Things did not go as planned even during check in, despite booking with amex there was no room available and no room upgrade. The room was not clean and the carpet was just gross. We called to switch rooms, but no one called or followed up with us. I had wanted to order champagne for arrival and I was told that was not possible but they could deliver between 4-6pm. I told them this was not what I wanted and cancelled the request. This happened anyway and made for an awkward and stressful encounter. The room was noisy, we called and the only response was "most guests find that to be a quite room." The lobby is gorgeous, I just wish the rooms matched. Next time I will stay at another hotel.

Just checked out of this hotel after a three night stay. Prior to traveling I always read the negative reviews so I know what we may encounter. Pleased to say our experience completely contradicted every single negative review. Government business travelers who added a day on for our enjoyment, the Gov ID was verified and the rate honored, no questions or hassles. Used our Suite nights to upgrade from a basic room to a Legacy Suite, again, with no issues. Check in was flawless and pleasant. Our room, 914, was spotless. At the advertised 375 sq ft it was delightful. Included a refrigerator with adjustable temps, thick towels and even luxurious toilet paper! I brought ear plugs as I’d heard the hotel was noisy, we barely heard anything from the street and definitely neither heard nor saw other guests on our floor. Room service the evening we ordered was hot and prompt. Free coffee in the lobby each morning. Breakfast every day in the Grant Grill was absolutely special and delicious. Enrique and Jose took excellent care of us refilling beverages and wrapping up leftovers. Bar Saturday night had great live Jazz. Gaslamp area was so fun in the evenings. We saw no homeless encampments and never saw anything unusual in the area around the hotel. I don’t discount other reviewers experiences, but our experience was just so completely positive it’s hard to believe it’s the same hotel. Either the negative reviews are a tad off base, or the hotel has heard the feedback and improved, because we have had the privilege of staying a other luxury hotels and this was nothing short of a five star, luxury experience. Hope we get to stay again soon!

I had a perfectly fine stay at this hotel. Most importantly, rooms are well equipped, comfortable, and I was happy with the friendly housekeeping staff. Due to the historical nature, the building has a lot of character. While I certainly did not have any bad experiences, and the few staff interactions I had were all pleasant, the hotel felt a bit understaffed at times. Basically the only staffed entrance is the entrance with the parking valet desk. The homelessness problem is on full display in the area around the hotel, but that is an issue across the downtown/gaslamp/convention area in San Diego. For those who wish to avoid that, I think the hotels in Coronado, just across the Bay are a good option. But again, I had an overall pleasant stay at this hotel and would return when visiting San Diego alone for business.

When thinking luxury, the customer should feel welcomed and greeted as such. The quality of bedding should also be consistent with the hotel category. NOT at this hotel. Management supports it’s staff that treats people poorly. In addition to its poorly maintain bedding. As a Platinum Bonvoy Memeber and traveling to many Marriott branded locations yearly, this property by far is one to avoid unless you are looking for nostalgia.Could this be a one off situation? Possibly. But when writing to Marriott, the tone and response from the hotel was consistent with the unapologetic front desk. An apology but no effort to acknowledge the guest experience.

Booked this hotel for a luxury experience. The luxury experience was very lacking . this hotel is a premium at best. The associates did not speak to me not one time with the exception at check-in and check out. the place felt cold and quite unwelcoming. the room itself was nice with great bedding. The only good thing about this hotel has going for it, is its location. If you're looking for a cold and unwelcoming hotel this is the place. Other accommodations will be chosen for my next visit to San Diego.

Dear trvlguy39, Thank you for your feedback! I'm sorry to hear that your experience here with us at THE US GRANT was subpar. Your comment definitely does not reflect the experience that we want our guests to have. Typically we are known for our warm and accommodating services so I'm very disappointed to hear that this was not the case this time. If travels bring you back to San Diego, I hope you give us another chance.

Gorgeous hotel with so much history and the best service in all of Southern California. The rooms are comfortable and the best are soft and perfect. Great location close to everything. The breakfast was superb and the hotel lobby is a great place to hang out and have a cup of coffee

Beautiful hotel in downtown San Diego overlooking Horton Plaza Park. The U.S. Grant is an older hotel but the rooms have been renovated and are clean and spacious, furnished with modern smart TVs, and built-in USB power outlets. Note that the standard and superior rooms are only equipped with showers (no bathtub). The hotel gym is well appointed and clean. There is no swimming pool. The staff (from front desk, housekeeping, and restaurant) are all friendly and attentive. Sadly, like with many big city hotels, the US Grant has a homeless encampment problem that’s so acute (there’s a homeless services center a block away) that the hotel locks all the entrances (including the front entrance) for security reasons. When arriving use the valet garage entrance as it is the only unlocked door to the hotel. Visitors that are not used to big city homelessness may want to stay at a hotel in the Marina instead.

The US Grant is a lovely, older hotel that has been nicely refurnished to modern standards. The best part of the hotel is the staff. I found everyone with whom I interacted to be friendly and doing their best to make my stay memorable. The concierges were super-helpful with recommendations for restaurants and tours. The housekeepers always made a point of saying hello. Staff would show me -- not just tell me -- where things were. King rooms could be cramped with two people, but fine with one. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The desk chair needed replacement (a bit saggy). The room's other chair is of average comfort; however, it's somewhat hard to see the TV from the chair (really have to be sitting on the bed). Bathroom is spacious with a large walk-in shower. Bath amenities are high-caliber. Room includes bottled water (replaced daily) and a coffee machine. Plenty of storage in the closet and drawers and nice bathrobes. One downside is that I asked for a quiet room and mine was anything but. I ended up above the tram, which runs until 1 am and starts up again around 4 am. I was awakened every morning around 5 am with rumbling on the tracks every 5 minutes. Bring earplugs or insist on a room away from the tram. Don't count on being a platinum or titanium elite to help you out in this regard -- it didn't help me. There is one restaurant -- Grant Grille. Service is outstanding. Food options, especially for breakfast, are a bit eclectic. However, I found that if I asked for something not on the menu (e.g., a mushroom omelet), they readily made it for me and it was delicious! The hotel is located about a mile from the convention center at the very edge of the Gaslamp district. As others have said, the area is not great, and the smells walking around the downtown area are unpleasant. The concierge will give you the safest routes between points A and B, which was helpful; I also only went outside in daylight (would not have felt safe after dark). This issue isn't the hotel's fault, of course, but something to know if you stay anywhere in downtown SD. If you do choose to come to SD, the Grant is a great place to stay.

Very nice! The hotel’s feel is notably different from chain hotels; lobby and dining area is just beautiful and it’s a lovely oasis in the city. Very friendly, gracious and efficient service throughout. Enjoyed the Frette linens and robes (heavenly!) rooms feel spacious and are stylish. Wonderful night’s sleep. Happy that there was a keurig- style coffee maker in the room as some other upscale hotels in general I’ve found will not include them for some reason. A note to just be a bit alert as the surrounding area seems to be a little gritty (we would definitely return, though).
