Detailed Reviews
My family of 6 stayed at this cabin for one night so we could explore the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Check in was easy at the hardware store and the location was great. There was plenty of space for everyone in the cabin, with even more beds than advertised on Expedia. The listing said 2 queens, 2 twins, and a pullout. Actually, there was a queen in a bedroom downstairs and a full in the other room. The upstairs loft had 3 full beds and the couch was a fold-down futon. We loved being in the lush rainforest and it felt secluded, even though there was another unit next door. The house was very clean and we didn’t mind the smells. It was actually very nostalgic of staying in cabins as a child. The fresh fruit and baked breads left on the table for us were a very sweet surprise. We felt the kitchen could have used a few more things to make it easier to cook meals. There were only 5 forks and 5 dinner knives, so they need more silverware. Luckily we had a plastic fork with us. There was not a mixing bowl and we had to make a salad in a frying pan. We also would have liked a baking sheet for the oven. There were not any pots or pans that were oven safe.
Will definitely recommend to others who want to stay in Volcano!

Seemingly good rental house for the area. The house was clean, reasonably furnished for our stay but vary much a cabin-like stay. Plenty of beds but only a single bathroom. Getting the keys to unit was a bit confusing but otherwise the folks that managed were friendly and helpful.

From start to finish, Maurice was available by phone for a smooth and seamless check-in and checkout process. The room was tucked away on a quiet and secluded street just minutes from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Whether you're looking to escape the city or hike your way through the park - this is a pristine place for you.

We had an awesome experience at the Lava Lodge. The location is nice, almost like inside a rain forest. High standard quality items in the room. The reservation process is very convenient. There is always prompt assistance available over the phone, as needed.

The place was super moldy and intolerable for sleep due to the smell. We sept horribly that night and thankfully only one night. Seems a bit overpriced for such poor sleeping conditions. It’s easy to see how mold is an issue in volcano with the moisture but there was no demudifier even trying.

Where to begin? Have you ever gone camping? Then you have experienced better accommodations than this shack.
Let me start by saying we got the cheapest and ONLY room available on the windward side of the Big Island because it was Merrie Monarch week, so we didn't have high expectations.
That being said, for 2 people the "room" was barely big enough for our suitcases and us. We had to cram in along with the dehumidifier (the loudest one on the earth I think), the dorm style fridge and the portable electric heater. There's no TV or phone, so you are completely shut off from the civilized world and there's no way to call for help. The shower was no bigger than a phone booth, but at least we had running hot water.
We spent as little time actually in the room as possible, staying out until we were tired enough to fall asleep ASAP.
Our 2 days were capped off by a visit from a Hawaiian Lava Bug. At least that's what I told my wife it was when she saw it crawling in her suitcase. She admitted after we checked out that she knew it was a good ol' American cockroach, but was too tired at that point to freak out (see above), and that is why I married her, but I digress.
The Big Island is so beautiful that we still enjoyed ourselves, but more so after we left the Lava Lodge. So unless you are as desperate as we were or a masochist stay anyplace else.

We booked 2 rooms at the Lava Lodge and instantly regretted it. Upon our late check in, we had to go to the Thai Thai restaurant (which looked good, but we didn't eat here). We had to pay for the rooms up front, which I'm always a little wary of and in hind sight, I regret agreeing to pay upfront. My wife and I stayed in 'Wolfie 2' which was clean, but it was not worth the $79. The double bed was tiny, the walls are paper thin and there is a smell of mildew in the room. The shower worked and was OK, but it was just an odd place to stay. My inlaws had an equally nasty expeience.
Great location and the breakfast in the Lava Cafe over the road was great. I think I had 2 hours sleep and when I went to complain, the owner was nowhere to be seen. When I went to the Lava Cafe, they didn't even know of the Lava Lodge! That says a lot considering there are about 10 houses in this village!!!
Do yourself a favour and spend a few dollars extra and book into the Volcano Inn, situated just inside the Volcano National Park.

This place is about as close to camping as you can come, including spiders and the mold you might find no the inside of your tent... including the wet mildew funky smell. Hardly worth it if it were free. Do yourself and favor and stay somewhere else, that's clean and bug free.

I stayed at the Lava Lodge at Hale Kilauea, Diamond House and can tell you first hand to avoid staying at this facility,
The Diamond House is a overpriced dump. The house smells like wet wood, and mildew and requires two dehumidifiers to be keep running at all times, who know what mole is growing.
The furniture hasn’t been updated since the early 60, and is need of a serious upgrade, this includes the mattress on the beds, worst night sleep I have ever experienced. Walls are paper-thin and if sharing this property you should consider this fact.
The WI-FI service is slow and single strength is poor. I was only able to receive a single when sitting on the porch and than the service keep dropping out.
I recommend avoiding staying here, there are other properties in the area of Volcano that would provide a rewarding experience instead of the disappointment I experienced staying here.
