Lovely hotel near hospital. There is NO VALET service so you need to drive down an alley, pull into a hole in the wall, push the intercom button and then talk to someone at the front desk who will confirm your reservation and open the gate into the parking. Just hope you are given street level parking because if your car is large trying to fit into one of the Mini Cooper size stalls on the lower level parking is difficult after which you will need to haul your luggage up two flights of stairs, walk across the upper level outdoor parking and then push the intercom again so they can let you in. And no, you can’t use the elevator to go to the lobby (room key needed) so you need to haul your luggage up another two flights of stairs. Not explained on the website. “Self parking” is $50 per night. There is a door leading to “Mels Dinner” where you can eat (limited menu), okay food. Be aware that since the streets are one way and there is construction, you have to may have to make several right turns around several blocks to ‘find’ the alley where the entrance to the parking is located. The website should convey this information. The hospital parking entrance is easy to get to with a left turn onto a two way street at the end of the alley and then a left turn onto Geary where the hospital entrance is located. The decor of the hotel is lovely….vibrant….clean, gorgeous bathroom with decent shower pressure and hot water. Beds could be more comfortable.

Great location and felt pretty fresh when we visited, maybe it hasn’t long been revamped? New York style rooms in terms of size, they are quite small but luckily there was a nice long window seat where we could put our luggage. Bathroom was tiny but probably in proportion to the room.

A few negative points... There’s no bar or restaurant in the hotel however there is access through to the excellent Mel’s Kitchen (Diner) and you get a 10% discount off food as you stay in the hotel. The rooms are noisy both from street noise and from the other guests, you can hear doors opening, people walking and whatever else and that’s even over my snoring so it must’ve been bad. Also, I did get woken up be the smell of cannabis (legal in San Fran) coming from one of the surrounding rooms so suspect that the ventilation isn’t that great.

One general point, although fairly priced the additional charges and taxes kill you whether it’s for parking, tourist tax, city tax. The hotel rate was essentially doubled by the time we left. Again, not directly related to the hotel but some thing to be aware of.

There are very few things to complain about the hotel proper: rooms are nice and modern, Wifi is good, bed comfy and even noise levels at the second floor, facing the street, were very low. It is a recently renovated property. (Ok the body towel was tiny, if I must). But the one big ding against the hotel is its location: The Tenderloin district.
It is not yet in the “up and coming” category. It’s more in the failed social experiment, you don’t want to walk around at night type of area. Filthy streets, very few businesses and just uncomfortable. The hotel is just a mile away from downtown - it’s close to the civic center - certainly not in the middle of things. So if you’re ok taking an Uber everywhere this hotel is fine. I’ll stay away for the foreseeable future.

My husband and I planned a 5-day holiday trip to San Francisco and we wanted to select a hotel within the Marriott family that was well-located with a private parking lot. We chose the Downtown Courtyard Marriott on Van Ness and it far exceeded our expectations! The historic characteristics of the building was wonderful and we were pleased that it had retained its charm when it was recently transitioned into the Marriott family of hotels. We loved our room (#525) as it was near the end of the hall yet not too far from the elevator and close to a closeted ice machine. The room was quiet and we could not hear much street noise even though we were in the heart of the bustling City of San Francisco. There was a long easy to draw curtain that cut out the light for quality sleep. The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful when we had questions. The hotel rooms were very clean with elegant crown molding, a long window seat and a renovated bathroom with attractive glass tiles in the spacious shower. The original historic closet was deep and held a lot of luggage and clothing. The full-service restaurant located just downstairs, Mel’s Kitchen, was open until 11 pm. It was a fantastic addition to a Courtyard Marriott and we dined there several times and also brought their tasty food to our room. The gated and secured parking lot was wonderful and safe and the parking valets were very helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a great stay in San Francisco!

This was the nicest Courtyard I've been in, and a very great experience overall. We stayed here as I had a medical appointment in the Sutter Gould buildings across the street, so the location was perfect for us. Generally, the location is a little gritty, but pretty close to the theaters and not far from Union Square by car.

We arrived at 10AM but our room was already ready and we were able to check in. As I needed handicap parking, we were allowed to get into the parking area, too.

Note, the parking lot is super super small and cramped but it is gated for security and we were told there's another parking garage across the street too. On-site parking was $49 a night, which I thought was steep but worth it for us.

The interior of the hotel is beautiful and looks newly redone. The room itself was a little small but beautifully appointed. The TV has the capability to stream from your Netflix (etc) accounts too.

Staff was all very friendly and accommodating. We asked for extra pillows which they provided, and we absolutely loved the pillows! We enjoyed our stay and we will not hesitate to stay here again.

I traveled with a family member so they could have a surgery at the Sutter hospital across the street from the hotel. The hotel staff were courteous and went the extra mile while I was waiting for my family member. Everyone was very nice and understanding that it was not a fun trip to be on. There were guidelines for staff and guests to stay safe, taking precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I felt very well cared for. Some of the amenities were closed and the hotel was not busy, but the staff were well aware of guest's feelings and took extra care to make people feel welcome.

We were sound asleep at 4am and someone opened the door and entered the room. I believe it was a housekeeper but am not positive. I called the front desk and they said they had been notified and were sorry.
At checkout the next day I had mentioned it and they said they would get back to me. They never did...
I sent an email and they sent me an automated response and offered 2,000 bonus points. That is a laughable number of points for being disturbed at 4am when you have work the next day. I did not feel safe in that room at all and they did not rectify the situation. I am still very disappointed. I expected more from Marriott.

Beautiful hotel. The rooms look as nice as the pictures. Lots of character at this hotel but has modern updates.
The room size is normal for San Francisco. If you like space, get a suite which is more like a studio suite.
The bathrooms are gorgeous. Tall people rejoice: the bathrooms are suitable for tall people.
San Francisco has a lot of homeless people so I has happy to see the safety measures: the buzz into the parking, buzzing into the building. After you check in, you use your card even to use the elevator. It seems wonky, but I appreciate the extra measures.
Parking is $50, which for San Francisco is low.
The bed was perfect.
Great location. Walkable to Japantown and the Fillmore district.
We will be back. Thank you for your excellent service and kind staff.

Overall our experience at CM on Van Ness was very good.
I am reviewing to help others with the parking situation.
I called hotel prior to booking to confirm on-site parking (yes) and in-and-out privileges (yes).
Please be aware that the parking is on two levels. If you are assigned to the lower lot, you will need to go up a short but steep set of stairs to reach upper lot, and then enter the hotel. If you have mobility issues, you should request upper level or have your traveling partner enter upper lot to drop you off first.
Also, when you check out, you can no longer access elevator (because no key card) to return to parking lot. So again, if mobility issues, have someone else check you out or request staff to call elevator for you.
As much of SF is on hills, this hotel is no exception. Our room had a definite slant. Not enough to bother, but if you have equilibrium issues, you will notice.
Only other issue, the staff insisted that our room had the king bed we requested, but it was smaller. It may be listed as king, but it was smaller than the king in San Jose the next night, and smaller than our king at home.
I would stay here again now that I know how it is set up.

My family and I stayed a few days at this hotel and enjoyed it very much. It was much less expensive than the other Marriotts in San Francisco so we gave it a try. We had a suite in the back of the hotel on the fifth floor that was just right and very quiet. I have nothing negative to say about the hotel itself, which is unusual for me. I really like the decor and everything is clean and new. My only two concerns which we knew when we booked is that the hotel isn’t in the best neighborhood and so there aren’t many dining options within a short walk. There is a Mell’s kitchen dinner in the building which is pretty much average and fortunately for us a Starbucks across the street which got a lot of use from us. My other concern is that there are quite a few homeless people around which I have no issues with but some can be a bit aggressive which was a little concerning to my family. Lastly we saw open drug use which again, is concerning but we’re from a big city so seeing that isn’t anything new.

Would I stay here again? You bet. It’s a great hotel at a reasonable cost and as long as you keep you situational awareness when you’re out, you’ll be fine.
