My husband and I went to the Big Island of Hawaii for our honeymoon. We chose Kona to stay in because the weather is always sunnier than Hilo, and from what we researched, it was filled with activities to do.
We stayed at the South Kona Hideaway for 7 wonderful nights in the Lanai. The room is tastefully decorated with Hawaiian artwork, artifacts and furnishings. The Lanai has two bedrooms; the master's has a king sized bed, it was very comfortable, and the linens were soft as silk. For those who have kids or just appreciate the extra space, there's also a second bedroom with two twin beds and a giant closet. Every room in the Lanai is very sunny, as there are many windows.
The Lanai also has a kitchen, with a range oven, freezer, refrigerator, microwave, all utensils and table ware. The Lanai has one bathroom with shower, however there is an outdoor shower, with hot water on demand for your own private use. Also for private use is a gas-grill and a hot tub that we frequently used.
The whole suite supplies you with just about everything you need. There 's free WI-FI, many helpful books, clothes hanger for hanging your swim wears, on demand locally produced 100% Kona coffee, homemade granola, yogurt in the refrigerator, all different kinds of spices and cooking oil in the cupboard, cooler, in the bathroom Lou and Erik supplies you with toiletries items, and a first aid kit. There are also four large towels and beach chairs and mats for your use. The master bedroom has an i-Pod dock, which was helpful to wake us up after a night of jet lag.
The room was very enjoyable, with a practical feeling of a home. Breakfast was delivered to us every morning, it was served in a traditional box with tei leaves. My husband commented on how he's never ate so healthy. We were provided with fresh, in season organic fruit that tasted like it was picked fresh from the tree itself, two organic hard-boiled eggs, and delicious baked pastries.
The innkeepers could be more raved than the room itself! Lou and Erik were very kind and responsive. He provided us with extended knowledge of the Island, as if he has been a resident there his whole life. We were planning on taking a guided snorkel trip with Fairwinds, that would have debited us $100 per person. However, after talking to Erik, he informed us of a popular local snorkel beach, and of a local rental business (the Kona Boys) where we rented two sets of snorkel gear for only $7/person. With Erik's advice, we headed out to the beach, and had a memorable time, we saw many different types and colored fishes that day.
We didn't really have a plan for our 7 days in Hawaii, so almost everyday we would ask Lou what to do, where to go and where to dine, which he was graciously willing to do. And every time we followed Lou's recommendations, we were 100% pleased. It didn't seem like everything Lou and Erik would suggest came from a brochure, it felt as if they were genuine recommendations that they've had a good experience with or hidden treasures that locals did not want tourists to know about. Overall the stay was extremely enjoyable, the Lanai was very spacious and clean and we were provided with everything we could possibly need. Lou and Erik were terrific to us, we didn't feel like lost souls as if would have if we stayed at a resort, and we enjoyed the company of their dog Beauford, as our own pup was left at home :O)
The South Kona Hideaway is also close to many landmarks, such as 'Two-Step' - popular, local snorkle beach near the Place of Refuge, Painted Church, Coffee Belt, 25 miles to Ali'i Drive, 36 miles to Volcano's National Park, and 60 miles to Hilo.
Make sure to check South Kona Hideaway's website for package deals for your stay. We got 2 nights free for staying 5 days!

We stayed at the South Kona Hideaway in July and had a fantastic time. We were greeted every morning with a mouth-watering breakfast filled with tropical fruit, freshly baked bread, eggs, and Kona coffee. We loved the lush scenery and jaw-dropping sunsets from our deck as well. And it was only minutes away from some of the best snorkeling on the Kona coast at the Place of Refuge and Captain Cook Monument. We were also given tons of recommendations of good places to eat in the area, so we avoided many of the Kona tourist traps. Overall, a great place to stay if you want access to everything that the Kona Coast has to offer, but seclusion and relaxation in a low key setting. Would definitely come back again!

We stayed for 4 nights this summer and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially the breakfasts! Every morning it was exciting to see what was in our breakfast basket. It was always fresh, exotic fruit, with hard boiled eggs and a baked item. The scones were particularly yummy. The Lookout was like a tree house, with wonderful views of the water.
It was conveniently located to beaches and snorkeling and our hosts were very helpful.

When I saw the photos of this bed & breakfast on their web site, it certainly appealed to me as something out of the ordinary. I'm not a big fan (in fact, not a fan at all) of the stereotypical b&b that's filled with fussy antiques and jars of potpourri. And the communal meals are definitely not appealing to me. I want more privacy and this place looked like it could be a good fit for me.
After arriving at the hot, dry, lava flow terrain of the Kona airport, it was a pleasure to drive south and enter what can best be described as a jungle atmosphere. The higher elevation offers more comfortable temperatures and the additional rainfall ensures that the view in every direction is lush and unbelievably green. The wild philodendrons, heliconias, bananas, palms, orchids and countless other plants and flowers just add to the tropical and exotic atmosphere.
This b&b is tucked into this sort of landscape on a gentle hillside slope with wide-open views to the ocean. I stayed in "The Lookout" which truly does personify its name. All aspects of the rooms, furnishings and amenities were new, immaculate and comfortable, down to the fabulously scented, handmade soap. It was such a pleasure to lie in bed or sit on the balcony reading with spectacular views and the sounds of wild birds in the jungle forest.
Wonderful breakfasts were delivered in baskets each morning to my door at pre-determined times so I could eat in privacy at my leisure... ideal! And, having my own tea kettle, fridge and microwave allowed me to have a few meals in when I didn't feel like another visit to a restaurant (although there are several excellent ones nearby... the Manago Hotel is an old landmark that has THE BEST pork chops I think I've ever had).
Just walking around the neighborhood is a treat as the plumerias, bread fruits, mangos and macadamias offer views not available on the mainland. There are lots of local attractions listed in any guidebook, and even downtown Kona is a short 15 minute drive. There is amazing snorkeling just a few miles down the hill, and one day I drove to Hilo and then back via the volcano without feeling rushed or pressured at all.
This place is definitely a repeat and I know when I do return it will feel like "going home."

Tina welcomed us in this beautiful place among a beautiful garden of fruit trees.
The two rooms are really spacious. In the kitchen you can find anything you need and Tina provided us fresh fruit and homemade muffins for breakfast.
The apartment was extremely clean. The terrace is looking at the garden and at a beautiful sunset on the sea.
We didn't need it but also equipment for the beach and for snorkeling was provided.
Everything was just perfect and I felt so peaceful like being at home.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in early October. Tina and Keri were very welcoming. We were in the lower suite which is very funky and spread out. The bed was the very best we have had at any hotel, condo or B & B. Tina served up her fabulous large muffins and fruit right from their garden. They also left us coffee which was great. This is conveniently located - close enough to restaurants and attractions but far enough not to be affected by crowds and noise. Tina gave great suggestions for snorkelling near "The Place of Refuge" and was extremely helpful with a minor glitch that arose within the unit. Tina and Keri are very friendly and helpful. Parking was fine although can be tricky when having to back out onto the main street.

We stayed for a week at the South Kona Hideaway. It was a dream! Quiet in the mornings/evenings, beautiful views. The rental was very spacious for the two of us, with a nice balcony and comfortable bed.
The managers were extremely friendly, and we got fresh fruit and homemade baked goods every day. Anything we needed, they were always there to help. We were also able to do our laundry and had ample room to clean and hang all our scuba gear.
We will absolutely stay here again when we come back to Big Island!

First of all, the location, property and hosts, Tina & Keri, reflect "the true spirit of Aloha" on the Big Island. Away from all the touristy hustle & bustle of Kailua-Kona, but super conveniently just off Rte 11(Belt Road) which will take you anywhere you want to go! It only took me 1.5 hours to drive to either Hawi, up north or to Volcano National Park, down south from their location. Only 10-15 minutes away from Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Park (Place of Refuge) and 2-step for you snorkel fans...lots of pretty fish and honu (sea turtles), even spinner dolphins! Kealakekua Bay State Historical Underwater Park is only 15-20 minutes away! The hosts even supply you with snorkel gear during your stay! Plenty of great local eateries and Kona coffee farms. Annie's has the best burgers on the Big Island IMHO, get their decadent chocolate pudding for dessert...
Breakfasts consist of fabulous Kona coffee or tea supplied in your kitchenette and fresh Hawaiian fruits grown on site in abundance! Tina LOVES to bake! Her awesome monster muffins that have mango, macademia nut, coconut and chocolate. These muffins are loaded and give you lots of energy to start your day. Just let her know if you have any diet restrictions and she will happily accommodate! They have Sleep Number beds (which I am now sadly addicted to, lol!), cleaner units than any 5 star hotel and GORGEOUS SUNSETS! Units are supplied with complete kitchenette, attractive furnishings and more....I could not have felt any more at home during my month stay there...I miss my breakfasts on the balcony...Much Mahalo Tina & Keri! See you next June!

SKH is the perfect establishment. The two apartment units are immaculate in
appropriately lush surroundings. Staying in the South Kona district is preferable
to the North district with its resorts, condos and shopping centers. The South is
authentic and transporting; it's where the locals live. Shops and cafes are family
operated except for one McDonalds. Highly, highly recommended.

South Kona Hideaway is located in a smaller side street so that place is very quiet and peaceful. They have only 2 rooms total so you will definitely have privacy while you stay there. We stayed in a lookout room (smaller room of the 2) and the view is amazing. The host, Lou, was also very nice. He left us alone but always there if we need him. We love coffee and we love that they have Kona coffee and coffee machine in the room.
We will definitely go back if we decide to go back to South Kona.

There is no easy access to the monument itself as it is a hike down the hill, and back up again. However you can easily enter the other side of the bay at Manini beach. The other easy access, to a different bay, is at The Place of Refuge aka 2 step.
