Built in 1946, the Lafayette has been the site of historical glamour, and offers a unique change from a typical hotel experience. Among its famous guests were Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Betty Grable. Inside, the Mississippi Ballroom took center stage where Hollywood’s stars came to dance the night away. Conveniently located to all shopping, entertainment and business areas, the historic Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows is, indeed, the best lodging choice in San Diego.

We were here for a good number of days and were disappointed. Good - The servers at the cafe are awesome! The lobby decor is great. Bad - The hotel has a funky smell and the room was in poor condition (cobwebs on the ceiling), dirty carpet/furniture, etc. Water pooled up and did not drain during the shower. TV worked at the mercy of the TV gods and the internet was extremely spotty ( I am not talking about streaming movies, just basic searches took forever). People who work at the hotel reception do not smile or seem to want to help. No one is warm or friendly. We went there for a break and ended up doing a lot of work ourselves. I think the reviews are from people who use the pool and lobby for daytime use. If you were a guest at the hotel your experience would be very different (in my opinion).

The staff, lobby, and pool area were good. The room was small, bed was uncomfortable, the only chair in the room was a circa 1955 kitchen chair and the carpet was the dirtiest I have ever seen in a hotel, the bottoms of my feet were black after 1 night with minimal walking around the room. Ziplock bags of ice instead of an ice machine was very odd. Walls are very thin and doors slam loudly, making sleep difficult to come by. There is no chance I would ever stay here again.

The hotel has many nice elements: the lobby, the pool area, the restaurant, and the staff. However, our room, one of the Suze suites was woefully outdated and in need of TLC. The mattress on the main king bed was terrible and the mattresses on the bunk bed were even worse. The bathrooms were dingy, musty, and not well cleaned: there were smeared dead bugs on the walls and a cleaning person left their booties in plain sight on the carpet by the bed. Our room like many others is exterior facing and half the hotel feels more like a motel while the other half which has interior facing rooms with hallways feels much nicer. The price may match the experience with the nicer updated rooms but it feels completely overpriced for the room we had, which even commanded a premium price since it was larger. Overall, we were quite disappointed.

Sadly, the Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club did not meet our expectations. My daughter and I stayed in a 2-queen bed room facing the pool, and my other daughter, her husband and 2 young children stayed in a bungalow. We all stayed for one week. The good news is that the restaurant food and service was wonderful. The bad news is everything else. Our room was shabby and the carpet was dirty and stained. The bungalow, actually a tiny townhouse, was very shabby and the floor was dirty. The tiny kitchen had no dishtowel or paper towels. There was almost no housekeeping service. The bungalow was sort of cleaned once by request. Our room was never cleaned, despite a couple requests. We emptied our own trash, had to ask at the front desk for every roll of toilet paper, and had difficulty getting clean towels as they were often "all in the laundry " or were supposed to be brought to our room but were not. The linens were all worn, dingy and stained. Note that the hotel is Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club. Pool memberships are sold to the public. The pool is often crowded and the lounge chairs all taken. The hotel also hosts wedding events and birthday parties. The weekend we were there the very loud pool parties kept us awake. Rowdy people in the pool kept us awake another night until I requested that management quiet them down so we could sleep. Finally, the key cards did not work time after time. Without exaggeration, our key cards failed to work about 20 times during our stay and had to be reset every time at the front desk. Eventually, a maintenance worker removed and changed the batteries on our door key card reader one night at 11 pm. In summary, if you really want to stay in this area of San Diego, there are few choices, but I cannot recommend The Lafayette Hotel.

The motel-hotel is a throwback to an older era. It's got a fun pool party vibe and the lobby, restaurant, and pool areas are very popular on the weekend. Lots of families and kids, as well as people hosting parties in the downstairs poolside rooms. Weekdays were a bit quieter, and there were morning swimmers doing laps bc the pool is heated. Servers and bartenders were very friendly, but the place is understaffed given the amount of people (pretty normal everywhere nowadays). We had dinner one night and everyone enjoyed their meals (well plated and cooked). Hubby and I had plenty of drinks off the cocktail menu and they were great. Everyone was friendly. The room itself was very dated, spacious and relatively fresh paint, but sparsely furnished (no desk, only 1 dresser, and 1 nightstand, 1 rocking chair). Mattresses were medium thickness with clean sheets. Some towels were thin and worn, while others were newer and thicker. Bathroom is tiny but functional. You have to ask for housekeeping, and extra towels etc. They do provide minimal toiletries, ice bucket, Keurig, and TV. AC worked well as I kept the fan on continuous mode. They also had an extra cot for our littlest kid, which worked for her, but would be uncomfortable for a full sized adult. Carpet definitely needed steam cleaning as the kids' feet were dark after being barefoot, but it was clearly vacuumed. Neighborhood is reminiscent of Portland with street art and a mix of hipster foodies places, local ethnic restaurants, and typical American choices. It is very walkable with 2 major eating areas within 15-20 mins, as well as many places right next door. Location is also great for Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. Glad we stayed there and had a fun time!

So was put into a room from another era, kind of cool, but room itself was not great. Luckily the beds were ok and the shower was clean. Can’t say anything else. Left behind three nice shirts in the closet and after multiple phone calls was told my stuff was gone. Weird place. Funky. Didn’t think I’d get my stuff stolen. Sad. We wanted to stay next year.

I chose this hotel because the price was lower than most for the area and it had a separate room with bunkbeds for the kids. I was trying to go for an old Hollywood experience, but got just old. I was disappointed when I first saw it cause it did not look like the hotel photo. The dining furniture in the room was torn up. We arrived at night and it was super difficult to find the driveway to checkin. However, it was clean and we were fine with it after a couple days. We really enjoyed the pool and breakfast. The waitress was super nice and helpful.

the mattress is completely sagging which should be replaced years ago. the dining chairs all ripped. The light switch by the door was covered up by curtain while the curtain could no longer be close. The rooms have insufficient lighting so it is extremely difficult for guests who have vision problem like me. The parking lot is small & construction crew parked their big truck occupying spaces from hotel guests. After I complained to the front desk about the sagging mattress, he never called me back. When I called again in an hour, he told me that housekeeping was still searching for a replacement mattress. That definitely was an excuse as their place is not that big and should have inventory list of excess items. After I demanded to talk to manager, I got an second room within 5 minutes. When I checked in, I showed the front desk of handicapped parking sign for free onsite parking. But when I checked out, I was still charged with parking fee. When I asked about it, the front desk said that I needed to bring in the handicapped sign again. I told her that I already did that upon check in and I could have husband text an image as I was not going to walk back and forth for their mistake. After I came home, I checked cc charges online and found that they added $50 instead of refunding $50 parking. I called 4 times and left message for Crystal and never got a call back. The WIFI in the bedrooms were unstable. It worked one night before but not in the morning when I needed it. So we had to rush over to lobby to call doctor.

The room was ok - very noisy with weddings one night, and kids running up and down the hall yelling. The hotel has a pool which the locals come and use so there were limited to no lounge chairs available for guests staying at the hotel . People were supposed to wear wristbands to be served but there was only one day that a cursory check was done so if you were planning to stay here for the pool, you may want to pick another place. I picked the place for the location but not sure I would stay again

The pool was very nice and service was great but the rooms really need to be updated. It was too warm and no way to adjust the temp. We opened the window to get fresh air but the traffic outside was noisy. The bathrooms need fans and the bed was not too comfortable. The food at the cafe was tasty and the DJ at the pool was awesome!
