Detailed Reviews
I stayed at Costello's Guest House last summer while I was in Hyde Park. I was there for a little history trip (FDR library, Vanderbilt Estate, etc).
Costello's only has two rooms. I stayed in the smaller room, the nautical room. The bed was comfortable and the room had an individual air conditioner that worked great. Please note there is no television in the room.
The two rooms have a shared bathroom, but I was the only one there for the two nights so I didn't have to share with anyone.
I chose to stay here b/c it was in my budget and b/c I thought it would be a different experience. I had never stayed at a guest house before. The owner was very nice and helpful. She let me use her microwave to heat up leftovers one night and we sat on the porch discussing Eleanor Roosevelt. She knew Eleanor Roosevelt!
Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I would definitely stay there again.

I stayed here during my recent visit to Omega Institute. Patsy is a gracious hostess and the rooms are beautifully appointed and very clean. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. If you have a few minutes, Patsy has interesting, personal stories about Eleanor Roosevelt. Ask her to show you her keepsakes from the era!

Lovely little place. House is very welcoming and Patsy is a brilliant hostess and has lots of useful tips on where to eat and what to see. We rented both rooms which were great. Location was perfect for a weekend away from New York City

We rented both rooms in Patsy's guest house. They were very comfortable. The location was perfect for attending parents weekend at a local college. The house was built in the 1800s and is nicely kept and very clean. We loved taking with Patsy about Hyde Park and the Roosevelt's. She is a wealth of knowledge and quite a woman herself. The two guest rooms do share a bathroom which was no problem for us since we rented both rooms. A good value. Glad we stayed here.

Patsy is a lovely hostess, very accommodating and hospitable. The rooms are neat and clean. The location is quiet and private, but near everything you want to see. Patsy was welcoming and gracious when my mom, sister and I stayed there. All her recommendations were spot-on. She also gave us space, though, to explore on our own. Great value, too!

Quaint, clean, and packed with history. My family and I stayed at Costello's Guest House over ten years ago. I recently returned with a friend for a one-night stay. Little has changed over the years. It's still the perfect choice for those wanting safe, centrally-located lodging that won't break the bank. Patsy, the hostess with the most-ess, is a local history gem and her home is a mini-museum of sorts. Patsy is all to happy to share her "behind the scenes" knowledge of Hyde Park. She weaves wonderful tales about America's own version of "Dowton Abbey." It was a royal experience!

First of all, let me emphasize that the house was immaculately clean. It was very cluttered but clean. Patsy is very pleasant. However, the queen sized bed was in reality a double bed and the twin sized bed was a cot and neither of them are comfortable. Be warned that the Nautical Room did not lock from the outside so any valuables should be taken with you. There is a massage therapy business downstairs and the customers use the only available bathroom which is the one shared by the two bedrooms. Patsy asked us not to leave our shampoos in the bath since it was a public bath. There is no gathering place. The "den" has one chair and the front porch has a few chairs crowded in. The internet varied in strength. All in all, not a very pleasant experience.

Response from Patsy C, Owner at Costello's Guest House
Responded 12 Dec 2018
I am sorry our guest was disappointed in our accommodations. First of all we never advertised that we had a queen size bed. The canopy bed is a double bed and the cot referred to is a twin bed...there was a cot though in the closet in case we had guests with a child. The massage therapist is no longer here, so the bathroom is used now by only guests in both of the two rooms that I rent. There is a comfortable chair in the den, along with a desk and a chair. In fact the desk has two ink wells in it! She is right about the Nautical Room not locking from the outside, but when you are in your room, you can lock the door. If they have valuables, they can leave them locked in their car! The front porch has four chairs, and they are not crowded in. We do have free wi-fi. This is an 1850's historic home, and I'm sorry our guest was so dissatisfied. Hopefully others will visit and be more comfortable than she was! I did what I could to make them comfortable, but you can't please everyone! As my neighbor Eleanor Roosevelt said, "You do what you feel is right, as you cannot please everyone"! Yes, I knew Eleanor Roosevelt too, and many researchers have stayed here as well as her eldest grandson Curtis Roosevelt. Please come to see for yourself!

Perfect location. Just an uncomplicated and simple way to stay. Patsy was very welcoming, very knowledgeable and just downright friendly. There is Cranberry's right around the corner for breakfast and a refrigerator for anyone needing it. The rooms and sitting room were spotless and the WiFi worked perfectly without interruption. All this at a really reasonable price.

Patsy is a really kind and natural person and is a totally professional host - you can tell she has been doing this for a long time. The room was comfortable and clean, and most importantly of all I felt extremely relaxed and thoughtfully cared for (Patsy researched bus schedules for me, furnished me with an umbrella when it was raining, and offered to take me to the station, which was way beyond the call of duty). I really enjoyed our interactions. I am very noise sensitive so really appreciated the peace of the home - not so quiet that you feel like you are walking on egg shells but very peaceful. The shower has wonderful water pressure, which was a big bonus for me as I do like a good powerful shower. I was so happy that I found Costello's guest house - it was far better than staying in a comparably priced (or actually pricier) hotel. Couldn't have asked for more.

Staying at this lovely house was a real treat in so many ways. It was very comfortable, like being at home, and it was well-located -- easy to access all of the places of historic interest, as well as the Culinary Institute of America. The best part of the visit was our time spent talking with Patsy Costello, who knew Eleanor Roosevelt. Our stay was delightful in Hyde Park, and much of that can be attributed to our hostess. I would definitely choose Costello's Guest House again!
