Set amongst shady trees on the banks of the Kunene River, Serra Cafema is one of the most remote camps in southern Africa, its Portuguese name originates from the mountains that dominate the northern skyline. Guests fall alseep to the sound of rushing water, while by day they explore one of the driest deserts in the world. The camp's eight unique canvas and thatched chalets, each with its own en-suite bathroom, show great attnetion to detail; the elevated decks and simple structures of wood, canvas and thatch create a camp that is at one with its surroundings. The dining room and pool look out over the Kunene River. Activities here are varied, including boating (seasonal), walking, viewing breathtaking landscapes,as well as carefully guided quad-bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes. In this isolated region, the Himba people continue their nomadic, traditional way of life and when in the area, offer guests the opportunity to learn about their lifestyle and traditions.

Nested along a river between Angola and Namibia, this lodge is built around huge trees. It has eight “houses”, connected through a wooden elevated stairway. Each room has its privacy, and a huge terrasse / outdoor living-room facing the river with a cosy sofa corner. The room itself has a large bed, lots of windows (some of them without a glass, with just a mosquitoe net). This means that in winter, the temperature inside the room may get cold. It has enough storage space and a safe. There are not too many sockets, but the wifi is one of the best we have had in Namibia. The coffee is unfortunately not a nespresso machine, but a boiler for water for instant coffee. The room has a bit of “gym material” to do some stretching, meditation or weight lifting. The bathroom is large, with an indoor and an outdoor shower, and a separate restroom within the bathroom.

The common part is beautiful, with an indoor cosy living-room where you can eat and relax, a large dining-room for breakfasts and lunches (can also be taken on the terrace) and a large bar. The food is overall good, the quantities are not always huge. Massages are available in your room.

In terms of activites, you may go for a walk around the lodge with interesting explanations on the plants and rocks (bearly any animals), a visit of the Himba village, a boat tour on the river (you may see crocodiles) and a quad tour.

The staff is really friendly, with enthusiastic singing upon arrival and departure, all orchestrated by an elegant and efficient lodge manager.

Dear zelal25 Thank you for your wonderful review. Seba is truly a wonderful wildlife experience, and the area is known for its large elephant population. In addition, unlike the permanently inundated areas of the Okavango Delta, the habitats around Seba vary greatly, allowing for an abundance of general game viewing, including giraffe, zebra, antelope such as impala, tsessebe, lechwe and wildebeest, and buffalo and warthog. Leopard are common, and hyaena and African wild dog are also regularly seen, while a number of lion have moved into the area, and can sometimes be heard roaring at night. Bush regards Wilderness Safaris

This is an extraordinary place. It’s isolated and takes a while to get there but it’s so worth it. Nestled on the banks of the beautiful Kunene River, the buildings don’t intrude on the landscape, in fact they make you feel part of it. Our beautifully appointed suite had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable, even a yoga mat and weights for a peaceful workout on the deck overlooking the river. Great shower, wifi (not strong but OK), tea, coffee, treats and a stacked fridge.

The highlight for us was the visit to the Himba people. I was concerned that this would be exploitative, but not at all. The lodge works closely with them to provide schooling, food and other things in return for bringing tourists to see their way of life. Our visit was sensitively done – no photos until we’d gone through an elaborate series of introductions, but then we could interact freely.

They were such warm lovely people with dazzling welcoming smiles. Through a translator we were able to converse somewhat and in that short time gained insight into their incredible way of living – so difficult in the eyes of us Westerners but they seem to love it. Please if you visit take plenty of cash (rand or the local currency) to buy trinkets from them. It costs so little for us but means so much to them and they were very grateful. It was an amazing experience, one we will always remember.

We also loved the river cruise which was most pleasant and included very civilised drinks on the northern bank of the river which is actually Angola, so we even visited another country while we were there.

Of course we also have to mention the incredible staff from the manager Matthew, our wonderful guide Athan, and Richel, Annalina, Angel, Rosemary, Ties, Pietra, Ester, Vee and Zander (apologies for any omissions). They looked after us so well. We loved your welcome and farewell singing and dancing as well as the performance you put on one night. Amazing! The food was excellent and we couldn’t have asked for more. As you may have gathered by now, this camp comes highly recommended!

Dear Anne239, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review on Wilderness Serra Cafema. It is most definitely a unique and remote destination. The local Himba people are a very humble and interesting tribe and it always feels like an extreme honour to be able to spend time with them. Our staff are the back bone of the company and our lodges and are the ones that work so tirelessly to make our guests stay so memorable. Thank you for your kind words which we will be sure to pass onto the team. We hope that at sometime in the future we will have the honour of hosting you once again. Kind regards,

Serra Cafema was far and beyond our favorite destination during our 10 day Namibia trip staying at other luxury properties. The setting on the banks of the Kunene river is stunning, and the views from our ATV ride the first evening of the trip were gorgeous - watching the sky change from stormy to a rainbow to the sunset. Our guide Elias was thoughtful, attentive, knowledgeable, and knew how to broach subjects in a way that sparked conversation and questions from the group. Some of our excursions ran long because we had such a great time talking and learning from him!

The food was incredible, and you’d never know how remote the location was based on the incredible variety of dishes served each night including cuisines from other parts of the world and fresh delicious ingredients.

Visiting the Himbe village and our boat ride along the Namibia/Angola border were unforgettable. I feel so lucky to have visited this authentic village as you can’t help but feel their days as a semi nomadic tribe without modern advancements and influences are numbered.

While no air conditioning was a surprise to me given the price point, the room windows had screens so you were able to leave the windows open at night without fear of insects or critters, and the cooler evening temperatures made the room more comfortable. They also provided creative solutions such as a thin wrap that they instruct you to dip in water to use to keep you cool. The room and balcony were gorgeous, spacious, and private, with sliding doors to make it all feel like one space, or close it off in the evening.

Amazing place. As long as you understand where you are going! Super remote, which is the point. Landscape is barren but spectacular. Camp is quite luxurious, not sure how they pull it off way out there. Huge room with outdoor space also with fridge etc., everything one would expect at a top lodge, but I didn't expect quite this nice so remote.

We were in #8 at the end. Depending on water level, not directly on the river like the others, more sand in front and the water father off. At first we preferred out freinds' (#5?) but grew to prefer ours. Sand dunes on the left, water off on the right, gorgeous. Think in general the rooms on the left facing the river might have more privacy, some on the right might see the main areas a bit if on the deck. Think all are on the river with nice views, but double check none have too much growth in front that it obstructs your view.

Is there much there? Lots to DO? Nope. That is the point and the allure. Drive around looking at the Mars-like scenery, visit a Himba village, boat ride, sit on your deck and enjoy the views. Quad bikes, which to be honest I wish they didn't have, but people like them and we never were bothered by the noise so they must travel a different direction. Doesn't get much better than this. We plan to return, that is how special it is.

A wonderful place to see northwest Namibia, rest in a beautiful hotel located beside the Kunene River, travel the river and see crocodiles and baboons. Our guide, Athan, showed us the wonders of the mountains and sandy desert, the immense stillness of the desert and the remarkable creatures who manage to survive here. He also introduced us to the Himba people and took us for a visit to a local village. These people are amazingly resilient and the way they cope with life in the desert is fascinating. Matthew, Gandy, Vee and the rest of the staff made our stay fun and comfortable and sang us welcomes and goodbyes.

I had an outstanding stay.
After several active days in the desert, it was very relaxing and peaceful to be on the banks of the Kunene River.
The scenery in the area is spectacular (and I went knowing that there would not be much, if any, wildlife), well worth the drives out for sunset etc.
The rooms were exceptional, although it was off-putting not to have any proper curtains or blinds (especially as a lady on her own). The beautiful sound of birdsong throughout the day was a delight.
The food & drinks were delicious, amazing given the remoteness of the camp.
The whole team provided an excellent service, being very adaptive to my particular tastes or desires, with an unexpected 'bush' lunch, a specially set up dinner on my room decking, as well as the sundowners on the bank Angola side of the river. It was amazing to be greeted at the most isolated airstrip I have ever been to (& I have travelled much!), with food, snacks, drinks and cold sparkling rose wine!
Special thanks to all the staff & team!
I sincerely hope that this camp survives, despite the few guests at the moment!

The “camp” at Serra Cafema is on the Kunene River which forms the border with Angola. After spending 7 days at other Wilderness desert camps, it was delightful to be near the water. The cabins are very spacious with a large bedroom, indoor and outdoor showers, and an expansive deck overlooking the river. The lodge is extremely nice with the restaurant, bar and library overlooking the river. The staff was wonderful and the food and service were excellent. The highlight of our 2 days here was riding the ATVs in the dunes and finishing with sundowners in a great setting. We also visited the Himba village and took a late afternoon boat trip on the Kunene which allowed us to cross into Angola and visit a local farm. It was a nice way to end our 9 day safari in with Wilderness in Namibia.

I have travelled the world. Been to many remote places and own a home in one. This was one of the very best places I have ever stayed at.

Once a year I do a solo trip to a remote place, ideally with big open vistas. It’s a retreat for me. To hike, where possible, contemplate my objectives for the next year and enjoy the solitude and beauty of the environment.

Cafema offers all of this and so much more. It is stunning beautiful. Located in what i think is the most beautiful desert and dunes of Namibia. So remote it would take days to drive here in a very well equipped hard core 4wd. You fly! The contrast between the lushness of the hidden river valley where it sits and the Dunes around it is something I have never seen before. And the landscape is untouched, save for a few remote Himba villages. Such a contrast to snd so much more beautiful than Soussevlei.

I spent the time there doing long hikes across the desert with a superb guide. But you don’t have to do this to enjoy yourself. The lodge offers boat trips up the river, visits to local villages. Driven sightseeing tours. Or you can just chill and relax in the lodge.

The food, staff and setting were outstanding. I had one of my most memorable trips here. By far the best lodge I have visited in Africa.

Well done and thank you!

Hello Alexandra, Thank you again for contacting us, similar to Hoanib the rooms at Serra Cafema have been designed to allow natural cooling in addition to this the proximity to the river allows a cooling breeze. Temperatures average in the high 30s at the peak of summer but rain storms are often seen at this time of year. It can get quite hot at this time of year but we have ways of easing this for our guests and there is always a chilled drink on hand to cool you down. Thanks Wilderness Safaris

Answer from Wilderness
Johannesburg, South Africa236 contributions1 helpful vote
Thank you … for your question. Game viewing in this area is limited to small herds of gemsbok, springbok and Hartmann's mountain zebra. The Kunene River has a large population of Nile crocodiles. Burchell's courser and Benguela long-billed lark are among the characteristic bird species to be found in this area. There are also a number of endemic reptiles, the desert plated lizard being a particular speciality. But rest assured you will never be short of things to do while staying with us. A wide variety of activities are also on offer: A Nature drives in Hartmann’s Valley, Guided quad biking, Boating on the Kunene River, Fishing on the Kunene River (available on request), Guided nature walks in the valleys and at the waterfalls, Visit to a working Himba village, A full day outing can be arranged to Marienfluss Valley with a picnic lunch, Stargazing with a laser pointer, Back of House Tours, Camp chats on area geology, Children in the Wilderness, the Kunene people and the conservancy. We look forward to your visit.

Hello LuxuryGipsy, Thank you for your question, you have heard right - we are in the process of a full camp rebuild which will be taking place in the first half of next year 2018. With all going according to plan we should be able to open the new exciting Serra Cafema around July 2018. Although rain is scarce in the desert should we receive rainfall this would happen during the summer months in the Southern Hemisphere - December to April. Hope this has been helpful.
