I recently was forced to San Diego for work on short notice. My travel department had me booked into a run down place in Chula Vista, that was in a bad area and far from my work. This is because Comic-Con was happening and they "couldn't" find a better place at the government rate. Any government employee that travels knows about this type of stuff. Luckily i was given the phone number of Lucy Gomez, the sales manager and she helped me out big time. Not only because the quality of the Town and Country was exceptionally better, but my wife and kids were coming out to visit me. Out of the several places I called, she was the only person who i felt like actually cared about me. The Biggest Positives: If you have children, they are going to love this place. My family stays at hotels often, and they have never had so much fun. They days i was at work, my wife and kids would spend at least 5 hours at the pool. Between the pools, water slide, ping pong table and cornhole boards they never complained about being bored. Also, a lot of nights they had a giant inflatable movie screen and projector play movies while kids swam in the heated pools. Pools are also saltwater, which is at least rare for us, and quite nice. The surrounding area is incredibly safe: A lot of hotels that have amazing views of the water, or are in cool neighborhoods (ie. Gaslamp) can have rough areas just a block away. I know several people that have had their cars broken into while parked on the street downtown/gaslamp. The town and country has a short walking path to the Fashion Valley mall and Trolley Stop. My wife felt safe enough to walk the kids over there by herself, which is saying a lot for people from rural new england. It is magically, somehow, close to everything? We did Seaworld, Belmont Park, Torrey Pines, The Zoo, La Jolla Beach, Old Town, Balboa and everything was less than 25 mins way, even the airport. The Trolley (think the T, if you live in Boston) is 100 yards away and goes directly down town without switching trades. Perfect for a Padres game, the Gaslamp or Old Town. Even the Uber to Ocean Beach was only $10. In conclusion: Are some of the rooms a little dated? Sure. Is the Vintage Chic décor maybe not your thing? That's ok. Everything else should more than make up for it, 100x so if you are there with kids,

(After a disappointing arrival, we located a Target within 2 tram stops from the "Resort") We arrived at 10 pm using public transportation. We were starved. We should have ate at the airport. Upon arrival, we were told we just missed all food options on property close at 10 pm or before (seriously, at a "resort" no food options after 10 pm, WOW). There is nothing within walking distance at that hour. Front desk clerk pointed the way to a gas station, which you could not see from the "resort." We went walking but needed to use an underpass. It was pitch black dark, we could hear voices, but couldn't see anyone. NOPE!!! Read articles about the homeless in San Diego, and we couldn't tell if this underpass was a sleeping place, so we didn't feel safe. By this time, it was well after midnight. We just gave up and went to bed. Next day, ventured out, stopped by the front desk, letting them know routing guests to the gas station was possibly putting them in danger. The lady working says, oh, we serve small bites at the bar until 11 pm. WHAT!!! So, we could have eaten, if only the staff knew what times everything was open until. Who operates a "resort" with no food options after 10 or 11 pm?? Sitting out by the pool, during the day, the servers bother you every 10 minutes, but service at the MONKEY Bar, S-L-O-W. We ordered drinks and pizza. Guy walked around with our drinks in his hands, back and forth (had we known they were our drinks, we would have waived the guy over). Then the pizza took 45 minutes more. They didn't seem that busy, lots of empty chairs all around. We had to ask for the pizza to go to get to our next conference event. Talked with many other people at the same event. They were also not impressed with food options on site. Nothing in the MARKET Cafe is marked with prices. I get "resort" prices are more, but not even putting the price on items is a real turn-off. If you want breakfast from the MARKET, get there early, LONG LINES. BTW, there is a Target grocery store two stops from Fashion Valley. Use the Mission Valley Center Station to find Target. There are also several places to eat/shop in the area. Using the back side of the property, within walking distance, there is a large mall and food court/restaurants. So, after our first arrival, we didn't spend very much money at the "resort" on food or drinks. We stayed in a bungalow. It was clean. Small mini-fridge, but no microwave. All staff we encountered were nice. This is not a place I would return to. I would return to the area, as we didn't get to do anything, as this was a work conference. Public Transport is easy to use, once we got it figured out.

We booked a room in the Palm tower (Snazzy with 2 queens) for 3 nights but ended up checking out after the first night. The room that they put us in literally had a view of brick wall. I couldn’t believe it! To make matters worse, we were given a room key that did not work when trying to get into the parking lot. We had to drive back around the corner, park our car, and get in line again at the lobby. The front desk attendant told us that we could have just pressed a button for help and that we would be buzzed in. He also shared that this was a recurring problem. Really?!!! You would think management would have the gate repaired! Also, entire place was loud, dirty and the service was not good. Fortunately, we able to book a room at the Dana after checking out. It was a little more expensive but worth it! We had a view of the bay and the service was fabulous!

I really wanted to like this place. It has such a cool vibe, the beds were good and the movie night was very cute. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. We had three rooms for our group. We asked for a pack-in-play the day before arriving and again at check-in. We were told no problem but never received it after two calls to remind them that night. Another room asked for extra towels several times with no response. We ordered drinks from the market and never received it. When I asked for a refund (my card was immediately charged) I was told twice they would take care of it. Still nothing. Parking is $25 a day which isn’t unusual but the use of the garage was difficult in that the key fob didn’t always work. They wouldn’t answer the buzzer so we were changed another $25 to leave the lot. The hotel appears to be expanding which will further tax an already weak staff and crowded pools.

A bit tired tbh for the money! I’m not getting that there’s no breakfast and you have to queue up for 20mins to get a poor dry croissant and fruit bowl for 30 dollars!! I have posted a picture of the coffee! 5 dollars for a cup of lukewarm dish water! Not good!
