It is located about 3 miles up the mountain from town, a quick 15 minute drive from the airport, and has great access to the major highways for easy access to all parts of the island.
Honu Kai is in a quiet neighborhood behind a security gate. It has 4 rooms, a large covered outdoor common area for meals and relaxing, a refrigerator and freezer shared by guests, a bbq for guest use, and a fire pit for relaxing conversation Our room, (the Nigori room) was large, very comfortable (great bed and linens), and quiet. It was just off the common living/dining area yet very private. It has a large sunken bath with double head shower.
The entire B and B is elegant yet very approachable and comfortable. We immediately felt welcome and 'at home.'
Breakfasts were amazingly good! They included fresh fruits and avocados (some grown in the yard), fresh juices, pastries, a hot entree, and, of course, Kona coffee. Special diets, no matter how challenging, were accommodated with aplomb. We stayed a week and each day the breakfast was unique, no repeats. The presentation was always a delight.
Wendi, Dave, and Mariah know the island well and have maps, suggestions, and tip sheets to help guests find whatever they desire. We found their suggestions for restaurants to be very helpful and spot on. When we wanted to visit other parts of the island, we relied on the tip sheets to guide our travels and find interesting and entertaining places along the way. We visited numerous cultural sites, beaches, Kona coffee farms, a macadamia nut facility, many artist shops, and more, all based on the recommendations of the Honu Kai team. They will also provide coolers, ice packs, beach towels and chairs, and snorkeling gear upon request and for no extra fee.
On the way home, my wife and I were discussing what was the best part of our Hawaiian vacation. We agree, staying at Honu Kai was the highlight.
Wendi and Dave were incredible hosts, warm and welcoming, who really took the time to get to know you and help you plan your stay. They know the island inside and out and helped us find the hidden gems of the island. I honestly wish I had spent less time looking through the guidebook before our trip, so I could have saved myself time and just asked them instead!
The breakfasts were delicious - fresh fruit, Kona coffee, and creative dishes. We had wonderful company at the table and it was so nice to have the opportunity to meet other guests and learn more about the island.
If you want the action of the west side of the island with the lushness and tranquility of the east side of the island, look no further. This location is excellent/convenient, the grounds are unparalleled, and the hosts are incredible.
"I personally loved the nightly chorus of frogs, but if you might find it hard to sleep, you might bring ear plugs or a white noise machine."Read full review
