days… and even then our bed wasn’t made.
My room was very basic and dated.
Dining: Breakfast is a rip off at $32 for the buffet and to be honest there wasn’t much on offer as a buffet. Very disappointing and this will be the first Courtyard I have ever been to (Worldwide) that doesn’t offer complementary breakfast to Marriott Ambassador members!
The best part of my stay was the Burger at Bill Fish Poolside Bar.
I doubt I would stay there again either on business or pleasure!

If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel and plan to spend your days on excursions away from the hotel, this is a good option as it is right in the heart of downtown Kona close to everything. However if you plan to spend anytime relaxing at the hotel, you should consider another location and hotel. Although it is not advertised on the Marriott website, the hotel is located on a public beach that fills up with locals everyday. We could not find a spot to sit and the day we tried to use our “free” chairs and umbrella they had already been rented for the whole day. We tried the pool, but it was also full. Although the hotel requires wristbands at the pool, nobody checks, so it fills up too. We rented the most expensive Oceanfront suite on the website and we had a view of the marina parking lot and roof, because we were placed in the east tower. Request the west tower for a much better view. We were also placed in a handicap accessible room even though we did not request one. I was surprised it was not saved for somebody that needed the accessible features. It made our stay more awkward with low closet shelves and short showerheads. We had two bathrooms, but one of the toilets did not work. Maintenance staff were in the room on two different occasions and the toilet was never repaired. Housekeeping is only provided upon request so most people just put their food trash in the hallways and it gets left there for days making hallways smell like rotting food trash. Positives-Inexpensive for Hawaii, nice breakfast buffet, and an AMAZING luau!
