My wife and I spent two nights in the Forest House, in November. We chose Volcano Rainforest Retreat based on Trip Advisor reviews and the proximity to Volcano National Park. The Forest house was perfect for us and lived up to the excellent reviews. Volcano Rainforest Retreat is a short drive to the restaurants in Volcano and the National Park. Kathleen and Peter were excellent hosts. I would highly recommned this B&B and I would definitely stay at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat again.

My wife and chose the Volcano Rainforest B&B as our place for our 7 night stay on Hawaii's Big Island. Back in 2011 we took a day trip from our 9 night vacation in Oahu not realizing one day was not enough time to see the entire island. So this trip was planned see the best the island has to offer. So staying as close to Volcano National Park as possible was a start. We stayed 3 nights in the Bamboo Guest House and 4 nights in the Forest House. If we had to do it again, we'd stay all 7 nights in the Bamboo Guest House, we loved it that much. Nothing against the Forest House, which was larger than most hotel rooms, but the Bamboo Guest House offered so much more space and luxury. Advice: book early we booked almost 9 months in advance and only 3 nights were available! Both accommodations were clean and comfortable. The resort offered a decent continental style breakfast that you order the day before. Coffee, tea, fruit and pastry are the primary items. If your are looking for seclusion and a true rainforest experience, this is your place. But don't expect TV, strong Wifi or cell service as this place is the real deal for quiet and decompressing time. Conveniently located near Volcano National Park, you can beat the crowds to watch the volcano activity. The town of Volcano has decent restaurant options but, grocery store and most other convenience options are 20 - 30 minutes away. Also, expect rainy and damp conditions on most days so take advantage of the room service option to have the linens dried. However, it should be noted we had beautiful days for all of our big island excursions. Last but least, I must talk about our hosts, Peter and Kathleen. They spent almost an hour with us introducing us to the B & B and area even though we checked in very late. This speaks for itself, the hosts were awesome. Our transition from one cottage to another was seamless inspite of the fact our day trips often lasted all day. With all that being said, if you want a clean and comfortable place to stay minus TV and contact to the world, this is your place!

We stayed in the Sanctuary for three nights and can't recommend this place highly enough! The owners, manager, and staff are friendly and made us feel so welcome. The property is stunning- just magical, really. It's so unique and we loved waking up to the forest every morning and falling asleep to the sounds of a rainforest every night. We loved the O'furo soaking tub too-so relaxing! The retreat is only minutes from the national park and close enough to visit Hilo for a day trip. Loved this place!

My fiancee and I had a wonderful three-day stay in Kathleen and Peter's Bamboo Guest Cottage. We loved the design of the bungalow, which allowed the natural beauty of the rainforest to shine. Kathleen and Peter have created such a unique, wonderful experience and thought through every detail. We were very comfortable, loved the private outdoor soaking tub and enjoyed the all the delicious breakfast options. Kathleen gave us a wonderful history of the lava flows in the area and excellent recommendations of things to do on our drive back to Kona on our last day. We highly recommend Volcano Rainforest Retreat and can't wait for our next visit.

The Good: An excellent overall experience. My wife has bookmarked this B&B after we visited Oahu in 2011, and 10 years later we made it to the Big Island, and booked 4 nights here. Peter met us as we pulled in, and we had a great stay. He gave a very thorough walk through of the cabin, the grounds, amenities in the town of Volcano, and tips on visiting Volcano National Park. The cottage was very nicely done. The climate is in the 70's in the day time, and the most of the windows open to allow a great flow of air. In the evening it gets cooler, and the gas fireplace created a great cozy atmosphere. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The cottages are well hidden from each other, and we had the sense of being alone in the rainforest. The breakfast is "continental" but is actually a full selection when you arrive, and then you leave a checklist for whatever items you would like more of each day. The options were all good. The local macadamia granola offered is outstanding and fruit was fresh, and local Kona coffee is part of the options. The OK: They offer wifi, but it was inconsistent in working. Not major issue, but we ended up using cellular data about half the time. The Odd: We came back mid-morning from an early trip into the park, and our cottage was being shown to non-employees while we were still staying there. Not a big deal, but it was not something we expected. We highly recommend staying here if are in the area. Peter and Kathleen are excellent hosts, the grounds are beautiful and well maintained, and it is about as close as you can get to the park without being inside.
