Honu Kai B and B is perhaps the most inviting and comfortable lodging we've experienced, bar none. Wendi, Kona Dave, and Mariah happily go out of their way to make every guest feel welcome, pampered, and unique.

It is located about 3 miles up the mountain from town, a quick 15 minute drive from the airport, and has great access to the major highways for easy access to all parts of the island.

Honu Kai is in a quiet neighborhood behind a security gate. It has 4 rooms, a large covered outdoor common area for meals and relaxing, a refrigerator and freezer shared by guests, a bbq for guest use, and a fire pit for relaxing conversation Our room, (the Nigori room) was large, very comfortable (great bed and linens), and quiet. It was just off the common living/dining area yet very private. It has a large sunken bath with double head shower.

The entire B and B is elegant yet very approachable and comfortable. We immediately felt welcome and 'at home.'

Breakfasts were amazingly good! They included fresh fruits and avocados (some grown in the yard), fresh juices, pastries, a hot entree, and, of course, Kona coffee. Special diets, no matter how challenging, were accommodated with aplomb. We stayed a week and each day the breakfast was unique, no repeats. The presentation was always a delight.

Wendi, Dave, and Mariah know the island well and have maps, suggestions, and tip sheets to help guests find whatever they desire. We found their suggestions for restaurants to be very helpful and spot on. When we wanted to visit other parts of the island, we relied on the tip sheets to guide our travels and find interesting and entertaining places along the way. We visited numerous cultural sites, beaches, Kona coffee farms, a macadamia nut facility, many artist shops, and more, all based on the recommendations of the Honu Kai team. They will also provide coolers, ice packs, beach towels and chairs, and snorkeling gear upon request and for no extra fee.

On the way home, my wife and I were discussing what was the best part of our Hawaiian vacation. We agree, staying at Honu Kai was the highlight.

Mahalo Nui Loa to the both of you for staying with us and taking the time to right such a refreshing review right after the last review which hurt and depressed us both. Because you picked up our spirits and renewed our faith in quality guests, we are offering you both a free 3 night stay with us at Honu Kai B&B. Just reference this review date and we will be happy to credit your account and help you celebrate your return to our island. Mahalo as well for mentioning our breakfasts that we are so proud of. Honu Kai has 15 different breakfast specialties, so unless you're staying with us for more than 2 weeks, no 2 breakfasts will be the same. We like to think of our breakfasts as more of a 'morning dinning experience' to start off an excellent day on our island. With our free stay offer, we are looking forward to having the both of you back and allowing us the time to make your stay on our island the very best possible. A Big Island Aloha from Wendi and Kona Dave

Honu Kai was the perfect home base for us on the big island. It is reasonably priced and set up above Kona so we could avoid the hustle and bustle. Hosts Wendi and Dave work hard to meet their guests' needs. The breakfasts are elaborate and great for a well-rounded diet. The only thing we would have liked would have been to have more natural products in the room. Body products and defuser sticks were too perfumey for us. But we loved this BnB for convenience, cost, and service.

Mahalo Jan for choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to write a review. “Perfection” at Honu Kai is not our goal, it is our standard. So when we get anything less than an excellent review, we look at it very seriously to see what and how we can fix whatever made our guest not 100% satisfied. In our 13 years we have taken all suggestions and criticisms to heart and made changes to our B&B that would improve the stay of others. At one time TripAdvisor rated us the #4 B&B in the United States and the #1 B&B for 8 consecutive years in our State. Our commitment to quality of services has only improved in the past years, so we are sad and confused to see our rating fall so dramatically. Because we know it is NOT our quality of service which is at fault, we can only assume it is because of the quality of guests we recently have had staying with us. As in the past, guest’s who have had factual and legitimate issues, we have taken to heart and have made changes so we can enhance the stay of future guests. But now we find ourselves with more guests who are beyond picky and Petty with their own personal tastes and smells that are beyond our control. In 13 years you are the first person in thousands to complain about the fragrant of our made in Hawaii, Gardenia scented hand/body lotion and our subtle defuser sticks located NOT in the bedrooms, but in the bathrooms. Most B&B’s don’t even offer hand/body lotions. You are not required to use our products if you don’t like them. You do have the option of bringing something that only you like, or tell us specifically what you would like in your room and we’ll do the best to provide it for you. This lotion product has been so popular we’ve had guests wanting to purchase it from us. We don’t sell it but are happy to allow them to take it with our Aloha. In regards to our subtle defuser sticks, you are again the first guest in thousands to negatively comment on it. This is a product we do not put into our bedrooms, but into our bathrooms, for reasons I guess you don’t understand. Once again, if this product bothered you, we would have been more than happy to remove it if you would have mentioned it to us. I hope you understand that because you are the first and only in thousands of guests who have stayed at Honu Kai who do not like these amenities, we won’t be changing anything we currently provide to our guests because of your review. We do appreciate you letting future guests know what we will be providing for them which has offended you, so they may let us know if it will be an issue for them as well. We know and understand that when you’re dealing with thousands of people you won’t be able to please all of them, but we hope next time you or future guests visiting Honu Kai will simply communicate to us what the issue is before hand, so we can rectify it before you feel the need to communicate a negative personal issues with the rest of the traveling world. We hope your future travels will all be 5 star experiences, Kona Dave

The Honu Kai bed and breakfast run by Wendi and Dave was more like a tonic for the soul than a resort or B&B. These are two wonderful human beings who invest emotionally in the guests and bonded with us like family. Wendi was so nice to accommodate us on very short notice. We stayed at the Land room, which was almost a treehouse with gorgeous jungle themed appointments, a serene lanai and views of vibrant gardens with whimsical statuettes and even more quixotic animals and birds that throng this scintillatingly verdant nook within the Emerald Isle. Wendi and Dave made us feel at home, accommodating our every request including special requirements for breakfast and accosting them with our laundry. The breakfast was a gourmet experience, an ambrosia for the tastebuds… a family recipe cooked to perfection; I asked. If not for anything else, come here for the birds that thrive here and the take your breath away beautiful gold dust day geckos, who’s you can feed jelly to, or watch them adorably lick it off Dave’s little motorbike… yes these guys did save 15% or more on their auto insurance!!! If you visit the big Island, do yourself a solid and stay at Wendi and Dave’s. It is a seven star experience that won’t drill a hole in your wallet, and you’ll end up making some cool friends for life.

Mahalo Vamsi for your beautifully detailed review of our home. Honu Kai provides guests with more than just a comfortable bed to sleep in, and a gourmet breakfast to start your day. As you so eloquently said it, Honu Kai is more like "A Tonic for the Soul" provided within our lush gardens of local fruit trees, plants and vegetation which many of the island local birds also call home. A Big Island Aloha from your new "Cool friends for Life", David & Wendi

I can't say enough good things about Honu Kai B&B and the owners, Dave and Wendi. My wife and I decided to stay there on our long-awaited vacation because of the photos online of the beautiful rooms and the gardens around the property, and the extras available to enhance our vacation (beach chairs and towels, snorkeling equipment, warm clothes and ponchos for rainforest/volcano excursions, etc.). Due to a last minute cancellation, we were upgraded to the Mala Hale bungalow, which was perfect - a living room with big screen TV, full kitchenette, separate bedroom and bath, and private deck - all sparkling clean and beautifully decorated. The bed was super comfy! The gardens were every bit as beautiful as expected. We enjoyed walking around, seeing the gorgeous exotic plants and water features, hearing the birds and other wildlife, and just relaxing in the tropical wonderland. We also took advantage of all(!) of the beach equipment and other extras, which came in super handy. But what we didn't expect was just how warm and friendly Wendi and Dave were, how organized they were in helping us plan our daily activities, and how delicious the breakfasts were each day. My wife and I are foodies, and the breakfasts were one of the highlights of every day, each day different, filling, spectacularly presented and gourmet delicious! We enjoyed the conversations with other visitors from all around the US and other countries over morning breakfast and occasionally in the evening as we returned from our adventures. Great recommendations regarding the local restaurants, too. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. I highly recommend Honu Kai to anyone looking for a relaxing and delicious stay on the Big Island. We will definitely be back!

Aloha Drew and we'll be anticipating the two of you returning to Honu Kai. The Big Island is called the "Big Island" for a reason and it takes more time to explore, appreciate and experience this magical island. We've lived on Hawaii for many years and have experienced almost everything there is to experience. We can help tailor a guest's itinerary to what interests them the most to accomplish the best time possible on our island. We've designed Honu Kai so after guests come home from a long excursion day they can take a deep breath and relax in our no stress Zen Zone among the surrounding lush vegetation, wild life, Koi ponds and the many water features of our botanical gardens. It is our 'Kuleana', or responsibility to make sure all guests have the best experience possible on our island. Mahalo for your heart felt review and for choosing to stay with us for an extended time so we could fulfill our 'Kuleana' to the two of you. Wendi & Kona Dave

My wife and I elected to stay here for our honeymoon, and we are so glad we did! We wanted to get away from the crowds and fill our honeymoon with authentic Big Island experiences. Kona Dave and Wendi were amazing hosts and ensured our stay was wonderful with above and beyond hospitality, excellent recommendations for every part of the island, and each day we were there they prepared a unique and delicious gourmet breakfast made with local and some on site produce. The Lanai where we would meet for breakfast each morning was hard to leave, with fresh Kona Coffee and the soothing tropical ambiance created by the landscaping, bird feeders, and authentic Hawaiian decor. Wendi and Dave graciously got us set up with all the needed beach gear, towels, snorkel equipment, and a day cooler for our trip. Honu Kai was an all around excellent place to launch our daily adventures from.

This B&B is only 10 minutes outside of downtown Kona but you feel like you're in another world. When you pull into the property you are instantly surrounded by a lush garden of trees & flowers, listening to birds & flowing water. The rooms were well-equipped, but the real beauty of this B&B was the common space outside the bedrooms including an outdoor kitchen, sofas, large breakfast table, and a hot tub where you could relax and enjoy the peaceful environment.

Wendi and Dave were incredible hosts, warm and welcoming, who really took the time to get to know you and help you plan your stay. They know the island inside and out and helped us find the hidden gems of the island. I honestly wish I had spent less time looking through the guidebook before our trip, so I could have saved myself time and just asked them instead!

The breakfasts were delicious - fresh fruit, Kona coffee, and creative dishes. We had wonderful company at the table and it was so nice to have the opportunity to meet other guests and learn more about the island.

If you want the action of the west side of the island with the lushness and tranquility of the east side of the island, look no further. This location is excellent/convenient, the grounds are unparalleled, and the hosts are incredible.

Mahalo Katy for staying with us and giving us such a nice review. Honu Kai B&B is situated at the 1000ft elevation just above Kona making our property cooler and greener, and centrally located on the West side of the island allowing for outings to the North or South of Kona easy. All of our rooms have access to the barbecue and out door kitchen giving the guests the opportunity to prepare their own dinner or lunch at home among our green zen filled gardens and water features. It is our 'Kuleana', or responsibility to make sure all of our guests have the best time possible on our island. We do know our island very well and can help guests immensely with recommendations, reservations or just local knowledge which you won't find in a tour book or on-line. Our 14 different menu options for our 3 course breakfasts make this breakfast more than just a meal, it makes it a morning dinning experience to start your day. Most of all, thanks for mentioning how lush and tranquil Honu Kai is. We've put a lot of effort into our soft and hard natural landscaping, statuary and water features to make this a peaceful and relaxing no stress Zen Zone. If you want a peaceful and relaxing Hawaii vacation, call us and let us tell you how we can make that happen for you by choosing to stay with us at Honu Kai, the #1 rated Bed & Breakfast in Kona. We occupied the MALA HALE BUNGALOW for 9 nights this past May 2021. It surpassed our every expectation and more. The property is located in a peaceful area of Kailua-Kona and easy to get to from anywhere on the Island. We were surrounded by lush, beautiful, well kept vegetation and beautiful tropical plants and ponds. The breakfast each morning was absolutely delicious and expertly prepared and presented. Fresh fruit, fruit juice, pastries and a surprise main dish. Equally entertaining was the daily feeding of the Geckos and birds. The hosts; Wendi and Dave were fantastic hosts and attentive to our every need. The Honu Kai B&B is the first B&B we have ever stayed at. It will forever be our favorite. The entire Big Island visit was a wonderful memory for us. The "Hosts" have become special "Friends" to my wife and I. We look forward to our next visit later this year.

We had an exceptional stay at Honu Kai! This location is surrounded by the most exquisite garden, carefully planned and maintained by Kona Dave, the host on the property. Between he and Wendi, we truly felt pampered with three course breakfasts carefully planned and presented with flare and love. The property had everything we needed to complete our week yet couldn't easily bring from the mainland; Snorkels, beach chairs, towels, and even boogie boards to relax and melt away stress. The location is very easy to access, yet felt very private with old growth trees and water features on each corner (and multiple Koi ponds!). We felt truly welcomed by the hosts, and there was nothing left forgotten to be assured we were comfortable and cared for each day. Wendi supply us with very helpful "cheat sheets" of the sights to be seen which helped reassure us that we were able to appreciate all that the Big Island had to offer visitors on every corner. The host cat Popo was such a calming treat to relax and enjoy coffee with in the morning, and we were serenaded by a wonderful concert of Coqui frogs each night as soon as the sun set. This was the perfect romantic setting for people like us that were looking for a peaceful and serene Hawaii stay for our anniversary~Truly unforgettable. We had a beach picnic prepared by our Hosts for our anniversary that was well thought out and will never be forgotten (thanks again!). We feel lucky to have experienced and shared with the hosts at their perfect Island Eden. (Wendi and Kona Dave are truly beautiful people!). We can not wait to come back~

Owners are very friendly and gracious. We loved the seclusion yet close to activities in Kona. The food was excellent but also the presentation was outstanding. Everyday the napkins were folded a unique way with flowers. Our room was very comfortable with our own little Koi pond. Fun to watch all the birds and wildlife close at hand. Honu Kai b&b is among the best b&bs I've ever stayed in in my 20 years of traveling. Wendi and Dave are amazing hosts that share their aloha with everyone that walks through their door. Just meeting them was enough to give a good review. However, they deserve an excellent review for much more than that. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and pretty. High quality everything. I'd put it in the luxury category. The towels are unbelievably soft and were replenished every day. Snorkels, beach towels, beach chairs, and an ice chest all were provided for fun days at the beaches. They helped us get reservations at the best restaurant in Kona (Jackie Rey's - we ate there twice!). And the breakfast. It was like dining at a five star restaurant. The food was perfection with local fruits from their own backyard, and the presentation was enough to make Gordon Ramsay happy. Finally, it was such a pleasure to enjoy those delicious breakfasts with guests from around the world and swap stories of our travels and experiences. If you are even considering this being I highly recommend that you just go for it. I am an experienced world traveler and I can honestly say this was one of the best experiences and you can't go wrong with Wendi and Dave. Aloha!

Aloha! No, our bathrooms are all ensuites to each room, all private! Each room has its own access, not through a house or hallway. So not your typical B&B! And we do not take children under the age of 17 years, to keep the zen zone we have created. Adult guests only. Please go online to see all our information at our web site link here at Trip Advisor and book securely there. We hope to welcome you! Happy New Year!

We have 2 boys 9 and 12 years old? Would they be able to stay? Or you are adults only B&B?

Aloha! Thank you for the inquiry. I'm sorry we only take guests 17 and older at our B&B. There is a family friendly B&B just down from us, they have a pool that makes it more fun for kids. Try Hawaiian Oasis, you'll enjoy their hospitality. Cheers, Wendi
