This place has a nice location, next to the beach and not far from Front St and Kaanapali Golf Course and the Whalers Village. The staff was very courteous and helpful. The pool area was quite crowded with mainly young/middle age families with kids or retirees but we rented a canaba for the day along the lazy river pool which was quite nice. The units themselves are individually owned, so they often get rented out a-la airbnb style. Would I stay here again? I'm not sure I would for a number of reasons. For example, they stick RFID tags in the towels and then charge you $20 each if you don't promptly return them. One of the doors in the container where you get the towels was not closed all the way, so it would've been really easy for us to not give it back and the previous user get charged. Also, if the towels somehow get discolored after you wash them in your washer/dryer unit you incur a charge. If you want housecleaning services, you have to pay extra for it. It just felt like you were nickel and dimed for everything, and as much as we had to pay to rent the unit for a week, at least give us housecleaning services as part of the deal. Not sure what their deal with all the towel penalties was either.…
Resort is in a spectacular location and the amenities are nice. Caters to all ages. There are same things we had to learn the hard way, like how to use the air conditioning and access to the garage which would have been much less stressful if they were explained, or even mentioned, during check in. Would most likely stay here again now that I know some of the resort “secrets”
I can’t say enough great things about this resort. I was not sure what to expect since some of the reviews can be all over the map. My husband and I stayed for a week for our honeymoon. Yes there is a lot of family’s but there is so much space that everyone can spread our. The pools are large and have hot tubs through out the resort too. Lots of loungers and umbrellas. They also had spaces down on the grass too. We ate at Duke’s multiple times, we had reserved our spots weeks in advance when I initially booked us at the resort. We also ordered take out at the pool and to take up to our room. The food is very good and fresh! Well worth the money. I would also suggest the Fish Market, it’s just up the highway in a plaza. Our fish was amazing and it was well priced! The beach is long and beautiful. You can walk quite a ways. We did snorkel but just like the other reviews you should just head down a little ways where the beach is nicer to get in and out. The great part is you don’t need to go far to find the reef and lots of different fish. We had a partial ocean view room on the fifth floor. It was exactly what I expected from the pics. We booked directly through the resort and had no issues. The first morning our stove didn’t work, they sent someone up while we where on a walk abs they fixed the fuse and left. We had tons of towels and soaps left from house keeping too. The kitchen is well stocked with what you would need to do simple meals and drinks. We bought grocery’s to do breakfasts out on the deck . All in all, amazing resort, amazing staff and great experience. The only thing that surprised us was the weather. Very windy and good idea to throw in an umbrella, it tents to quickly rain for a few moments then stop.…
This is the second time we stayed at Honua Kia resort. Great location, great condos and service. We had a blast. Walked countless miles on the trails by the property as well as did some hiking. A grocery store is across the street allowing you to grab food and drink. On the beach with multiple pools/hot tubes. It is a family place. We stayed in a 3 bedroom on our first trip when traveling with our kids. The second was a one bedroom for just the two of us. Both units were fully stocked with everything you need for a week.
Long review because I research a lot in advance. Honua Kai exceeded our expectations. We stayed in Hokulani 247 which was listed as a partial ocean view 2 bedroom suite. We considered it ocean and pool view. We lived on the huge lanai with the doors opened all the way so that the indoor-outdoor space was seamless. Having this gorgeous outdoor space made it feel like paradise all the time. The view was better than the photos. We could actually see the surf from the crashing waves plus the pool while seated at the large table. Birds chirped, palm trees swayed. We ate all our condo meals on the lanai. We could hear the live music nightly from Dukes from the lanai. The patio doors that opened out the whole length of the condo were amazing. This condo was also a good location because it was never in direct sunlight (south facing) and it was good for people watching as people walked back and forth. People used the big grassy courtyard for kicking a soccer ball, and games of tag with toddler. We grilled one night at the set of grills next to Dukes. You have an ocean view, pool view, and view of the entertainer. My teens were inspired to grills with their grandparents. So perfect. The location north of black rock is great. While the beach directly in front of the resort is rocky for swimming and not ideal for entering to snorkel, the beach in front of the Westin next door has areas that are great for swimming and areas to enter for amazing snorkeling. It isn’t crowded, nor isolated. I was standing directly in front of the hotel in thigh high water and a sea turtle came within a foot of my legs. Dream come true! The sand was soft and the water clear. It is a one minute drive from Kahekili beach park which has a grassy area, large covered gazebo with picnic tables, restrooms and is known for snorkeling. It was a good place to go where my parent with mobility issues could watch us snorkel. I much prefer this beach to those of Dominican Republic and Mayan Riviera. The beach isn’t too wide but it also is not lined with rows of lawn chairs and tons of people. The resort is at the north end of the Ka’anapali beach walk which runs to the Hyatt in the south. This level path is beautifully landscaped and mobility accessible. Craft vendors seem to rotate between resorts daily along this path. It is a great asset to be located along this path. The food at Dukes is very good, locally sourced, and it has a great atmosphere with live music every night. The Aina market sells O’o farms 100% maui coffee which was delicious and fancy coffees. They get a line in the early morning. They also have smoothies (delicious and $10) and acai bowls as well as sandwiches, a few gift items and sundries. The Whaler’s market has a wider selection of gifts, groceries and sundries at resort prices. The Honokowai food truck park is across the street from the resort with something for everyone (Hooked for seafood, thai food, Hawaiian bbq, burgers). Walk or drive out the back way through Luana villas section to avoid the long left turn light to get there. There is a gate the back way that the parking pass activates. Also across the street is a plaza with Times Supermarket, L&L BBQ (recommend for plate lunch and saimin, orange chicken), Pizza Paradiso (recommend, they also have Dole whip), Java Jazz, Subway, doctors on call, Slappy Cakes and more. Up the street is an ABC store, the Fish Market (which sells fish tacos and poke), Farmer’s market (which is a store but there is an actual farmer’s market on Wednesdays). Further up (4 min drive) is a McDonalds which was requested by my teens. They do have local breakfast that has spam, Portuguese sausage, egg, and rice, which was fun to try for something different. Next to the resort is a series of Westins and an excellent local singer Max Angel rotates between them 5 nights a week. It is a beautiful walk along the beach path to see the entertainment or dine at these resorts. The Ka’anapali area is all beautiful with amazing landscaping and the landscaping at the resort itself is gorgeous. Lahaina is an easy 10 minute drive away. Everything is easy. The pool area is extensive and very nicely laid out. There are a lot of areas suitable for babies and toddlers. There is a slide and a waterfall with a grotto behind. The lazy river type pool is not a lazy river because there is no current but it was still fun to swim. I think there were 5 hot tubs. They have night swimming too, which was very quiet and serene. Because the resort has so many large units (2 and 3 bedrooms), there are a lot of intergenerational families. The pool towel system through a vending machine activated by your room key worked well and you could exchange as often as you wanted. The pool chair situation was difficult on Sunday (with people reserving chairs they weren’t using) but improved after that we were always able to find a seat except on Sunday. Starting Monday, they had signs they would remove things from seats unoccupied for over an hour and I think they were enforcing it. Our 2 bedroom unit had a good layout with the kitchen, dining and living room in the middle and the two bedrooms at opposite ends. Both bedrooms had adjoining bathrooms and both were almost equal size. The only difference was that the master bedroom had its own access to the lanai and the second bedroom bathroom opened to the main area and there wasn’t a separate area with a door for the toilet. Both had huge soaker tubs, big glassed shower areas, and double sinks. The kitchen was well-stocked and very functional. The living area was large and comfortable for 3 adults and 2 teens. We never felt on top of each other. The washer and dryer were great to have but, as widely reported, the dryer doesn’t really dry. This would be the only negative because you need to run it 3 cycles and it often just stops mid-cycle, like it is saying “well maybe that is good enough” when it is definitely still very wet. Knowing this in advance, it wasn’t a big deal. KBM property management: We rented our unit through KBM resort rentals so we knew exactly which unit we would have. It was our first time with them and a very smooth experience from start to finish. The communication was easy, both by phone and by email. They called on the day of arrival and easily made the change in our arrival time due to our delayed flight. They responded quickly and professionally to a request mid-stay. They stocked the condo with 3 Tommy Bahama beach chairs, a beach umbrella, 4 boogie boards, a pack and play pen, a high chair, and plastic plates, cups and utensils for toddler, which also happened to work well for a sight-impaired member of our group. There was enough dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent, garbage bags, dish soap, coffee filters and paper towels for a week. There was a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts on arrival. Everything in the unit was in great condition. We never met anyone in person. The bell staff or security provide the keys and parking pass. But they have an office in the plaza across the street and I felt all our needs were met. They volunteered the option of having the king bed in the second bedroom split into 2 twins if we preferred that option. They list maintenance or construction that might impact the stay on the website. There was painting on a different part of the building during our stay and it had absolutely no impact on us. We knew this was a condo resort and we didn’t miss the services of a hotel like maid service, front desk, business centre, concierge. Dukes provides poolside service and the pool area was well maintained and the landscaping beautiful. I would definitely return to this resort.…
