I stayed at the US Grant both before the pandemic and after. On both visits, the staff was extremely kind and friendly, the hotel was super clean, I had a comfortable room/bed, and the food was well prepared. Actually, it’s very difficult for one American breakfast to taste different than an another as eggs are eggs and bacon is bacon. Somehow in this hotel the breakfast just tastes much better than other places. I recommend an oatmeal they have that is topped with walnuts, coconut, and roasted pineapple. Jose did a great job in the restaurant. My only complaint, which is totally on the city and NOT on the hotel, is the unbelievable amount of homelessness on every street corner. Walking with my wife it was uncomfortable with comments made by street people. You will see people sticking needles in their arms and urinating outdoors in public. It’s OK for a visit but nothing on Gods earth could make me live on the West Coast.

I had to be in San Diego one night for a business meeting unexpectedly. I wound up at this hotel, and was so impressed from the moment I arrived. Liliana, at the front desk, was extremely thoughtful and made sure I had exactly what I needed. I loved my room on the 11th floor with a view of the Coronado Bridge and a huge bathtub. It had lots of light and the bed was very comfortable. The WiFi was fast, and room service was delicious. They were very conscientious about COVID and took extra precautions. *Warning at night that two blocks over there are a lot of homeless people, though they were all very friendly, it just caught me off guard. I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend this hotel and their wonderful and diligent team.

A local in for a couple’s staycation, thrilled to be staying in the most historic and beautiful hotel in the city. From valet to the front desk, mask and social distancing signs abound, as should be in the current state of things. Everything was perfect (the self-guided historical tour is great) and I was so happy to be in the hotel built by the son of a former US President and dedicated to his father, Ulysses S Grant. That gesture, which still honors his father to this day, is the most amazing gift from son to father. He is honored so much that a beautiful portrait of the late President, commissioned by his son, greets all that arrive through the valet entrance. Except there is an addition: a piece of fabric over the namesake’s face; a gesture, I suppose, to let the guest know the hotel is covid-safe and that even Presidents can slow the spread. To me, however, it is a denigration to not only the namesake of the hotel, but to its history. And before you say, “C’mon man, it’s just a cute gesture that we’ll all in this together”, I ask you: with all of the signs rightfully put in the hotel encouraging mask-wearing and social distancing, why is this necessary? Five stars, nonetheless.

I’m telling you all about my concerns because the hotel staff and management apparently don’t care. I have spent over 100 nights at the US Grant over the past 20 years. I’ve spent over 760 nights with Starwood and thousands of nights in other hotels around the world. I’m a lifetime platinum level. I only share this to preface: I have had great times in leprosy hospitals and castles. I’m really not that hard to please, when it comes to hotels. My last 2 visits to the US Grant where the only bad experiences I have ever had with this hotel.. The visit this past Friday will be my last. Don’t tell me your upgrading me on a Friday night and then give me a tiny room overlooking a dilapidated building with !!!! written all over the windows. That’s not even the real problem. Don’t ever let them give you room 908!!! The bathroom is so small: the glass shower door extends out past the bathroom exit!!!! I walked into the bathroom and swung the door closed; not realizing the glass shower door was blocking the doorway!!! I came within ounces of force; breaking the plate glass shower door. This room is a death trap and the bathroom is so small; you would have to leave the room just to change your mind. But it was an upgrade???😀😅. From what? I called the hotel today asking for a manager. I waited a couple days to let my frustration soften. The lady who answered all but demanded to know specifically why I wanted to speak with a manager. She said the manager was not available but she would discuss my issues with her and have her call me back. So: I took time to discuss my concerns. 30 minutes later I do hear from the manager. She had no idea why I had called. So much for the concerns I voiced. Btw. Stayed Saturday night at the Park Hyatt Aviara. Wow!! They know how to treat people. Bar and restaurants open. People where friendly and the standard room was spectacular.
